Bialgebras for structural operational semantics: An introduction

Bialgebras and distributive laws are an abstract, categorical framework to study various flavors of structural operational semantics. This paper aims to introduce the reader to the basics of bialgebras for operational semantics, and to sketch the state of the art in this research area.     

Differential patterns of cell cycle regulatory proteins expression in transgenic models of thyroid tumours

Cell cycle proteins regulate the transitions from G1 to S and G2 to M phases. In higher eukaryotes, their function is controlled by intracellular cascades regulated by extracellular growth factors. We have studied in previously described transgenic mouse models for thyroid proliferative diseases the expression of the key proteins regulating the cell cycle by Western blotting and immunohistochemistry, and have correlated the observations with the known actions of the transgenes on the signal transduction cascades. In the adenosine A2a receptor model, the cyclic AMP pathway, upstream of the Rb family cell division block, is constitutively activated. In the model expressing HPV 16 E7 protein, the Rb-like proteins are inhibited. Cyclin-dependent kinases cdk4, cdk2 and cdc2, and the associated cyclins D, E and A have been studied. Cyclin D3 appears as the major cyclin D subtype expressed in mouse thyroid epithelial cells in normal and transgenic mice. In the adenosine A2aR model, all cell cycle proteins tested were accumulated. In the E7 model, all cell cycle proteins except for D-type cyclins and cdk4 were also accumulated. A similar pattern was observed in thyroids coexpressing both transgenes, suggesting a dominant effect of E7 over the consequences of the cAMP cascade activation. The cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors p21cip1/waf1 and p27kip1 were not downregulated in these proliferating thyroids which suggest other roles than the inhibition of the cell cycle progression.     

Reachability of a Set of Facets for Linear Affine Systems With n-1 Inputs

This note provides new necessary and sufficient conditions for an n-dimensional linear affine system with n-1 inputs to reach an exit facet (or set of exit facets) of a simplex. The conditions reduce the original NP-hard necessary and sufficient conditions to a set of at most n LP problems     

Positive real control of two-dimensional systems: Roesser models and linear repetitive processes

This paper considers the problem of positive real control for two-dimensional (2-D) discrete systems described by the Roesser model and also discrete linear repetitive processes, which are another distinct sub-class of 2-D linear systems of both systems theoretic and applications interest. The purpose of this paper is to design a dynamic output feedback controller such that the resulting closed-loop system is asymptotically stable and the closed-loop system transfer function from the disturbance to the controlled output is extended strictly positive real. We first establish a version of positive realness for 2-D discrete systems described by the Roesser state space model, then a sufficient condition for the existence of the desired output feedback controllers is obtained in terms of four LMIs. When these LMIs are feasible, an explicit parameterization of the desired output feedback controllers is given. We then apply a similar approach to discrete linear repetitive processes represented in their equivalent 1-D state-space form. Finally, we provide numerical examples to demonstrate the applicability of the approach.     

Bulk micromachined electrostatic RMS-to-DC converter

Bulk micromachining in silicon and glass wafers and subsequent silicon-to-glass anodic bonding have been used for the realization of an electrostatic RMS-to-DC converter. A suspended membrane has been designed for: large dynamic operating range (detection limit by minimum mechanical-thermal noise and high value of the pull-in voltage), maximum bandwidth (low series resistance, high second harmonic suppression using squeeze film damping and suspension beam design), long-term stability, and a sufficient displacement-to-voltage sensitivity (membrane area and suspension arm length). Prototypes are typically composed of a 3 × 3 mm² perforated membrane area suspended by four beams of 200 μm length, 500 μm width, and 4 μm thickness micromachined out of silicon and aligned to a counter electrode on glass with 4-μm spacing in between. Measurements on realized devices show a 4.5 pF nominal capacitance. Static measurements indicate a sensitivity of 5 fF/V² and a voltage shift of 0.2 V. The nominal square relation is achieved within a 0.5% nonconformity error     

Predicted anti-oestrogen resistance in BRCA-associated familial breast cancers

There is controversy concerning the prognosis of breast cancers arising in women carrying loss of function mutations in the breast cancer susceptibility genes BRCA1 and BRCA2. This study was carried out to assess the likely hormone dependence of this group of tumours in comparison with an age and grade matched group of control sporadic tumours. We used quantitative immunohistochemical analysis for the oestrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PgR), cyclin D1 and pS2 on sections of primary tumours and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Expression of PgR (P < 0.05) and cyclin D1 (P < 0.01) was low in the BRCA1- and BRCA2-associated cancers compared with sporadic cases. The low frequency of expression of ER (9/40), PgR (2/40) cyclin D1 (5/36) and pS2 (5/36) in the familial tumours indicates that the majority of such tumours will be oestrogen insensitive and unlikely to respond to hormonal manipulation even at the in situ stage in their evolution. The low level of PgR (2/40 cases) suggests that there may be some abnormality of transactivating function of the ER in these tumours.     

Foreign-body appendicitis

The authors report the case of a 9-year-old boy who had a needle in his appendix. The contrast between absence of clinical symptoms and clear inflammatory changes of the appendix is noted. The authors recommend appendectomy for patients with pointed foreign bodies in the appendix to avoid inflammation and perforation.     

A single-chip CMOS optical microspectrometer with light-to-frequency converter and bus interface

A single-chip CMOS optical microspectrometer containing an array of 16 addressable Fabry-Perot etalons (each one with a different resonance cavity length), photodetectors, and circuits for readout, multiplexing, and driving a serial bus interface has been fabricated in a standard 1.6 /spl mu/m CMOS technology (chip area 3.9 /spl times/ 4.2 mm/sup 2/). The result is a chip that can operate using only four external connections (including V/sub dd/ and V/sub ss/) covering the optical range of 380-500 nm with full-width half-maximum (FWHM) = 18 nm. Frequency output and serial bus interface allow easy multisensor and multichip interfacing using a microcontroller or a personal computer. Power consumption is 1250 /spl mu/W for a clock frequency of 1 MHz.     

Theoretical and experimental evidence of different wettability classes

In this paper we analyze data from thirteen North Sea sandstone reservoirs that fall into the large group of intermediate wettability. By dividing this group into three sub-classes, fractionally-wet (FW), mixed-wet large (MWL) and mixed-wet small (MWS), we find an improved understanding of the intermediate-wet state. In the fractionally-wet state oil- and water-wet sites are random with respect to size, while in the mixed-wet state water- and oil-wet pores are sorted by size. We assume two classes of mixed wettability; MWL where the large pores are oil-wet and MWS where the small pores are oil-wet. The paper includes both theoretical considerations, pore–scale observations by ESEM, SEM and thin sections, as well as core scale wettability indices that indicate that these wettability states may exist in reservoirs.
