Chromated copper arsenate (CCA), an arsenicbased wood preservative, is toxic to human health and the environment. Although CCA is stable in seasoned wood, there are potential dangers during CCA manufacture, lumber treatment, and waste disposal. This research was conducted to study the effectiveness of soy products to replace toxic chromium and arsenic compounds in wood preservative formulations. Three soy product (Arpro 2100, HM 90, and Supro 760) were used as fixative agents in preservative solutions containing anhydrous CuSO4 and Na2B4O7·10H2O. The decay resistance of treated wood blocks was measured by a soil-block culture method. Despite the large molecular sizes of copper-protein and copper-boron-protein complexes, southern pine sapwood was treatable with these preservative formulations. Wood samples treated with >6 kg°m−3 CuSO4 and 7.5 kg·m−3 soy product, and subsequently leached for 3 d and exposed to the decay fungus Gloeophyllum trabeum (Fr.) Mur., sustained only 0.5% weight loss over 12 wk. Wood samples needed 40 kg·m−3 CuSO4 and 50 kg·m−3 soy protein to resist the copper-tolerant decay fungus Postia placenta (Fr.) M. Lars. & Lomb. These results suggest that soy-based wood preservatives can prevent wood products from fungal attack and can replace CCA.  相似文献

The functional properties of low- and high-M.W. (LMW and HMW, respectively) acidic subunits and the basic subunit separated from the 11S soy protein fraction were studied and compared with the functional properties of the 11S fraction. Among the functional properties investigated were solubility, emulsification, and viscosity. The results showed that the LMW acidic subunit had higher solubility than the HMW acidic subunit. Among all the samples, the LMW subunit separated by using β-mercaptoethanol (ME) was the most soluble, with a solubility of 98–100% at a pH of 6–12. The solubility profile of the HMW subunit followed a pattern similar to the solubility of 11S. The lowest solubility was observed around pH values in the range close to the isoelectric point for both the LMW and HMW subunit. The basic subunit was not soluble in the pH range 3–10; however, the solubility increased more than 50% at pH 13 compared to the solubility at pH 10. The emulsification capacity of all subunits was higher than 11S in the following descending order: LMW, basic, HMW, 11S. Emulsification activity and stability of the subunits were greater than those of the 11S samples at room temperature and 95°C. With the exception of the LMW subunit separated with ME, the subunits had a higher viscosity than 11S. The basic subunit separated with sodium bisulfite had the highest viscosity of all the samples tested.  相似文献

The Autocontrol Project is concerned with the accessing, processing and communication of high quality information so that a clinical team can make and implement decisions for practice change, and then evaluate if improvement has been achieved. High quality information is used as evidence for change. In this study, we have evaluated how evidence is used by a clinical team to explain an identified problem of inappropriate use of blood gas tests. In an experimental study of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, video recordings of team meetings of nurses and doctors were undertaken, structured according to a problem-based format. Evidence of current practice patterns derived from the hospital information system, as well as the results of a questionnaire to the unit's staff about knowledge and use of blood gas measurements, were supplied to the participants beforehand. At the second meeting, the output of the first meetings and a summarised analysis of pertinent literature were made available. This second meeting was required to finalise the list of causes of inappropriate blood gas use and propose pragmatic strategies for practice change. The video data of the meetings were coded to analyse the use of evidence, the categories of causes, issues and solutions proposed, and the quality of team interaction. The results indicate that in order to achieve consensus, the team used different types of evidence, including objective evidence of practice patterns, personal experience about direct and indirect organisational influences, and literature-based research evidence of best practice. Furthermore, group dynamics were favoured by the problem-based meeting structure, and a high level of cognitive critiquing between team members was observed. This research suggests that a combination of approaches involving identification of both operational factors (e.g. appropriate access to different types of evidence and meeting structure) and cognitive and behavioural approaches (e.g. ensuring expression of different viewpoints) is needed to support strategic decision-making for practice change in a clinical unit. This combined approach should favourably influence the provision of an effective and efficient evidence support environment for the clinical team.  相似文献

Functional properties (solubility, foaming capacity and stability, emulsifying capacity, emulsion stability, heat coagulability, heat gelation and film formation) of protein extracted by 45% ethanol/55% 0.1 M NaOH from flaked, defatted, undergermed corn during the Sequential Extraction Process (SEP) were evaluated and compared with those of a laboratory-prepared soy protein concentrate. SEP is a new approach to corn fractionation that recycles the ethanol produced from the fermentation of cornstarch to unstream steps of protein extraction and the simultaneous extraction of corn oil and dehydration of the ethanol. Freeze-dried corn protein extracts contained at least 80% crude protein (dry basis), which is indicative of protein concentrates. SEP protein concentrates had solubilities in water of greater than 80% at pH values of 7 or above and were significantly more soluble than the soy protein concentrate at pH above 3. SEP corn proteins also showed better heat stabilities and greater emulsifying capacities and emulsion stabilities. Dilute dispersions (0.1%) of corn protein produced substantial but less stable foams. Corn proteins produced films similar to zein and soy protein films but were unable to form heat-induced gels. These results indicate that SEP produces a protein concentrate with functional properties suitable for food and industrial uses.
