A technique is described for making dielectric spectroscopy measurements of very small quantities (<1 /spl mu/l) of oil. The technique utilises surface tension to hold the oil between the plates of a capacitor, the inter-electrode distance being controlled by a micrometer. Breakdown strength can also be estimated using this technique. Three samples of silicone oil, used in cable sealing ends, were tested: virgin, used and failed. A major component in the frequency dependent impedance had the form Z(/spl omega/) = B(1-b(i/spl omega/)/sup 1-p/). This component was interpreted in terms of a fractal percolation model, and the anomalous thickness dependence predicted by the model verified by varying the inter-electrode distance. The difference observed for the three different samples indicate that conducting contaminants are responsible for the percolation system.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To study the influence of continuous administration of heparin on platelet function in intensive care patients. DESIGN: Prospective, serial investigation. SETTING: Clinical investigation on a surgical and neurosurgical intensive care unit in a university hospital. PATIENTS: The study included 45 patients: 15 postoperative with patients sepsis (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score between 15 and 25), 15 trauma patients (Injury Severity Score 15 to 25), and 15 neurosurgical patients. INTERVENTIONS: Management of the patients was carried out according to the guidelines for modern intensive care therapy. Sepsis and trauma patients received standard (unfractionated) heparin continuously [aim: an activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) approximately 2.0 times normal value; sepsis-heparin and trauma-heparin patients], whereas neurosurgical patients received no heparin (neurosurgical patients). MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: From arterial blood samples, platelet aggregation was measured by the turbidimetric method. Platelet aggregation was induced by adenosine diphosphate (ADP; 2.0 mumol/l), collagen (10 micrograms/ml), and epinephrine (25 mumol/l). Measurements were carried out on the day of diagnosis of sepsis or 12 h after hemodynamic stabilization (trauma and neurosurgery patients) (baseline) and during the next 5 days at 12.00 noon. Standard coagulation parameters [platelet count and fibrinogen and antithrombin III (AT III) plasma concentrations] were also monitored. Heparin 4-10 U/kg per h (mean dose: approximately 500 U/h) was necessary to reach an aPTT of about 2.0 times normal. Platelet count was highest in the neurosurgical patients, but it did not decrease after heparin administration to the trauma and sepsis patients. AT III and fibrinogen plasma levels were similar in the three groups of patients. In the sepsis group, platelet aggregation variables decreased significantly (e.g., epinephrine-induced maximum platelet aggregation:-45 relative % from baseline value). Platelet function recovered during the study and even exceeded baseline values (e.g., ADP-induced maximum platelet aggregation: +42.5 relative % from baseline value). Continuous heparinization did not blunt this increase of platelet aggregation variables. In the heparinized trauma patients, platelet aggregation variables remained almost stable and were no different to platelet aggregation data in the untreated neurosurgical patients. CONCLUSIONS: Continuous administration of heparin with an average dose of approximately 500 U/h did not negatively influence platelet function in the trauma patients. Recovery from reduced platelet function in the sepsis group was not affected by continuous heparinization. Thus, continuous heparinization with this dose appears to be safe with regard to platelet function in the intensive care patient.  相似文献

A new type of low-profile applicator is described giving efficient power transfer to tissue with low leakage. It consists of a resonant element spaced from a ground plane by low-loss material having high relative permittivity and some relative permeability. This combination is covered by similar material which can be placed in direct contact with the tissue to be heated, or separated from it by a water bolus as required. Laboratory measurements using phantom materials show that these applicators are well matched and produce well defined and relatively uniform heating profiles. Applicators having maximum dimensions of 3-15 cm covering the frequency range 1000-100 MHz, respectively, are described. Penetration depths of at least 4 cm at 100-200 MHz are achieved. Tests on anesthetised pigs and some clinical assessment have confirmed the usefulness of this compact low-frequency type of applicator and have shown that performance compares favorably with that of other recently reported types. The design can be optimized for treatment of specific sites, and suitable choice of dimensions and electrical characteristics of the layer material allow the low-profile concept to be extended over a wide range of operating frequencies.  相似文献

Some beta-lactam antibiotics are active in vitro against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. There are anecdotal reports of successful treatment of tuberculosis caused by multiple-drug-resistant strains of M. tuberculosis with regimens that included amoxicillin/clavulanate. Reduction of M. tuberculosis in the sputum of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis during administration of amoxicillin/clavulanate was measured by a quantitative culture method to determine the activity in vivo. Patients were randomized to receive isoniazid, ofloxacin, or amoxicillin/clavulanate for 7 days. Isoniazid was the most effective agent, reducing M. tuberculosis after 2 days at a mean rate (+/- standard deviation) of 0.60 +/- 0.30 log10 cfu/mL per day, compared with 0.32 +/- 0.05 and 0.34 +/- 0.03 for ofloxacin and amoxicillin/clavulanate, respectively. The early bactericidal activity of amoxicillin/clavulanate was comparable to that reported for antituberculous agents other than isoniazid. Further studies of beta-lactam antibiotics with in vitro activity against M. tuberculosis are warranted to define their role in treatment of tuberculosis.  相似文献

Linear low and high density polyethylene sheets were compression molded and crystallized at a 5–10°C/min cooling rate. Parts of the sheets were annealed at different temperatures up to 2°C below the melting temperature. The small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and the wide angle X‐ray scattering intensities of the annealed samples were studied. SAXS intensities showed particle scattering with a bimodal size distribution. The estimated radii of gyration were 15–17 nm and 5–7 nm, respectively. The crystallinity and the radius of gyration increased slightly with increasing annealing temperature for some samples; others did not show any change. No peaks characteristic of intercorrelated lamellar crystallinity in the SAXS intensities developed during the annealing. The original broad peak of high density polyethylene disappeared from the SAXS recordings on annealing. The length of the perfect chain versus melting temperature was calculated by the Thomson‐Gibbs formula and Flory's concept of melting temperature depression where methyl groups and tertiary carbon atoms at the branches were regarded as second components (solvent). Linear relationships were found for both cases. Experimental data for a linear low density polyethylene obtained from the literature were in between the two functions. Pig skin was irradiated using 90Sr/90Y plaques and the dose-related incidence of induced moist desquamation was determined. The repair of radiation-induced sublethal damage (SLD) was studied by fitting these response data to the generalized LQ equation for incomplete repair using quasilikelihood methods with binomial statistics, and either a Poisson or logistic link to relate the probability of response to the covariates. A Poisson response analysis based on the assumption that SLD was governed by two repair processes gave estimated repair half-times of 0.20 [(95% confidence limits) 0.12, 0.34] and 6.6 [4.3, 10.0] h. The estimates of the short and long repair half-times were significantly different, although there was no significant difference between the results using the Poisson and logistic modes of analyses. The partition coefficient for the longer repair process was 0.5 [0.34, 0.71] indicating that about 33% of SLD-derived lethal damage is associated with the longer repair process in the case of 'complete repair' protocols. However, this proportionation is, in general, protocol dependent for incomplete repair protocols. A chi2 test on the residual deviance showed that the assumption of two repair processes for SLD gave a superior fit to the data than a single repair process at a significance level >99%. The radiation dose to the assumed target cell population depends upon their depth from the skin surface, due to the relatively short range of the electron emission from the 90Sr/90Y plaques. However, further modelling analyses have shown that the estimated repair half-times were independent of the assumed target cell distribution in the skin. This is in contrast with the alpha/beta ratio, where different (clinically significant) estimates can be obtained depending upon the assumed target cell distribution. If the target cells were at 16 micrometer depth from the surface of the skin, the estimated value for the alpha/beta ratio using the biphasic repair model would be 4.6[3.6, 5.6] Gy(Poisson analysis). PURPOSE: The morphologic responses of the pig and monkey kidney to fractionated fast-neutron irradiation were assessed. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The right kidney of approximately 14-week-old female Large White pigs was irradiated with 6.6-12.2 Gy of fast neutrons (42 MeVd-->Be) given as 12 fractions over 18 days; the left kidney served as the contralateral unirradiated kidney. Both kidneys were removed at necropsy 2 years postirradiation. In addition, the remaining hypertrophied kidney of four unilaterally nephrectomized adult rhesus monkeys was irradiated with a total dose of 11.0 Gy fast neutrons (45 MeVp-->Be) given in an identical fractionation regimen to that used in the pig studies. These kidneys were removed when the animals exhibited renal failure, between 32-94 weeks postirradiation. Glomeruli were assessed for the presence of pathologic features, including intercapillary eosinophilic material (ICE), ectatic capillaries, thrombi, hemorrhage, and sclerosis. The relative proportion of renal cortex occupied by glomeruli, interstitium, normal, or abnormal tubules was determined using a Chalkley point grid. RESULTS: The incidence of normal glomeruli, ectatic capillaries, thrombosis, and periglomerular fibrosis were significantly different in the irradiated pig kidneys compared with the unirradiated contralateral kidneys (p < or = 0.02). Linear regression analysis demonstrated a significant dose relationship in terms of normal glomeruli, ectatic capillaries, and ICE (r > or = 0.64; p < or = 0.04). Irradiation was also associated with a significant (p < 0.0001) decrease and increase in the volume of renal cortex occupied by normal and abnormal tubules, respectively. Similar morphometric changes were noted in the irradiated monkey kidneys. CONCLUSIONS: The morphologic changes seen in the pig and monkey kidney after fractionated irradiation with fast neutrons are similar to those previously noted after single-dose or fractionated-photon irradiation. These findings support the hypothesis that the development of radiation nephropathy in these various models involves common pathophysiological mechanisms.  相似文献
