Understanding silica-supported metal catalysts: Pd/silica as a case study

Supported metal catalysts, particularly noble metals supported on SiO₂, have attracted considerable attention due to the importance of the silica–metal interface in heterogeneous catalysis and in electronic device fabrication. Several important issues, e.g., the stability of the metal–oxide interface at working temperatures and pressures, are not well-understood. In this review, the present status of our understanding of the metal–silica interface is reviewed. Recent results of model studies in our laboratories on Pd/SiO₂/Mo(1 1 2) using LEED, AES and STM are reported. In this work, epitaxial, ultrathin, well-ordered SiO₂ films were grown on a Mo(1 1 2) substrate to circumvent complications that frequently arise from the silica–silicon interface present in silica thin films grown on silicon.     

Adaptive antenna system design for multi-element combining with transient interrupted channels

This paper presents an analysis and design procedure for a buoyant cable array antenna used for satellite communications. The towed multi-element array is susceptible to washovers and fluctuations due to the ocean wave interaction with the floating hose where the elements are housed. A model of system performance for coherent multi-element combining is presented based on the dropouts and fades of the individual elements. The array design, including the number and spacing of elements, is shown to be highly dependent on the individual element exposure characteristics and the degree of correlation of the fades between channels. The joint statistics of the array are analyzed using a binary conditional element exposure model and a first-order Markov interelement correlation model. Using this analysis, a family of array designs meeting the communications requirements is produced.     

A real-time neural system for color constancy

A neural network approach to the problem of color constancy is presented. Various algorithms based on Land's retinex theory are discussed with respect to neurobiological parallels, computational efficiency, and suitability for VLSI implementation. The efficiency of one algorithm is improved by the application of resistive grids and is tested in computer simulations; the simulations make clear the strengths and weaknesses of the algorithm. A novel extension to the algorithm is developed to address its weaknesses. An electronic system that is based on the original algorithm and that operates at video rates was built using subthreshold analog CMOS VLSI resistive grids. The system displays color constancy abilities and qualitatively mimics aspects of human color perception.

Maltreated children's memory: Accuracy, suggestibility, and psychopathology.

Memory, suggestibility, stress arousal, and trauma-related psychopathology were examined in 328 3- to 16-year-olds involved in forensic investigations of abuse and neglect. Children's memory and suggestibility were assessed for a medical examination and venipuncture. Being older and scoring higher in cognitive functioning were related to fewer inaccuracies. In addition, cortisol level and trauma symptoms in children who reported more dissociative tendencies were associated with increased memory error, whereas cortisol level and trauma symptoms were not associated with increased error for children who reported fewer dissociative tendencies. Sexual and/or physical abuse predicted greater accuracy. The study contributes important new information to scientific understanding of maltreatment, psychopathology, and eyewitness memory in children. Phylogenetic scanning: a computer-assisted algorithm for mapping gene conversions and other recombinational events

An algorithm, 'phylogenetic scanning', is described for mapping gene conversion events where comparative DNA sequence data are available from different species. In this algorithm, sets of hypothetical phylogenetic trees are constructed that describe possible sequence relationships due to gene conversions in different species lineages; these trees are then evaluated by the principle of parsimony at intervals in the sequence alignment. When used to map gene conversion events that occurred between the pair of gamma-globin genes of higher primates, the algorithm gives results nearly identical to those obtained using a tedious manual approach. Suggestions are also provided for adaptation of this procedure to the analysis of other recombination events.     

Establishment and neurite outgrowth properties of neonatal and adult rat olfactory bulb glial cell lines

Two glial cell types surround olfactory axons and glomeruli in the olfactory bulb (OB) and may influence synapse development and regeneration. OB astrocytes resemble type-1 astrocytes, and OB ensheathing cells resemble non-myelinating Schwann cells. We have produced clonal OB astrocyte and ensheathing cell lines from rat neonatal and adult OB cultures by SV40 large T antigen transduction. These cell lines have been characterized by morphology, growth characteristics, immunophenotype, and ability to promote neurite outgrowth in vitro. Neonatal and adult ensheathing cell lines were found to support higher neurite outgrowth than OB astrocyte lines. Neonatal OB astrocyte lines were of two types, high and low outgrowth support. The low support astrocyte lines express J1 and a chondroitin sulfate-containing proteoglycan as do astrocytes encircling the neonatal glomeruli in vivo. The adult OB astrocyte cell lines supported lower levels of outgrowth than adult ensheathing cell lines. These results are consistent with a positive role for ensheathing cells in OB synapse regeneration, in vivo. Further, based on our results, we hypothesize that ensheathing cells and high-outgrowth astrocytes facilitate axon growth in vivo, while low outgrowth astrocytes inhibit axon growth and may facilitate glomerulus formation.     

Novel amplified fiber-optic recirculating delay line processor

The application of optical amplifiers (OAs) to fiber-optic delay line signal processing is demonstrated. Both erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) and semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are applicable. Analytical results are presented for both amplified and unamplified fiber-optic recirculating delay lines (AFORDLs and UFORDLs). In the AFORDL an OA is inserted in the fiber loop. It is shown that the active AFORDL structure is capable of realizing all-fiber filters not possible with the passive UFORDL. This result is significant because it shows that the OAs can function beyond just the trivial optical loss compensation to provide extra flexibility not available in passive designs. An AFORDL design is presented which has a pole near +1 and a zero at -1 in the Z-plane resulting in useful characteristics in the magnitude and phase responses. The results suggest that extension of the concept to higher-order filters has the potential to lead to the realization of more complex optical processors     

The nootropic correction of disorders in learning and memory processes induced by extreme exposures

Experiments on rats demonstrated that the low-intensity electromagnetic field (12.6 cm, 2375 MHz, power density 1 mW/cm2), motion sickness, and electroconvulsive shock provoked the retrograde amnesia in the passive avoidance test. The oxyracetam (100 mg/kg, i.p.), aniracetam (50 mg/kg, i.p.), nooglutil (50 mg/kg, i.p.), meclofenoxate (50 mg/kg, i.p.), pyracetam (200 mg/kg, i.p.), and GABA (200 mg/kg, i.p) prevented the memory-impairing effect of all these extreme factors. On the contrary, the N-acetylglycinamide, semax, and other nootropic drugs were effective only under one or two extreme conditions.     

The prospects for using the genetically engineered surface antigen of the hepatitis B virus (HBsAg) expressed by recombinant poxvirus strains as the basis for vaccines against hepatitis B

The use of a recombinant poxvirus (RPV) strain, expressing HBsAg in the process of reproduction in different bioreactor systems under stationary and bioreactor conditions of cultivation, made it possible to obtain highly purified HBsAg. The identity and purity of HBsAg was confirmed by the analysis of its amino acid composition, SDS electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gel, electron microscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography. Good prospects of the use of RPV-expressed gene engineering HBsAg as the basis vaccines against hepatitis B was demonstrated in 10 experimental batches of vaccine. All batches of the preparation had pronounced immunogenicity and were safe and nontoxic in animal experiments. The ID50 of experimental batches did not exceed 211 ng/ml, which, according to the data of comparative experiments, was lower than, or equal to, corresponding values of analogous foreign commercial preparations, based on plasma or yeast HBsAg.
