The development of complex distributed systems demands the creation of suitable architectural styles (or paradigms) and related runtime infrastructures. An emerging style that is receiving increasing attention is based on the notion of event. In an event-based architecture, distributed software components interact by generating and consuming events. An event is the occurrence of some state change in a component of a software system, made visible to the external world. The occurrence of an event in a component is asynchronously notified to any other component that has declared some interest in it. This paradigm (usually called “publish/subscribe”, from the names of the two basic operations that regulate the communication) holds the promise of supporting a flexible and effective interaction among highly reconfigurable, distributed software components. In the past two years, we have developed an object-oriented infrastructure called JEDI (Java event-based distributed infrastructure). JEDI supports the development and operation of event-based systems and has been used to implement a significant example of distributed system, namely, the OPSS workflow management system (WFMS). The paper illustrates the main features of JEDI and how we have used them to implement OPSS. Moreover, the paper provides an initial evaluation of our experiences in using the event-based architectural style and a classification of some of the event-based infrastructures presented in the literature  相似文献

Several application domains involve detecting complex situations and reacting to them. This asks for a Complex Event Processing (CEP) middleware specifically designed to timely process large amounts of event notifications as they flow from the peripheral to the center of the system, to identify the composite events relevant for the application. To answer this need we designed T-Rex, a new CEP middleware that combines expressiveness and efficiency. On the one hand, it adopts a language (TESLA) explicitly conceived to easily and naturally describe composite events. On the other hand, it provides an efficient event detection algorithm based on automata to interpret TESLA rules. Our evaluation shows that the T-Rex engine can process a large number of complex rules with a reduced overhead, even in the presence of challenging workloads.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS OF THE STUDY: Valve repair, where suitable, is the preferred option in patients who require mitral surgery. A number of studies have shown excellent long-term results, but most were undertaken in tertiary referral centers with a high throughput of patients. METHODS: We present our experience in 60 patients, aged 60 +/- 14 years, undergoing repair between 1984 and 1993. Most patients (83%) were in New York Heart Association (NYHA) class II or III at the time of surgery; 27% had concomitant ischemic heart disease. Almost all (98%) had posterior leaflet repair and 18% had anterior leaflet repair. Eight surgeons each performed a mean of 7.5 operations during this period. RESULTS: The 30-day mortality rate was 3.3%. There were seven late deaths. Five patients underwent reoperation for mitral regurgitation (two early, three late). At six years, 60% of patients were alive, or free of stroke or reoperation. Late follow up was obtained in 45 of 47 surviving patients: 95% were in NYHA class I or II; one-third were on anticoagulants for atrial fibrillation; 90% had mild (or less) mitral regurgitation on echocardiography. CONCLUSIONS: These data show that most patients have a very good outcome from valve repair surgery and encourage the trend towards operating earlier in the course of the disease. Adverse outcomes occurred mainly in patients who were highly symptomatic at the time of surgery. The high proportion of patients on postoperative anticoagulants underscores the importance of operating before atrial fibrillation becomes permanent.  相似文献

Process support systems (PSSs) support business organizations in modeling, improving and automating their business processes. Thanks to their ability in enacting process models, they can be used to guide people in performing their daily work and to automate the repetitive tasks that do not require human intervention. Given these potential benefits, it is surprising to observe that PSSs are not widely adopted. This is especially true in case of highly flexible and human-intensive processes, such as design processes in general and software processes in particular. This fact can be explained by observing that currently available PSSs do not fulfil some crucial needs of modern business organizations. One of their major drawbacks is that they do not offer adequate mechanisms to cope with unforeseen situations. They are good at supporting business processes if all proceeds as expected, but if an unexpected situation is met, which would require one to deviate from the process model, they often become more an obstacle than a help. This paper deals with the problem of managing unforeseen situations that require deviations from the process model during enactment in the context of the PROSYT (PROcess Support sYstem capable of Tolerating deviations) PSS. During process model enactment, PROSYT is capable of tolerating deviations from the process model by supporting users even when unexpected situations arise. Service oriented computing (SOC) has brought a simplification in the way distributed applications can be built. Mainstream approaches, however, failed to support dynamic, self-managed compositions that would empower even non-technical users to build their own orchestrations. Indeed, because of the changeable world in which they are embedded, service compositions must be able to adapt to changes that may happen at run-time. Unfortunately, mainstream SOC languages, like BPEL and BPMN, make it quite hard to develop such kind of self-adapting orchestrations. We claim that this is mostly due to the imperative programming paradigm they are based on. To overcome this limitation we propose a radically different, strongly declarative approach to model service orchestration, which is easier to use and results in more flexible and self-adapting orchestrations. An ad-hoc engine, leveraging well-known planning techniques, interprets such models to support dynamic service orchestration at run-time.  相似文献

Several complex event processing (CEP) middleware solutions have been proposed in the past. They act by processing primitive events generated by sources, extracting new knowledge in the form of composite events, and delivering them to interested sinks. Event-based applications often involve a large number of sources and sinks, possibly dispersed over a wide geographical area. To better support these scenarios, the CEP middleware can be internally built around several, distributed processors, which cooperate to provide the processing and routing service. This paper introduces and compares different deployment strategies for a CEP middleware, which define (i) how the processing load is distributed over different processors and (ii) how these processors interact to produce the required results and to deliver them to sinks. Our evaluation compares the presented solutions and shows their benefits with respect to a centralized deployment, both in terms of network traffic and in terms of forwarding delay.  相似文献

Content-based routing (CBR) provides a powerful and flexible foundation for distributed applications. Its communication model, based on implicit addressing, fosters decoupling among the communicating components, therefore meeting the needs of many dynamic scenarios, including mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). Unfortunately, the characteristics of the CBR model are only rarely met by available systems, which typically assume that application-level routers are organized in a tree-shaped network with a fixed topology. In this paper, we present COMAN, a protocol to organize the nodes of a MANET in a tree-shaped network able to 1) self- repair to tolerate the frequent topological reconfigurations typical of MANETs and 2) achieve this goal through repair strategies that minimize the changes that may impact the CBR layer exploiting the tree. COMAN is implemented and publicly available. Here, we report about its performance in simulated scenarios, as well as in real-world experiments. The results confirm that its characteristics enable reliable and efficient CBR on MANETs.  相似文献
