Evaluation of the effect of processing on cocoa polyphenols: antiradical activity,anthocyanins and procyanidins profiling from raw beans to chocolate

The content and composition of anthocyanins and procyanidins in fermented cocoa beans (from different geographic origins: Ecuador, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Nigeria), roasted nibs, cocoa mass and chocolate were determined, beside the determination of the total antiradical capacity. Concerning geographic origin, cocoa beans and processed products from Ecuador showed the highest levels of anthocyanins, followed by Nigeria and Cameroon. Generally, as cocoa beans were further processed, the levels of anthocyanins and flavan‐3‐ols decreased. The largest observed losses of phenolics occurred during roasting. A progressive decreasing trend in polyphenol concentration was observed in the other processed samples as well. Despite the original content of polyphenols in raw cocoa beans, technological processes imply a significant impact on cocoa quality, confirming the need of specific optimisation to obtain high value chocolate.     

Implementation of RNS-Based Distributed Arithmetic Discrete Wavelet Transform Architectures Using Field-Programmable Logic

Currently there are design barriers inhibiting the implementation of high-precision digital signal processing (DSP) objects with field programmable logic (FPL) devices. This paper explores overcoming these barriers by fusing together the popular distributed arithmetic (DA) method with the residue number system (RNS) for use in FPL-centric designs. The new design paradigm is studied in the context of a high-performance filter bank and a discrete wavelet transform (DWT). The proposed design paradigm is facilitated by a new RNS accumulator structure based on a carry save adder (CSA). The reported methodology also introduces a polyphase filter structure that results in a reduced look-up table (LUT) budget. The 2C-DA and RNS-DA are compared, in the context of a FPL implementation strategy, using a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) filter bank as a common design theme. The results show that the RNS-DA, compared to a traditional 2C-DA design, enjoys a performance advantage that increases with precision (wordlength).     

X-ray electron spectroscopic investigation of the structure of double lead silicate glasses

The method of x-ray electron spectroscopy is used to investigate lead silicatexPbO(1 -x) · SiO₂ (x - 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.55, 0.667) glasses. The concentration dependences of the spectra of inner Pb4f, Si2p, and Ols levels led to the conclusion that for low contents of PbO, lead is present in the glass in the form of modifying ions, whereas in high concentrations, it plays the role of glass former. Restructuring in the glass occurs for about 50% molar concentration of PbO. The Pb - O bond in the glass is more ionic than in PbO. With an increase in the PbO content in the glass, the Pb - O bond becomes closer to that of lead monoxide, i.e., is more covalent.     

Contribution a l'etude du polymorphisme de Ga2S3: Structure cristalline de Mn0,23Ga1,85S3

The Mn_0.23Ga_1.85S₃ phase belongs to the solid solution $\text{ф}{}_0$, stable at low temperature in the Ga₂S₃MnS system. It is hexagonal superstructure of the wurtzite, with the Ga₂S₃α′ type ($\text{a}\text{= 6.397}\text{A}\text{?}$; $\text{c}\text{= 18.027}\text{A}\text{?}$Z = 6; space groupe P6₁ or P6₅). Its crystal structure has been refined by the least squares method to a final R = 0.06 with 323 independant reflections. This structure is closely related to Ga₂S₃ α described by Hahn and Frank, and differs only by the partial occupation of the vacant metal site of Ga₂S₃ by Mn atoms in statistical disorder.     

Formal techniques for performance analysis: blending SAN and PEPA

In this paper we consider two performance modelling techniques from the perspectives of model construction, generation of an underlying continuous time Markov process, and the potential for reduction in the Markov process. Such careful comparison of modelling techniques allows us to appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches, and facilitates cross-fertilization between them. In the present case we take a characteristic of one formalism, functional rates in Stochastic Automata Networks, and introduce it to the other formalism, Performance Evaluation Process Algebra. We investigate the benefits of this cross-fertilization, particularly from the perspectives of Markov process generation and reduction.     

Accurate estimation of environment parameters from ultrasonic data

This paper describes a robust and accurate ultrasonic sensing system for a mobile robot. The system continuously updates a local map of the environment in which obstacles are represented by straight lines or points in a robot centered coordinate frame. The presented algorithms use a Kalman filter for the reduction of the noise in the ultrasonic data and use a systematical error correction (‘bundle correction’) to reduce the uncertainty in obstacle direction. Experiments are carried out in simulation and with a real mobile robot system. Results show that the accuracy with which line parameters can be estimated is in the order of 1 degree for the orientation and about 2 cm for the position. The effect of the bundle correction is significant and maximal when the robot approaches walls under a small angle.     

External and internal calibration of the MHC class I-specific receptor Ly49A on murine natural killer cells

Expression of the H-2Dd-specific inhibitory receptor Ly49A on murine NK cells is subject to MHC class I-dependent modulation in vivo. As a result, NK cells in H-2Dd-transgenic mice express low cell surface levels of Ly49A, whereas NK cells from nontransgenic C57BL/6 (B6) mice express high levels. The purpose of this study was to assess the role of MHC class I molecules on the NK cell itself vs those on surrounding cells in this calibration and to test whether the Ly49A levels are subject to regulation in mature NK cells also. Analysis of transgenic mice with mosaic expression of an H-2Dd/Ld transgene showed that MHC class I molecules on surrounding cells (external ligands) and on the NK cell itself (internal ligands) played distinct roles in the determination of Ly49A levels. External ligands were involved in down-regulation of Ly49A levels in vivo, whereas internal ligands kept the down-regulated levels of Ly49A low upon NK cell activation in vitro. Furthermore, in an experimental system based on adoptive transfer of spleen cells, receptor down-regulation of Ly49A occurred as a rapid adaptation process in mature NK cells after interaction with the H-2Dd ligand in vivo. This suggests that Ly49 levels are not fixed but can be changed in mature NK cells when they are exposed to a changed MHC class I environment.     

Comportement chaotique des filtres récursifs adaptatifs: application à la compression des signaux téléphoniques

Adaptive filtering gives simple iterative methods for extracting a useful signal by linearly filtering an observation correlated with this useful signal. When the observation contains past values of the filter output—as is the case for a recursive structure— the adaptive filter is a non linear operator which can generate complex behaviours even though adaptation is a standard derivative of the gradient algorithm. Such behaviours are observed in a particular case : theArma adaptive prediction with a sinusoidal input. A slow adaptation speed involves a quasi-periodic behaviour due to the locally unstable character of the predictor. This phenomenon called selfstabilization persists as the adaptation speed increases. Its study is more complicated : the behaviour becomes chaotic. As an illustration, the digitization of telephone signals throughArma adaptive prediction shows the necessity of controlling the qualitative behaviour of the adaptive filtering solutions.
