Investigating preservice teachers' professional growth in self-regulated learning environments.

Educational reforms have suggested that the ability to self-regulate learning is essential for teachers' professional growth during their entire career as well as for their ability to promote these processes among students. This study observed teachers' professional growth along 3 dimensions: self-regulated learning (SRL) in pedagogical context, pedagogical knowledge, and perceptions of teaching and learning. The authors examined 194 preservice teachers' professional growth in 4 learning environments: e-learning (EL) and face-to-face (F2F) learning, either supported by SRL (EL + SRL; F2F + SRL) or unsupported by SRL (EL; F2F). SRL support was based on the IMPROVE metacognitive self-questioning method (B. Kramarski & Z. R. Mevarech, 2003). Mixed quantitative and qualitative analyses showed that preservice teachers in both supported SRL conditions outperformed their unsupported peers on all professional growth measures. Moreover, EL + SRL teachers exhibited the highest SRL ability (cognition, metacognition, motivation), pedagogical knowledge (designing a learning unit), and student-centered learning perceptions (self-construction of knowledge). Inhibition of expression of the lysine-rich 30 kDa surface antigen of Entamoeba dispar by the transcription of its antisense RNA

The gene coding for the 30 kDa lysine rich surface antigen (Ed-Ag) that is present on membrane surfaces of Entamoeba dispar trophozoites has been characterized. A specific monoclonal antibody MAb 318-28 prepared against this antigen reacts with all E. dispar strains tested, but not with any of the antigens of E. histolytica. In order to understand the function of this antigen, we constructed two plasmids, pEdA-9 and pEdA-Rev, in which the antigen-coding sequence was introduced into the pEhAct-Neo shuttle vector in the direct and opposite orientation, respectively. When E. dispar trophozoites were transfected with pEdA-9, only a slight increase was observed in the expression of the antigen. However, when E. dispar trophozoites were transfected with pEdA-Rev, the expression of the native 30 kDa antigen was significantly inhibited. This inhibition was proportional to the level of resistance of the E. dispar culture to the neomycin derivative G418. Cytopathic assays detected only a slight difference between untransfected, pEdA-9 transfected and pEdA-Rev transfected trophozoites.     

GCI—A tool for developing interactive cad user interfaces

GCI is a Unix-based tool for developing interactive CAD programs. By separating command/ menu definitions from the progam, GCI makes it easier to change and extend the user interface. The language provided by GCI is used to define the syntax of commands, menus, messages, and help text. Generally, GCI supports a static hierarchical structure of commands and menus. However, through a program interface, an application program has the freedom to change environments, commands and menus. This flexibility of run-time control of the user interface is essential for developing highly responsive interfaces in a CAD environment. This paper presents the main concepts and definition language of GCI. It then discusses architectural and implementation issues, and finally presents a typical application's view of using the tool.

Distributed deadlock detection

We describe a simple and efficient algorithm to detect deadlocks in distributed systems. In our model, processes requestN resources from a pool of sizeM. This is a generalization of the well-knownAND-OR request model. The algorithm is incrementally derived and proven correct. Microinjections of anisomycin into the intermediate cerebellum during learning affect the acquisition of classically conditioned responses in the rabbit

Galactosylhydroxylysine (GHL) is released during bone resorption and has been shown to be elevated in subjects with metabolic bone loss. GHL is relatively specific for bone, it is not recycled or significantly metabolized during collagen turnover, and the levels are not influenced by diet. Previous measurements of GHL levels in urine have been performed using reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography following pre-column derivatization. We produced polyclonal antibodies to GHL using GHL purified from sea sponges and developed an immunoassay that can recognize GHL in urine. The antibodies have minimal cross-reactivity with a physiological mixture of amino acids (< 1%), galactose (< 0.2%), lactose (< 0.3%), and glucosylgalactosylhydroxylysine (< 1%). This competitive immunoassay requires no dilution or pretreatment of the samples and provides a rapid and easy method for the evaluation of GHL in urine. Analysis of clinical samples from normal individuals, post-menopausal women, osteoporotic patients and individuals with Paget's disease show that the assay can discriminate between groups with differing levels of bone resorption as well as deoxypyridinoline (Dpd).
