Left ventricular outflow tract obstruction after mitral valve replacement

A method of posterior mitral annulus remodeling is presented. The posterior annulus is divided into three segments, each segment encircled by a suture that is passed in a tourniquet. Coaptation of the leaflets can be achieved by tightening the tourniquets while the ventricle is being filled. This technique is simple and quick, avoids the use of foreign material, and requires less expertise and judgment than traditional annuloplasties.     

Gold metallizations for eutectic bonding of silicon wafers

Gold eutectic bonding of silicon wafers is a good candidate for wafer level vacuum packaging of vibrating MEMS: in this paper we investigated several e-beam evaporated metallizations stacks including a titanium adhesion layer, an optional diffusion barrier (Ni or Pt) and a gold film for eutectic bonding on Si and SiO₂/Si wafers. Interdiffusion in the multilayers for annealing temperatures (380–430°C) larger than the Au–Si eutectic temperature (363°C) and times corresponding to a bonding process was characterized by RBS, roughness and resistivity measurements. Au/Pt/Ti and Au/Ti/SiO₂ were found to have the best characteristics for bonding. This was confirmed by bonding experiments.     

SAPHO syndrome and pyoderma gangrenosum: is it fortuitous?

Pyoderma gangrenosum is well known as an associated feature of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Recently, higher than normal prevalence of IBD in patients with the SAPHO (synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, osteitis) syndrome has been reported. However, the association of pyoderma gangrenosum with SAPHO syndrome without definitely excluded IBD has not been reported. We describe a case that suggests a possible connection between these 2 entities.     

Liquid crystal dot-matrix display using multiplexed guest-host effect

A dyed dot-matrix liquid crystal display is described, which is fully compatible with standard LC technology. High brightness and large viewing angle are achieved using the guest-host effect without polarizers. Also, a medium range multiplexing capability is demonstrated over a large temperature range.     

Semi-Analytical Modeling of Short-Channel Effects in Si and Ge Symmetrical Double-Gate MOSFETs

A simple analytical expression of the 2-D potential distribution along the channel of silicon symmetrical double-gate (DG) MOSFETs in weak inversion is derived. The analytical solution of the potential distribution is compared with the numerical solution of the 2-D Poisson's equation in terms of the channel length L, the silicon thickness t _Si, and the gate oxide thickness t _OX. The obtained results show that the analytical solution describes, with good accuracy, the potential distribution along the channel at different positions from the gate interfaces for well-designed devices when the ratio of L/t _Si is ges 2-3. Based on the 2-D extra potential induced in the silicon film due to short-channel effects (SCEs), a semi-analytical expression for the subthreshold drain current of short-channel devices is derived. From the obtained subthreshold characteristics, the extracted device parameters of the subthreshold slope, drain-induced barrier lowering, and threshold voltage are discussed. Application of the proposed model to devices with silicon replaced by germanium demonstrates that the germanium DG MOSFETs are more prone to SCEs.     

Arrays of High Tilt-Angle Micromirrors for Multiobject Spectroscopy

Micromirror arrays are promising components for generating reflective slit masks in future multiobject spectrographs. The micromirrors, 100 mum times200 mum in size, are etched in bulk single crystal silicon, whereas a hidden suspension is realized by surface micromachining. The micromirrors are actuated electrostatically by electrodes located on a second chip. The use of silicon on insulator (SOI) wafers for both mirror and electrode chip ensures thermal compatibility for cryogenic operation. A system of multiple landing beams has been developed, which latches the mirror at a well-defined tilt angle when actuated. Arrays of 5times5 micromirrors have been realized. The tilt angle obtained is 20deg at a pull-in voltage of 90 V. Measurements with an optical profiler showed that the tilt angle of the actuated and locked mirror is stable with a precision of 1 arcmin over a range of 15 V. This locking system makes the tilt angle independent from process variations across the wafer and, thus, provides uniform tilt angle over the whole array. The surface quality of the mirrors in actuated state is better than 10-nm peak to valley and the local roughness is about 1-nm root mean square     

Genotypic characterization of seven strains of Mycoplasma fermentans isolated from synovial fluids of patients with arthritis

We performed a genotypic characterization of seven strains of Mycoplasma fermentans which have been isolated from the synovial fluid of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (n = 2), spondyloarthropathy (n = 1), and unclassified arthritis (n = 4). We compared them to three reference strains (strains PG18 and K7 and incognitus strain) and to a clinical isolate from the urethra of a patient with nongonococcal urethritis. The characterization methods included electrophoresis of native DNA, arbitrarily primed PCR, and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis following conventional and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Southern blot analysis with a probe internal to an insertion sequence was performed with the restriction products produced by the last two techniques. No extrachromosomal DNA sequences were detected. The M. fermentans strains identified by these methods did not present a unique profile, but they could be separated into two main categories: four articular isolates were genetically related to PG18 and the three other isolates, the urethral isolate, and the incognitus strain were related to K7. We also looked for the presence of the bacteriophage MAV1 (associated with the arthritogenic property of Mycoplasma arthritidis in rodents) in the M. fermentans strains. MAV1 DNA was not detected in either the clinical isolates or the reference strains of M. fermentans.
