H5N1, highly pathogenic avian influenza, continues to pose a public health risk in the countries of southeast Asia where it has become endemic. However, in Thailand, which experienced two of the largest recorded epidemics in 2004–2005, the disease has been successfully reduced to very low levels. We fitted a spatio-temporal model of the spread of infection to outbreak data collected during the second wave of outbreaks to assess the extent to which different poultry types were responsible for propagating infection. Our estimates suggest that the wave of outbreaks would not have been possible without the contribution of backyard flocks to the susceptibility of a sub-district. However, we also estimated that outbreaks involving commercial poultry, a much larger sector in Thailand than in neighbouring countries, were disproportionately infectious, a factor which was also crucial in sustaining the wave. As a result, implemented measures that aim to reduce the role of commercial farms in the spread of infection, such as the drive to bring aspects of the supply chain ‘in house’, may help to explain the subsequent success in controlling H5N1 in Thailand. We also found that periods of active surveillance substantially improved the rate of outbreak detection.  相似文献

Four experiments with 1-wk-old veal calves were conducted to assess the influence of probiotics on growth and health indicators. In experiments 1 and 2, the liquid probiotic supplements were administered daily from experimental d 1 to 15. The treatment period in experiments 3 and 4 was extended to 56 d. The probiotics used were a multispecies probiotic (MSPB) containing different probiotic species of human origin, or a calf-specific probiotic (CSPB) containing 6 Lactobacillus species isolated from calf feces and selected on the basis of a combination of characteristics.When the data for the 4 experiments were pooled, the probiotics enhanced growth rate during the first 2 wk. During the 8-wk experimental period, average daily gain and feed efficiency were significantly improved in the probiotic-treated groups. The MSPB-induced increase in weight gain was greater when the control calves were considered less healthy based on a health score (an index of diarrhea and therapeutic treatments). Probiotic treatment tended to diminish mortality. The CSPB treatment reduced the incidence of diarrhea and the fecal counts of coliforms. When therapeutic treatment was intensive in the control calves, the ingestion of probiotics reduced the percentage of calves that required therapy and the amount of treatments needed against digestive or respiratory diseases. There was no clear difference in the efficiency of the MSPB and CSPB preparations. Further research is necessary to identify underlying mechanisms and to evaluate the potential of probiotics to improve respiratory health in veal calf production.  相似文献

Soil science is a relatively young and specialised field of science. This note discusses the use of the h index as a scientific output measure in soil science. We explore the governing factors of h index in soil science: the number of soil scientists, the number of papers published, the average number of citations, and the age of the scientist. We found the average relationship between h index and scientific age for soil science: h = 0.7 t. Recently developed methods for learning sparse classifiers are among the state-of-the-art in supervised learning. These methods learn classifiers that incorporate weighted sums of basis functions with sparsity-promoting priors encouraging the weight estimates to be either significantly large or exactly zero. From a learning-theoretic perspective, these methods control the capacity of the learned classifier by minimizing the number of basis functions used, resulting in better generalization. This paper presents three contributions related to learning sparse classifiers. First, we introduce a true multiclass formulation based on multinomial logistic regression. Second, by combining a bound optimization approach with a component-wise update procedure, we derive fast exact algorithms for learning sparse multiclass classifiers that scale favorably in both the number of training samples and the feature dimensionality, making them applicable even to large data sets in high-dimensional feature spaces. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first algorithms to perform exact multinomial logistic regression with a sparsity-promoting prior. Third, we show how nontrivial generalization bounds can be derived for our classifier in the binary case. Experimental results on standard benchmark data sets attest to the accuracy, sparsity, and efficiency of the proposed methods.  相似文献

Lactobacilli are Gram-positive and catalase negative rods commonly found in lactic acid fermented foods and in the gastrointestinal tract of mammals and birds. Few studies have described lactobacilli in freshwater fish. We analysed the presence of lactobacilli in the intestines of young and adult freshwater fish inhabiting a river environment and from fish reared in an aquaculture unit with a water recirculation system. Various species of lactobacilli were present in relatively high number in the intestines of edible fresh water fish from the river, especially in the warm season but in low numbers in the cold season. Lactobacilli were scarcely found in the intestines of edible farmed fish reared in a recirculation system in warm water. Lactobacilli are reported for the first time from the intestines of wild European eel, perch, rudd, ruffe, bleak, silver bream, chub, somnul and farmed African catfish. The two first fishes, and the last one are highly valuable species for fisheries and aquaculture. Additionally, improved methods for storage and bacteriological analysis of fish intestinal content are described. The natural presence of lactic acid bacteria in fish may be of great interest in producing fermented fish products worldwide.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Seven groups of rats were fed during 1 mo using 1 infant formula containing Bifidobacterium bifidum and Bifidobacterium longum, 3 infant formulas containing 4‐galactosyllactose at 1.2%, 5.0%, and 10.0%, and 3 infant formulas containing both ingredients. During 3 periods, corresponding to day 8 to 10, 18 to 20, and 28 to 30, fecal samples were collected for total aerobes, total anaerobes, and bifidobacteria counts. Results showed that bifidobacteria represented an important proportion out of the anaerobe group in the 1st period. However, in the 2nd period bifidobacteria decreased significantly, and in the 3rd period bifidobacteria counts increased, especially in the group fed diet containing galactooligosaccharides 1.2%. In a 2nd study, 12 human infants were fed with the infant formula containing B. bifidum and B. longum, whereas the other 12 were fed using a control infant formula. Fecal samples were collected at the age of 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 12 mo for total anaerobes, bacteroides, bifidobacteria, clostridia counts, as well as for fecal pH determination. Infants fed infant formula containing bifidobacteria in samples corresponding to 7th and 9th mo of age had significantly (P< 0.05) higher bifidobacteria counts and a lower fecal pH than those fed control infant formula.  相似文献

Incidence of Listeria species in seafood and seafood salads   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A total of 128 samples of seafood on the Icelandic market were tested for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes and other Listeria species. The samples included raw, smoked and dried fish, frozen shellfish and shrimps as well as several fish salads. These products are generally consumed without heating. Listeria spp. were present in 56% of the samples of raw fish, 29% of the smoked fish, 9% of the shrimps and 32% of the salads. No Listeria spp. were present in the shellfish or dried fish. In 46% of the positive samples L. monocytogenes could be demonstrated, either alone or together with L. innocua. The other positive samples contained L. innocua and, in one sample, L. welshimeri. All products sampled had been processed and packed in Iceland, mostly for use on the domestic market. It is suggested that consuming certain fish products and fish salads may form an additional risk factor for listeriosis in humans.  相似文献

A parametric study of laser output versus CF4 pressure and temperature was performed and correlated with a model for the gain in the system, which includes the relevant relaxation processes. Lasing in CF4 was observed at temperatures below 170 K. Cooling the CF4 gas, the output power of the laser increased from 3 mW at 142 K to 5 mW at 113 K, when 4% of the radiation was coupled out. Chopping the pump, the 16-μm signal consisted of a peak decaying in approximately 2 ms, superimposed on a CW background. This decay is caused by the slow relaxation in the CF4 laser, resulting in filling of the lower laser level. For the CW CF4 laser, vibrational relaxation from the laser lower level is even slower than diffusion to the cold cell walls. To increase the relaxation rate, HD was added. In this molecule, the J=1→3 rotational transition at 447 cm-1 is almost resonant with the ν2 vibration in CF4. Maximum CW output was increased by 25% in a mixture containing 10% HD. A Bayesian approach to joint feature selection and classifier design   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
This paper adopts a Bayesian approach to simultaneously learn both an optimal nonlinear classifier and a subset of predictor variables (or features) that are most relevant to the classification task. The approach uses heavy-tailed priors to promote sparsity in the utilization of both basis functions and features; these priors act as regularizers for the likelihood function that rewards good classification on the training data. We derive an expectation- maximization (EM) algorithm to efficiently compute a maximum a posteriori (MAP) point estimate of the various parameters. The algorithm is an extension of recent state-of-the-art sparse Bayesian classifiers, which in turn can be seen as Bayesian counterparts of support vector machines. Experimental comparisons using kernel classifiers demonstrate both parsimonious feature selection and excellent classification accuracy on a range of synthetic and benchmark data sets.  相似文献
