Dichotic listening procedures have been used to assess cerebral lateralization in normal Ss. One particularly useful technique is the use of stimuli that fuse into a single percept. Although this procedure has many advantages over other dichotic listening methods, it is particularly susceptible to stimulus dominance, which acts as noise in a S's response data, thus reducing the power of any statistical test of the ear advantage. It is proposed that the solution to this problem is a log-linear analysis of the response data to yield a λ-type index (λ*) that is a measure of ear dominance independent of stimulus dominance. Details of the analysis are provided, as well as a sample analysis of data collected from 104 right-handed and 30 left-handed Ss. Comparisons are drawn between the log-linear analysis and other methods that have been proposed to control for stimulus dominance in this single-response dichotic fusion procedure. Throughout much of the parallel processing community there is the sense that writing software for distributed-memory parallel processors Is subject to a ‘no pain—no gain’ rule: that In order to reap the benefits of parallel computation one must first suffer the pain of converting the application to run on a parallel machine. We believe this Is the result of Inadequate programming tools and not a problem Inherent to parallel processing. We will show that one can parallelize real scientific applications and obtain good performance with little effort If the right tools are used. Our vehicle for this demonstration is a 6000-line DNA and protein sequence comparison application that we have implemented in Mental, an object-oriented parallel processing system for both parallel and distributed architectures. We briefly describe the application and present performance information for both the Mentat version and a hand-coded parallel version of the application.  相似文献

In the paper we present a framework for partitioning data parallel computations across a heterogeneous metasystem at runtime. The framework is guided by program and resource information which is made available to the system. Three difficult problems are handled by the framework: processor selection, task placement and heterogeneous data domain decomposition. Solving each of these problems contributes to reduced elapsed time. In particular, processor selection determines the best grain size at which to run the computation, task placement reduces communication cost, and data domain decomposition achieves processor load balance. We present results which indicate that excellent performance is achievable using the framework. The paper extends our earlier work on partitioning data parallel computations across a single-level network of heterogeneous workstations.  相似文献

An investigation is presented of nickel electrodeposition from acidic solutions in a cylindrical spouted electrochemical reactor. The effects of solution pH, temperature, and applied current on nickel removal/recovery rate, current efficiency, and corrosion rate of deposited nickel on the cathodic particles were explored under galvanostatic operation. Nitrogen sparging was used to decrease the dissolved oxygen concentration in the electrolyte in order to reduce the nickel corrosion rate, thereby increasing the nickel electrowinning rate and current efficiency. A numerical model of electrodeposition, including corrosion and mass transfer in the particulate cathode moving bed, is presented that describes the behavior of the experimental net nickel electrodeposition data quite well.  相似文献

Several theorists have proposed that the sex steroid testosterone acts on the fetal brain during a critical period of development to influence cerebral lateralization (N. Geschwind & A. M. Galaburda, 1987; M. Hines & C. Shipley, see PA, Vol 71:8996; S. F. Witelson, see PA, Vol 79:26441. In the present study. relations were examined between prenatal testosterone levels in 2nd trimester amniotic fluid and lateralization of speech, affect, and handedness at age 10. Girls with higher prenatal testosterone levels were more strongly right-handed and had stronger left-hemisphere speech representation. Boys with higher prenatal testosterone levels had stronger right-hemisphere specialization for the recognition of emotion. This pattern of results is most consistent with Witelson's (1991) claim that prenatal testosterone leads to greater lateralization of function. The advantages of using a beam of 3He++ extracted from conventional accelerator equipment for RBS analysis of CMT - related materials are described. Results obtained on an epilayer of HgTe grown on a CdTe substrate are compared with results of 4He+ beam RBS. The improved mass resolution combined with the lower energy loss rate of the 3He beam on penetration provides a much enhanced profiling depth both for Hg in the near-surface region and for diffusion effects at the interface. One benefit of a computational Grid is the ability to run high‐performance applications over distributed resources simply and securely. We demonstrated this benefit with an experiment in which we studied the protein‐folding process with the CHARMM molecular simulation package over a Grid managed by Legion, a Grid operating system. High‐performance applications can take advantage of Grid resources if the Grid operating system provides both low‐level functionality as well as high‐level services. We describe the nature of services provided by Legion for high‐performance applications. Our experiences indicate that human factors continue to play a crucial role in the configuration of Grid resources, underlying resources can be problematic, Grid services must tolerate underlying problems or inform the user, and high‐level services must continue to evolve to meet user requirements. Our experiment not only helped a scientist perform an important study, but also showed the viability of an integrated approach such as Legion's for managing a Grid.
