We cross-sectionally examined the relationship between age, optic disc area, refraction, and gender and optic disc topography and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) measurements, using optical imaging techniques. One eye from each of 155 Caucasian subjects (age range 23.0-80.8 y) without ocular pathology was included. Measurements were obtained by using the Heidelberg Retina Tomography (HRT), the GDx Nerve Fiber Analyzer, and the Optical Coherence Tomograph (OCT). The effects of age were small (R2 < 17%) and were limited to specific HRT, GDx, and OCT parameters. Disc area was significantly associated with most HRT parameters and isolated GDx and OCT parameters. Refraction and gender were not significantly associated with any optic disc or RNFL parameters. Although effects of age on the optic disc and RNFL are small, they should be considered in monitoring ocular disease. Optic disc area should be considered when cross-sectionally evaluating disc topography and, to a lesser extent, RNFL thickness.  相似文献

Permanent magnet bearings offer no wear and no mechanical friction. Recently, Rare Earth (RE) permanent magnets have been used, which give rise to force fields 20 times greater than those of common magnets. RE also allows to build magnets suitable for bearings of every shape. RE bearings are then profitable. On the other hand, permanent magnet bearings are unstable. For example, the levitated ring of the axial bearing with opposite magnetic fields of Fig. 1 is stable axially, but unstable radially. It has been, however, verified that a permanent magnet system may become stable under peculiar conditions. As an example, if the above-mentioned levitated ring is subjected to a parametric axial excitation, its radial instability can be removed. In our opinion, it may also be possible that stability is obtained by exploiting microstructural properties of ferromagnetic materials, especially of RE, like dimensional and magnetic changes if subjected to mechanical stresses. Then, in this paper, the stability of the levitated member of an RE axial ring bearing is investigated by a suitable exploitation of magnetoelastic properties of the ring.

Bacterial polysaccharides and polyhydroxyalkanoates present physical and chemical characteristics that impart them diverse functional properties, including the ability to produce structures from nano- to macroscale (e.g., spheres, capsules, beads). Such structures may be specially designed to fulfill the requirements of specific applications in different areas, either alone or conjugated with other polymers by means of ionic interactions, hydrogen bonding, or chemical reactions. The interest on using such biomaterials has been increasing due to their unique functional properties, nontoxicity, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. Glioblastoma (GBM) is one of the most aggressive tumors of the central nervous system, characterized by a wide range of inter- and intratumor heterogeneity. Accumulation of fatty acids (FA) metabolites was associated with a low survival rate in high-grade glioma patients. The diversity of brain lipids, especially polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), is greater than in all other organs and several classes of proteins, such as FA transport proteins (FATPs), and FA translocases are considered principal candidates for PUFAs transport through BBB and delivery of PUFAs to brain cells. Among these, the CD36 FA translocase promotes long-chain FA uptake as well as oxidated lipoproteins. Moreover, CD36 binds and recognizes thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1), an extracellular matrix protein that was shown to play a multifaceted role in cancer as part of the tumor microenvironment. Effects on tumor cells are mediated by TSP-1 through the interaction with CD36 as well as CD47, a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily. TSP-1/CD47 interactions have an important role in the modulation of glioma cell invasion and angiogenesis in GBM. Separately, FA, the two membrane receptors CD36, CD47, and their joint ligand TSP-1 all play a part in GBM pathogenesis. The last research has put in light their interconnection/interrelationship in order to exert a cumulative effect in the modulation of the GBM molecular network.  相似文献

Mature T-cell lymphomas (MTCLs) represent a heterogeneous group of aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphomas comprising different entities. Anthracycline-based regimens are considered the standard of care in the front-line treatment. However, responses to these approaches have been neither adequate nor durable, and new treatment strategies are urgently needed to improve survival. Genomic instability is a common feature of cancer cells and can be caused by aberrations in the DNA damage response (DDR) and DNA repair mechanisms. Consistently, molecules involved in DDR are being targeted to successfully sensitize cancer cells to chemotherapy. Recent studies showed that some hematological malignancies display constitutive DNA damage and intrinsic DDR activation, but these features have not been investigated yet in MTCLs. In this study, we employed a panel of malignant T cell lines, and we report for the first time the characterization of intrinsic DNA damage and basal DDR activation in preclinical models in T-cell lymphoma. Moreover, we report the efficacy of targeting the apical kinase ATM using the inhibitor AZD0156, in combination with standard chemotherapy to promote apoptotic cell death. These findings suggest that DDR is an attractive pathway to be pharmacologically targeted when developing novel therapies and improving MTCL patients’ outcomes.  相似文献

Many factors can influence the shelf-life product, such as pH, water activity, nutrient levels available oxygen, etc. Variations in food pH could occur due to microorganism growth and chemical reactions that may impact flavour, consistency and shelf-life. The objective of this paper was to obtain and characterize the fast pH-colourimetric indicator device, applying a simple manufacturing technique, using food grade and biodegradable materials. The intelligent film was based on natural compounds as chitosan and anthocyanin (pH-colourimetric indicator). Chitosan intelligent films (C-ATH, 2.0 g/100 g) were obtained incorporating anthocyanin (1.0 g/100 g) in matrix films. Initially, a dark violet colour was observed in chitosan films dried. When immersed in different pH buffers, the colour range of the films varied from pink (in acid pH) to bluish-green (in neutral pH) and to violet (in basic pH). The water solubility and water vapour transmission rate of C-ATH were decreased to 60% and 48%, respectively, as compared to control film (CF, without indicator). The mechanical properties such as tensile strength and rigidity were maintained, and the elongation at break was reduced to 47% compared to CF. The advantages of this system were the simple manufacturing process, biodegradability and usage of natural and safe compounds.  相似文献

Common wheat is one of the most important staple food crops worldwide. However, unlike other important staple crops such as maize or soybean, genetically modified (GM) wheat is not yet present in the global food market. Nonetheless, in the recent past, the adventitious presence of GM glyphosate-tolerant volunteers was reported in open wheat fields in the USA. The European Union Reference Laboratory for GM Food and Feed (EURL-GMFF) was therefore called to develop a strategy to detect such unauthorised GM wheat in wheat samples by using both taxon-specific and screening tests. Two candidate common wheat taxon-specific real-time PCR methods were suggested, one targeting ssII-D gene coding for starch synthase and the other targeting waxy-D1 gene, coding for granule-bound starch synthase. In the present study, the two above-mentioned real-time PCR taxon-specific methods were in-house verified and compared, proposing droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) as a new tool for supporting the application of the European Network of GMO Laboratories (ENGL) established method performance criteria. Preliminary performance data of waxy-D1 and ssII-D methods in ddPCR format are shown too to give a contribution to the bridging process from the consolidated to the emerging quantitative PCR methodology.  相似文献

Nanocomposites of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared through melt blending in a batch mixer (torque rheometer equipped with a mixing chamber). The morphology, rheological behavior and electrical conductivity were investigated through transmission electron microscopy, dynamic oscillatory rheometry and the two‐probe method. The nanocomposite with 0.5 wt% MWCNT content presented a uniform dispersion through the PVDF matrix, whereas that with 1 wt% started to present a percolated network. For the nanocomposites with 2 and 5 wt% MWCNTs the formation of this nanotube network was clearly evident. The electrical percolation threshold at room temperature found for this system was about 1.2 wt% MWCNTs. The rheological percolation threshold fitted from viscosity was about 1 wt%, while the threshold fitted from storage modulus was 0.9 wt%. Thus fewer nanotubes are needed to approach the rheological percolation threshold than the electrical percolation threshold. Copyright © 2010 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献
