The objective of this research was to study the removal of cadmium and lead from an aqueous solution through a biological treatment. For this purpose a glass-ceramic material was manufactured from industrial and urban wastes. Biofilms of microorganisms found in wastewater were developed on its surface, and continuous tests were conducted in the presence and absence of the biofilm to analyze the glass-ceramic's ability to remove the heavy metals from an aqueous environment. The results suggest that this bioremediation process, developed on an industrial scale, could represent an alternative to the chemical processes currently used.  相似文献

The binding of IgG in antiserum to Escherichia coli J5 to the surface of Enterobacteriaceae and to cell wall fragments released from serum-exposed bacteria was studied in a search for potentially protective epitopes other than lipopolysaccharide (LPS). IgG titers to multiple heterologous gram-negative smooth bacteria increased following incubation of the bacteria in serum and decreased following absorption with serum-exposed heterologous bacteria. IgG eluted from absorbing bacteria bound to at least three conserved bacterial outer membrane proteins (OMPs), but not LPS, as assessed by immunoblotting. The same OMPs were present in LPS-containing macromolecular cell wall fragments released by incubation of heterologous gram-negative bacteria in human serum. Part of the protection offered by J5 antiserum could be from binding of IgG to conserved OMPs at the bacterial surface or to OMPs in cell-wall fragments released from dying bacteria.  相似文献

In Italy solar thermal energy and energy from biogas are two possible means of reducing dependence on energy imports. Using a multiperiod LP model (MARKAL) the authors assessed the likely potential of both technologies under various circumstances. The study covered the period 1980–2005, in five segments of five years. It focused only on the subsystem of the energy end-uses which can be substituted for by solar thermal and biogas technologies. The overall non-renewable sources which can be saved in 20 years by these technologies total 450 PJ (1 PJ = 101 5 J) if the fuel prices rise at 0 per cent average annual, 1450 PJ if the fuel prices rise at 4.2 per cent average annual, 1860 PJ if the fuel prices rise at 7.2 per cent average annual and 3780 PJ if the fuel prices rise at 15 per cent average annual. However the most competitive technologies appear to be solar water heaters used mainly in the private and commercial sectors and biogas systems used mainly in the agricultural sector. The study was carried out by APRE under ENEA (formerly CNEN) contract and was intended to serve as an analytical basis for establishing an overall development and demonstration strategy for end-use renewable technologies in Italy.  相似文献

Suitable parameter sets for the CHARMm force field were derived for the structural units in polychlorophosphazene [P=N, P N, P Cl] using the Dinur Hagler energy second derivative procedure based on quantum mechanical SCI calculations using the 6–31G* basis set. To validate the reliability of the parameter set, structural results obtained with CHARMm for the adopted model compounds (OP2NCl5 and OP3N2Cl5) were compared with those derived fromab initio quantum mechanics using the 6–31G* basis set. Application of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in combinatioin with the available X-ray diffraction data provided structural and conformational information on the polymer. The calculation made using the periodic boundary conditions (PBC) agree well with the polychlorophosphazene ordered in a monoclinic unit cell (a=5.98,b=12.99,c=4.92 A; β=111.7). This model was stabilized mainly by the image atoms contribution to the electrostatic energy term and had aquasi-planar conformation of the backbone chain (glide symmetry). The MD calculations also provided evidence that the difference between single and double PN bonds is less marked than that measured experimentally. This result is, however, in agreement with more recent and accurate X-ray studies on poly(methylphosphazene). Validation of the polymer model provided a complete picture, otherwise experimentally inaccessible, of the internal fluctuations of the polymeric chains.  相似文献

The rationale for anti-tumour necrosis factor-alpha (anti-TNFalpha) therapy in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is based on experiments on cultures of human rheumatoidjoint tissue, supported by experiments in animal models, all of which demonstrated that anti-TNFalpha antibody had profound effects on the disease activity. Clinical trials have substantiated this concept, and we have used the serum samples from the clinical trials, as well as biopsies to study the changes occurring during anti-TNFalpha therapy as clues to the pathogenesis of RA. The major effects of anti-TNFalpha therapy are in downregulating cytokine activity, and in reducing leucocyte trafficking to the joints.  相似文献

Myocardial infarction (MI) remains the leading cause of death in the western world. Despite advancements in interventional revascularization technologies, many patients are not candidates for them due to comorbidities or lack of local resources. Non-invasive approaches to accelerate revascularization within ischemic tissues through angiogenesis by providing Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) in protein or gene form has been effective in animal models but not in humans likely due to its short half-life and systemic toxicity. Here, we tested the hypothesis that PR1P, a small VEGF binding peptide that we developed, which stabilizes and upregulates endogenous VEGF, could be used to improve outcome from MI in rodents. To test this hypothesis, we induced MI in mice and rats via left coronary artery ligation and then treated animals with every other day intraperitoneal PR1P or scrambled peptide for 14 days. Hemodynamic monitoring and echocardiography in mice and echocardiography in rats at 14 days showed PR1P significantly improved multiple functional markers of heart function, including stroke volume and cardiac output. Furthermore, molecular biology and histological analyses of tissue samples showed that systemic PR1P targeted, stabilized and upregulated endogenous VEGF within ischemic myocardium. We conclude that PR1P is a potential non-invasive candidate therapeutic for MI.  相似文献

The Fe/ZrO2 catalyst (1% Fe by weight) shows a strong adsorption capacity toward the nitric oxide (at room temperature the ratio NOFe is ca. 0.5) as a consequence of the formation of a highly dispersed iron phase after reduction at 500–773 K. Nitric oxide is adsorbed mainly as nitrosyl species on the reduced surface where the Fe2+ sites are prevailing, but it is easily oxidised by oxygen forming nitrito and nitrato species adsorbed on the support. However, in the presence of a reducing gas such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide, propane and ammonia at 473–573 K the Fe-nitrosyl species react producing nitrogen, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide and water, as detected by FTIR and mass spectrometers. The results show that nitric oxide reduction is more facile with hydrogen containing molecules than with CO, probably due the co-operation of spillover effects. Experiments carried out with the same gases in the presence of oxygen show, however, a reduced dissociative activity of the surface iron sites toward the species NOχ formed by NO oxidation and therefore the reactivity is shifted to higher temperatures.  相似文献

A novel process was developed for the bitumen emulsion upgrading, wherein emulsion breaking and upgrading occurred in the same reactor using H2 generated in situ from the water in the emulsion via the water gas shift reaction (WGSR). In this study, dibenzothiophene (DBT) was chosen as a model compound to investigate the effect of water and in situ H2 on hydrodesulfurization (HDS). All the experiments were performed in a 1-L autoclave reactor at temperatures between 300 and 380 °C using in situ H2 and ex situ H2 (externally supplied H2) over a dispersed Mo catalyst formed from phosphomolybdic acid (PMA). At very low water content, water was found to promote the HDS reaction in the ex situ H2 run probably because it facilitates the formation of more active dispersed MoSx species. At higher water content, however, water inhibits every individual reaction in the reaction network in the HDS of DBT, blocking the hydrogenation pathway more than the hydrogenolysis pathway. The relative reactivity of the in situ and ex situ H2 depends on the water content present in the reaction system. At an optimized mole ratio of H2O:CO (1.35), higher HDS activity was observed in the in situ H2 run compared to ex situ H2 run, and particularly, the hydrogenation pathway was promoted in the in situ H2 run.  相似文献
