Ligand-induced endocytosis of the asialoglycoprotein receptor: evidence for heterogeneity in subunit oligomerization

Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in older men and the major cause of death from prostate cancer is metastatic disease. The matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play a significant role in the growth, invasion and metastasis of many tumors, including those of the prostate. We previously demonstrated that doxycycline, a synthetic tetracycline, inhibits MMPs and cell proliferation and induces apoptosis in several cancer cell lines. We also demonstrated that in an in vivo model of metastatic breast cancer in athymic mice doxycycline inhibits tumor size and regrowth after resection. In the present study, gelatinolytic activity in the human prostate cancer cell line, LNCaP, was suppressed and significant inhibition of cell growth occurred after exposure to 5 or 10 microg/ml of doxycycline, while cell growth was normal in untreated cells. Radioisotope incorporation into proteins was reduced by doxycycline. DNA fragmentation, consistent with apoptosis, was demonstrated in cells treated with doxycycline. These data suggest that doxycycline may have potential utility in the management of prostate cancer.     

The addition of a glucocorticoid to the protocol of programmed oocyte retrieval for in-vitro fertilization--a randomized study

A group of 78 infertile women, diagnosed as having tubal factor infertility only, was enrolled in a prospective, randomized study conducted to determine whether the addition of different doses of glucocorticoids to the protocol of ovulation induction for in-vitro fertilization (IVF) would be beneficial. Oocyte numbers, percentage of fertilization, oestradiol, luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone serum concentrations, number of embryo transfers and pregnancy rate were evaluated. Compared to control cycles (group A; n = 24), the addition of 0.5 mg (group B; n = 27) of 1 mg dexamethasone (group C; n = 27), combined with the protocol of programmed oocyte retrieval for IVF patients in the study, demonstrated equivalent results. The mean numbers of oocytes retrieved were 10.8 +/- 3.9 in the control group, compared to 11.2 +/- 4.0 in group B and 10.5 +/- 3.6 in group C. The fertilization rates were 69 +/- 21, 66 +/- 18 and 70 +/- 15% respectively. The pregnancy rates were 20, 16 and 20.8% respectively. The addition of up to 1 mg dexamethasone daily to the protocol of ovulation induction for oocyte retrieval did not improve the overall IVF-embryo transfer outcome in patients with tubal factor infertility.     

Gonadotropins and glucocorticoid therapy for "low responders"--a controlled study

Traditional views of pure alexia have held that the disorder results from a disconnection between the secondary visual cortices of both hemispheres and the angular gyrus of the dominant hemisphere. Evidence has accumulated, however, suggesting the importance of the posterior inferior temporal area in visual language processing. We describe clinical-pathological support for the presence of a lateralized visual language association area residing in the dominant posterior inferior temporal lobe.     

Sperm motility is a major determinant of pregnancy outcome following intrauterine insemination

The presence and the distribution of neuroendocrine cells in the gastrointestinal tract of adult wild boar were investigated. The endocrine cells have been identified by means of immunocytochemical techniques using antibodies against serotonin, gastrin, somatostatin, cholecystokinin (CCK), met-enkephalin (MET-ENK), gastric-inhibitory peptide (GIP) and glucagon. The number of positive cells for each antiserum in each region was evaluated. Results were compared with data present in the literature and obtained previously by us and other authors in swine and domestic mammals (Ceccarelli et al., 1985, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1995; Capella and Solcia, 1972; Domeneghini and Castaldo, 1981; Peranzi and Lehy, 1984; Krause et al., 1985).     

Fertility in anovulatory patients after primary cesarean section

We report a successful surgical treatment of an infective thoracic aortic aneurysm ruptured to the left lung. A 63-year-old man who had been suffering from fever and cough showed twice of hemoptysis. Chest CT revealed a descending thoracic aortic aneurysm ruptured to the left lung. A semiemergent operation was performed. At operation, aneurysm of descending thoracic aorta was found adherent to the left lung. Aneurysmectomy with left pneumonectomy was carried out. The postoperative course of the patient was uneventful. Conceivably, in order to avoid massive intraoperative bleeding during division of dense adhesion and postoperative graft infection, concomitant lung resection is necessary.     

Logic of Change: Semantics of Object Systems with Active Relations

In traditional approaches to object-oriented programming, objects are active, while relations between them are passive. The activeness of an object reveals itself when the object invokes a method (function) as a reaction to a message from another object (or itself). While this model is suitable for some tasks, like arranging interactions between windows, widgets and the end-user in a typical GUI environment, it's not appropriate for others. Business applications development is one of the examples. In this domain, relations between conceptual objects are at least as important as objects themselves and the more appropriate model for this field would be the one where relations are active while objects are passive. A version of such a model is presented in the paper. The model considers a system as consisting of a set of objects, a code of laws, and a set of connectors, each connector hanging on a group of objects that must obey a certain law. The formal logical semantics of this model is presented as a way of analyzing the set of all possible trajectories of all possible systems. The analysis allows to differentiate valid trajectories from invalid ones. The procedural semantics is presented as a state machine that given an initial state, generates all possible trajectories that can be derived from this state. This generator can be considered as a model of a connectors scheduler that allows various degrees of parallelism, from sequential execution to the maxim possible parallelism. In conclusion, a programming language that could be appropriate for the proposed computer environment is discussed, and the problems of applying the model to the business domain are outlined.
