The local volume averages of the equations of motion as well as the appropriate boundary conditions for neutrally buoyant suspensions of spheres in second-order fluids (Li and Slattery, 1989a) are employed to analyze both the cone-plate viscometer and the parallel-plate viscometer. The predicted results are compared with measurements of apparent viscosity and of the primary normal stress difference. Predictions of measured apparent viscosities are in excellent agreement with the experimental data up to 20% solids by volume; the average error is no more than 5%. Predictions of apparent viscosities for the limiting case of a very dilute suspension are restricted to less than 10% solids by volume. The primary normal stress difference is predicted to be independent of the volume fraction of solids, in approximate agreement with previously reported data.

Both theory and experiment have demonstrated that a neutrally buoyant suspension of uniform spheres in an incompressible second-order fluid behaves like a single-phase second-order fluid in these two viscometers.  相似文献

This paper presents the foundations for building mobile environmental information systems (MEISs) requiring an interdisciplinary approach. MEISs require expertise from the disciplines of environmental biology, geography, and mobile technology. MEISs show great promise for the acquisition of environmental information using different mobile devices. Automatic mobile acquisition enables the forwarding of the information to central databases for storage, further processing, and transmission to the mobile devices in a form that is useful to the users. Furthermore, these systems have the potential to be used both in the protection of nature, as well as in recreational use in a way that takes the constraints of nature into account. In this paper we describe the preliminary results of the MINNE project and the prototypes currently under research in the project.  相似文献

Forage grasses and legumes growing in the soil covering four coal fly ash landfill sites in Central New York were sampled and analyzed for 20 elements. Selenium, boron and molybdenum were most consistently higher in concentration in these crops than the corresponding control plants sampled from adjacent upwind locations. Legumes absorbed greater amounts of these elements than grasses probably owing to their deep-rooted penetration of the fly ash layer below. Factors affecting the extent of absorption of these elements by the crops and the agricultural significance as related to grazing farm animals are discussed.  相似文献

TO ELUCIDATE THE ROLE OF EMOTIONAL FACTORS IN PHENYLKETONURIA (PKU), 4 S GROUPS COMPRISED OF PKU, RETARDED AND/OR BRAIN DAMAGED, PSYCHOTIC, AND NORMAL CHILDREN WERE COMPARED ON A MEASURE OF INTERACTION BEHAVIOR. ON TOTAL INTERACTION SCORES, THE PKU GROUP WAS FOUND TO PERFORM SIGNIFICANTLY MORE POORLY THAN THE NORMALS, BUT SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER THAN THE PSYCHOTICS. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE PKU GROUP AND RETARDED AND/OR BRAIN-DAMAGED GROUP TENDED TOWARD SIGNIFICANCE, ALTHOUGH ON SEPARATE COMPARISONS FOR THE 3 SOCIAL STIMULUS CONDITIONS THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THESE 2 GROUPS WERE NOT SIGNIFICANT. THE PKU GROUP WAS FOUND TO BE THE MOST HETEROGENEOUS, AND THE CLUSTERING OF SCORES SUGGESTED THAT PHENYLKETONURIA IS BEHAVIORALLY NOT A UNITARY DISORDER. The extensive nonstoichiometry in the 〈U1– z Gd z O2± x 〉 † phase was investigated experimentally and the data are represented by a chemical thermodynamic method. The experimental ranges of temperature, oxygen potential, and z were 1273 to 1773 K, 0 to −600 kJ/mol, and 0.1 to 0.8, respectively. For hypostoichiometry, ideal-solution thermodynamics for the equilibrium 3Gd4/3O2+ 4UO2+ (O2) = 6U2/3Gd2/3O8/3 were used to represent the experimental data, while for hyperstoichiometry a nonideal solution was used for the equilibrium 4UO2+ (O2) = 2U2O5. The wide ranges in x and z led to an improvement of the previous analysis of literature data and led to partial molal Gibbs free energy values that are useful for any thermodynamic calculation involving the phase.  相似文献

Chicken thigh meat (CTM), (0–40%) was mixed with instant mashed potato and twin-screw extruded. Feed moisture content (FMC), (15 or 20%) and screw speed (SS) (250 or 300 rpm) were varied. CTM affected expansion, bulk density, mean cell size, plateau stress, fracturability and solubility. Protein, fat, free fatty acid and ash increased and carbohydrate decreased as CTM increased. Extrudates produced at low feed moisture (15%) had higher compressive resistance, fracturability and solubility. Extrudates produced at high feed moisture (20%) had higher bulk density and mean cell size. Screw speed had no influence except on expansion degree (p≥0.05). Increased CTM changed microstructure from rough, thread-like sheets to a flat, agglomerated carbohydrate-protein laminar phase. Panelists reported no differences in overall acceptability among 0% CTM extruded at 20% FMC, 20% CTM extruded at 15% FMC and 20% CTM extruded at 20% FMC.  相似文献
