Traditionally, direct marketing companies have relied on pre-testing to select the best offers to send to their audience. Companies systematically dispatch the offers under consideration to a limited sample of potential buyers, rank them with respect to their performance and, based on this ranking, decide which offers to send to the wider population. Though this pre-testing process is simple and widely used, recently the industry has been under increased pressure to further optimize learning, in particular when facing severe time and learning space constraints. The main contribution of the present work is to demonstrate that direct marketing firms can exploit the information on visual content to optimize the learning phase. This paper proposes a two-phase learning strategy based on a cascade of regression methods that takes advantage of the visual and text features to improve and accelerate the learning process. Experiments in the domain of a commercial Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) show the effectiveness of the proposed methods and a significant improvement over traditional learning techniques. The proposed approach can be used in any multimedia direct marketing domain in which offers comprise both a visual and text component.

A holographic technique for forming 45/spl deg/ tilted fibre gratings using two 45/spl deg/-90/spl deg/, -45/spl deg/ fused silica prisms is described. The technique reduces fringe distortion due to the lens effects of the fibre during exposure. Details of the experimental system and grating performance are given.  相似文献

The efficiency of lossless compression algorithms for fixed-palette images (indexed images) may change if a different indexing scheme is adopted. Many lossless compression algorithms adopt a differential-predictive approach. Hence, if the spatial distribution of the indexes over the image is smooth, greater compression ratios may be obtained. Because of this, finding an indexing scheme that realizes such a smooth distribution is a relevant issue. Obtaining an optimal re-indexing scheme is suspected to be a hard problem and only approximate solutions have been provided in literature. In this paper, we restate the re-indexing problem as a graph optimization problem: an optimal re-indexing corresponds to the heaviest Hamiltonian path in a weighted graph. It follows that any algorithm which finds a good approximate solution to this graph-theoretical problem also provides a good re-indexing. We propose a simple and easy-to-implement approximation algorithm to find such a path. The proposed technique compares favorably with most of the algorithms proposed in literature, both in terms of computational complexity and of compression ratio.  相似文献

In an attempt to minimize the acetaldehyde formation at the processing temperatures (280–300°C) and the outer–inner transesterification reactions in the poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET)–poly(ethylene naphthalate) (PEN) melt‐mixed blends, the hydroxyl chain ends of PET were capped using benzoyl chloride. The thermal characterization of the melt‐mixed PET–PEN blends at 300°C, as well as that of the corresponding homopolymers, was performed. Degradations were carried out under dynamic heating and isothermal conditions in both flowing nitrogen and static air atmosphere. The initial decomposition temperatures (Ti) were determined to draw useful information about the overall thermal stability of the studied compounds. Also, the glass transition temperature (Tg) was determined by finding data, indicating that the end‐capped copolymers showed a higher degradation stability compared to the unmodified PET and, when blended with PEN, seemed to be efficient in slowing the kinetic of transesterification leading to, for a finite time, the formation of block copolymers, as determined by 1H‐NMR analysis. This is strong and direct evidence that the end‐capping of the ? OH chain ends influences the mechanism and the kinetic of transesterification. POLYM. ENG.
