This article investigates the use of streaming multimedia narratives in Web entertainment. Based on experience gained during the user-centered design of a Web site for art and culture, evidence is provided that users want and like "less clicking, more watching" Web experiences where the point of view of experts, artists, or celebrities is presented in a narrative form. A study was conducted where users evaluated 2 prototypes of cultural tours that stream continuously for several minutes unless the user chooses to exercise control over the flow or to explore hotlinks that lead to extra information. Those tours were positively evaluated as both entertaining and engaging. By analyzing mouse activity, it was determined that users who interacted more tended to report less entertainment and engagement. It was also found that such "watchable" experiences are not necessarily a solitary experience and can be enjoyed by groups of people. Finally, users see the Web experiences as a highly enriching and accessible way to augment the cultural experiences and performances they enjoy in brick-and-mortar cultural institutions around the world, rather than as a substitute for them.  相似文献

Despite an abundance of recommendations by researchers and more recently by commercial enterprises for adaptive interaction techniques and technologies, there exists little experimental validation of the value of such approaches to users. We have conducted user studies focussed on the perceived value of a variety of personalization features for an eCommerce Web site for computing machinery sales and support. Our study results have implications for the design of user-adaptive applications. Interesting findings include unenthusiastic user attitudes toward system attempts to infer user needs, goals, or interests and to thereby provide user-specific adaptive content. Users also expressed equivocal opinions of collaborative filtering for the specific eCommerce scenarios we studied; thus personalization features popular in one eCommerce environment may not be effective or useful for other eCommerce domains. Users expressed their strong desire to have full and explicit control of data and interaction. Lastly, users want readily to be able to make sense of site behavior, that is, to understand a site’s rationale for displaying particular content.  相似文献

Speech recognition is an important technology that is becoming increasingly effective for dictation-oriented activities. While recognition accuracy has increased dramatically in recent years, recent studies confirm that traditional computer users are still faster using a keyboard and mouse and spend more time correcting errors than dictating. Further, as these users become more experienced they frequently adopt multimodal strategies that require the keyboard and mouse when correcting errors. While speech recognition can be a convenient alternative for traditional computer users, it can be a powerful tool for individuals with physical disabilities that limit their ability to use a keyboard and mouse. However, research into the performance, satisfaction, and usage patterns of individuals with physical disabilities has not been reported. In this article, we report on a study that provides initial insights into the efficacy of existing speech recognition systems with respect to individuals with physical disabilities. Our results confirm that productivity does not differ between traditional users and those with physical disabilities. In contrast, numerous differences were observed when users rated their satisfaction with the system and when usage patterns were analyzed. Published online: 18 May 2001  相似文献
