Nutritional requirements and economics of lowering feed costs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Feed costs are, and will continue to be, the largest single expense for milk production. Gross efficiency of milk production is greater for high-producing cows because a lower proportion of total feed intake is used for maintenance of the cow. High milk production and high feed intake are positively correlated. The challenge for the future is to continue the remarkable progress in milk yield potential and increased feed efficiency realized in the recent past. Some areas of research that show promise for improving our knowledge and ability to feed cows for even greater efficiency include studies of energy metabolism, protein metabolism, voluntary feed intake, ruminal fermentation and fiber requirements, effects of growth hormone on milk production and animal metabolism, mineral nutrition, buffers, and vitamins. Practical studies on treatment and utilization of by-product feeds, manipulation of milk composition through nutrition, and continued development of better computer models for feeding and management decisions will have a significant effect on the efficiency and profitability of the dairy enterprise.  相似文献

Power systems for military aircraft must tolerate extreme conditions: temperatures as low as -40/spl deg/C or as high as 70/spl deg/C, as well as short-term fluctuations from -55/spl deg/C to 180/spl deg/C; relative humidity as high as 100%; impacts reaching 60G. Difficult conditions can be tackled by using suitable materials and enclosure designs, but a system or unit's weight, size and shape are often governed by its location. These challenges are just the beginning. System reliability and availability are paramount as failures must be minimised at all times. To provide a reliable and safe power system for today's military aviators, many design teams are needed to tackle the architectural, electrical, mechanical and chemical parameters of power units. Exploiting emerging technical innovations, such as high-performance FETs, can only make life easier for designers of the future.  相似文献

High-repetition fast-scan cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were used to quantify and characterize the kinetics of dopamine and dopamine-o-quinone adsorption and desorption at carbon-fiber microelectrodes. A flow injection analysis system was used for the precise introduction and removal of a bolus of electroactive substance on a sub-second time scale to the disk-shaped surface of a microelectrode that was fabricated from a single carbon fiber (Thornel type T650 or P55). Pretreatment of the electrode surfaces consisted of soaking them in purified isopropyl alcohol for a minimum of 10 min, which resulted in S/N increasing by 200-400% for dopamine above that for those that were soaked in reagent grade solvent. Because of adsorption, high scan rates (2,000 V/s) are shown to exhibit equivalent S/N ratios as compared to slower, more traditional scan rates. In addition, the steady-state response to a concentration bolus is shown to occur more rapidly when cyclic voltammetric scans are repeated at short intervals (4 ms). The new methodologies allow for more accurate determinations of the kinetics of neurotransmitter release events (10-500 ms) in biological systems. Brain slice and in vivo experiments using T650 cylinder microelectrodes show that voltammetrically measured uptake kinetics in the caudate are faster using 2,000 V/s and 240 Hz measurements, as compared to 300 V/s and 10 Hz.  相似文献

Three trials were to evaluate effects of sodium bicarbonate in alfalfa hay-based diets. In Experiment 1, four Jersey cows were fed diets of 40:60 chopped alfalfa hay:grain with either 0, .25, .5, and .75% sodium bicarbonate in a 4 X 4 Latin square digestion trial. Dry matter and fiber digestion were unaffected. Volatile fatty acids of ruminal fluid and milk fatty acids were not different. In Experiment 2, two rumen fistulated cattle were fed diets of Experiment 1 for changes of ruminal fluid characteristics at -1, 2, 4, and 8 h postfeeding. Volatile fatty acids of ruminal fluid and hydrogen ion concentration were not different across time with sodium bicarbonate. In Experiment 3, four Holstein cows with rumen cannulae were fed diets of 30:70 chopped alfalfa hay:grain with 0, .4, .8, and 1.2% sodium bicarbonate in a 4 X 4 Latin square. Dry matter and fiber digestion were unaffected. Ruminal fluid samples were collected at -1, 3, 6, and 9 h postfeeding. Volatile fatty acids were different only at 6 h with 0 and 1.2% sodium bicarbonate diets displaying lower concentrations. Rate of increase of hydrogen ion concentration was greater for diets containing 0 and .4% compared with .8 and 1.2% sodium bicarbonate between -1 and 6 h. Milk fatty acid composition, ruminal liquid dilution rate, and dry matter disappearance from nylon bags suspended in the rumen were not affected by sodium bicarbonate.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to compare the fixation of the semitubular blade plate with that of the AO T plate. Cadaveric humeri (n=12 pairs) from an elderly population (41 to 89 years) had either a blade plate (n=12) or a T plate (n=12) fixed to them, subsequent to which a transverse osteotomy was performed. Mechanical testing in tension was performed in 1 series (n=5, blade plate; n=5, T plate) by applying a single maximal load to failure and in a second series (n=7, blade plate; n=7, T plate) by applying submaximal cyclic loading before failure was induced. Results showed that the fixation provided by the semitubular blade plate was significantly better (P < .05) than that of the T plate in those specimens subjected to submaximal cyclic loading before failure (series 2). This latter testing method contains some component of the clinical situation compared with monotonic distraction to failure. Based on these results plus favorable clinical results reported in the literature, the semitubular blade plate is possibly a better alternative to the T plate in the management of proximal humeral fractures that require open reduction and internal fixation.  相似文献

Synthetic molecular motors can be fuelled by the hydrolysis or hybridization of DNA. Such motors can move autonomously and programmably, and long-range transport has been observed on linear tracks. It has also been shown that DNA systems can compute. Here, we report a synthetic DNA-based system that integrates long-range transport and information processing. We show that the path of a motor through a network of tracks containing four possible routes can be programmed using instructions that are added externally or carried by the motor itself. When external control is used we find that 87% of the motors follow the correct path, and when internal control is used 71% of the motors follow the correct path. Programmable motion will allow the development of computing networks, molecular systems that can sort and process cargoes according to instructions that they carry, and assembly lines that can be reconfigured dynamically in response to changing demands.  相似文献

Feeding trials were conducted in two commercial dairy herds to evaluate the addition of .8% sodium bicarbonate to alfalfa hay-based diets. Approximately half of each herd served as controls and the other half was fed the same diet with sodium bicarbonate. A total of 1280 Dairy Herd Improvement Association lactation records were obtained in the two herds during the trials. Cows in herd 1 were milked three times daily and cows in herd 2 were milked twice daily. In herd 1, milk production from control and bicarbonate groups was: first lactation cows, 7491 and 7748 kg/cow; second lactation cows, 8363 and 8791 kg/cow; and third and higher lactation cows, 8713 and 9562 kg/cow. There were no differences in milkfat or solids-not-fat percentages between treatment groups. In herd 2, milk production from control and bicarbonate groups was: first lactation cows, 6800 and 7158 kg/cow; second lactation cows, 8487 and 8082 kg/cow; and third and higher lactation cows, 8807 and 8216 kg/cow. First lactation cows fed sodium bicarbonate had a lower milk fat percentage than controls. There were no other differences in milk fat or solids-not-fat percentages between treatment groups.  相似文献
