A stochastic control scheme is developed for scalar, discrete-time, and linear-dynamic systems driven by Cauchy distributed process and measurement noises. When addressing the optimal control problem for such systems, the standard quadratic cost criteria cannot be used. In this study we introduce a new objective function that is functionally similar to the Cauchy probability density function. The performance index, defined as the expectation of this objective function with respect to the Cauchy densities, exists. The dynamic programming solution to the fixed and finite horizon optimal control problem that uses this performance index appears to be intractable. Therefore, a moving horizon optimal model predictive control problem is implemented, for which the conditional expected value of the objective function and its gradients can be computed in closed   form and without assumptions such as certainty equivalence. Numerical results are shown for this mm-step model predictive optimal controller and compared to a similar, Linear-Exponential-Gaussian model predictive controller. An essential difference between the Cauchy and Gaussian controllers when applied to a system with Cauchy noises is that, while the Gaussian controller is linear and reacts strongly to all noise pulses, the Cauchy controller can differentiate between measurement and process noise pulses by ignoring the former while responding to the latter. This property of the Cauchy controller occurs when an impulsive measurement noise is more likely than an impulsive process noise. The Cauchy and Gaussian controllers react similarly when applied to a system with Gaussian noises, demonstrating the robustness of the proposed control scheme.  相似文献

Cryptosporidium parvum is considered one of the most common enteropathogens, responsible for the high incidence of diarrhea and deleterious implications on immunity and health in neonatal calves. The pomegranate is well known for its health-promoting properties. Two experiments were designed to test the antiparasitical and antidiarrheal effects of concentrated pomegranate extract (CPE) supplement in milk in neonatal Holstein calves. Forty-one calves were randomly divided into control (n = 20) and treatment (n = 21) groups. For the first experiment, the treatment group was supplemented with 3.75% CPE in the daily milk ration, between 3 and 14 d of age, whereas the control group received only milk. Fecal samples were collected between d 5 and 13 to quantify Cryptosporidium oocysts, and the duration and intensity of diarrhea were evaluated. Reduced fecal oocyst count and diarrhea intensity and duration were revealed in the 3.75% CPE calves. No difference was noted in average daily gain between groups. In a second experiment, which was designed to test the effect of a lower CPE concentration (0.6% of daily milk allocation), no effects on fecal oocyst count and average daily gain were observed. However, compared with control, the lower CPE group was characterized by a shorter duration of diarrhea and higher weight gain among males at 14 d of age. These results suggest that the CPE supplement-to-calf milk ratio may potentially alleviate intestinal morbidity caused by Cryptosporidium.  相似文献

This study extended the work of S. Siddiqui, R. F. West, and K. E. Stanovich (1998), who studied the link between general print exposure and syllogistic reasoning. It was hypothesized that exposure to certain text structures that contain well-delineated logical forms, such as popularized scientific texts, would be a better predictor of deductive reasoning skill than general print exposure, which is not sensitive to the quality of an individual's reading activity. Furthermore, it was predicted that the ability to generate explanatory bridging inferences while reading would also be predictive of syllogistic reasoning. Undergraduate students (N = 112) were tested for vocabulary, nonverbal cognitive ability, exposure to general print, exposure to popularized scientific literature, and the ability to comprehend texts distinguished by the number of inferences that must be generated to support comprehension. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses showed that a combined measure of exposure to general and scientific literature was a significant predictor of syllogistic reasoning ability. Additionally, the ability to comprehend high-inference-load texts was related to solving syllogisms that were inconsistent with world knowledge, indicating an overlap in deductive reasoning skill and text comprehension processes. The role of secondary compounds (SC) in deterring herbivores and pathogens from vegetative parts of plants is well established, whereas their role in plant reproductive organs such as floral nectar is unclear. The present study aimed to reveal the response of free-flying honeybees to naturally occurring concentrations of four SC in floral nectar. We selected nicotine, anabasine, caffeine, and amygdalin, all of which are found in nectar of various plants. In repeated paired-choice experiments, we offered 20% sucrose solution as control along with test solutions of 20% sucrose with various concentrations of the above SC. Except for anabasine, naturally occurring concentrations of SC did not have a deterring effect. Furthermore, low concentrations of nicotine and caffeine elicited a significant feeding preference. SC can, therefore, be regarded as postingestive stimulants to pollinators, indicating that the psychoactive alkaloids in nectar may be a part of their mutualistic reward. Further studies are needed to test our hypothesis that psychoactive alkaloids in nectar impose dependence or addiction effects on pollinators.  相似文献

The discovery of natural RNA sensors that respond to a change in the environment by a conformational switch can be utilized for various biotechnological and nanobiotechnological advances. One class of RNA sensors is the riboswitch: an RNA genetic control element that is capable of sensing small molecules, responding to a deviation in ligand concentration with a structural change. Riboswitches are modularly built from smaller components. Computational methods can potentially be utilized in assembling these building block components and offering improvements in the biochemical design process. We describe a computational procedure to design RNA switches from building blocks with favorable properties. To achieve maximal throughput for genetic control purposes, future designer RNA switches can be assembled based on a computerized preprocessing buildup of the constituent domains, namely the aptamer and the expression platform in the case of a synthetic riboswitch. Conformational switching is enabled by the RNA versatility to possess two highly stable states that are energetically close to each other but topologically distinct, separated by an energy barrier between them. Initially, computer simulations can produce a list of short sequences that switch between two conformers when trigerred by point mutations or temperature. The short sequences should possess an additional desirable property; when these selected small RNA switch segments are attached to various aptamers, the ligand binding mechanism should replace the aforementioned event triggers, which will no longer be effective for crossing the energy barrier. In the assembled RNA sequence, energy minimization folding predictions should then show no difference between the folded structure of the entire sequence relative to the folded structure of each of its constituents. Moreover, energy minimization methods applied on the entire sequence could aid at this preprocessing stage by exhibiting high mutational robustness to capture the stability of the formed hairpin in the expression platform. The above computer-assisted assembly procedure together with application specific considerations may further be tailored for therapeutic gene regulation. The function of energy is becoming increasingly vital in meeting the requirements of modern societies and sustaining rapid economic and industrial growth globally. Heat transfer equipment has been employed for heat recovery and conversion in various domestic and industrial applications. Therefore, due to the recent global energy crisis, boosting the thermal efficiency of energy systems has become an essential requirement, which would reduce both their size and rates of energy demand. There are active and passive methods for boosting heat transfer rates. As they have no moving components, passive methods are more affordable and dependable than active ones. Applying two or more passive techniques concurrently will result in a higher heat transmission rate than any approach working independently. The current article comprehensively reviews experimental and computational investigations of passive compound forced convection heat transfer augmentation techniques at laminar, transition, and turbulent flow regimes. This article focuses on compound techniques arrangement in the form of turbulators, typical twisted tapes (TTs), surface roughness, vortex generators, and so on. The pioneering research suggests that using a lower twist ratio, lower pitch, and smaller winglet angles in TTs can result in higher heat transfer rates, albeit with a slightly increased friction factor. The combination of alternate-axes and wings in TTs leads to more effective heat transfer enhancement within the tube.  相似文献

Active self-assembly processes exploit an energy source to accelerate the movement of building blocks and intermediate structures and modify their interactions. A model system is the assembly of biotinylated microtubules partially coated with streptavidin into linear bundles as they glide on a surface coated with kinesin motor proteins. By tuning the assembly conditions, microtubule bundles with near millimeter length are created, demonstrating that active self-assembly is beneficial if components are too large for diffusive self-assembly but too small for robotic assembly.  相似文献

We present an algorithm for real-time, robust, vision-based active tracking and pursuit. The algorithm was designed to overcome problems arising from active vision-based pursuit, such as target occlusion. Our method employs two layers to deal with occlusions of different lengths. The first layer is for short- or medium-term occlusions: those where a known method—such as mean shift combined with a Kalman filter—fails. For this layer we designed the hybrid filter for active pursuit (HAP). HAP utilizes a Kalman filter modified to respond to two different modes of action: one in which the target is positively identified and one in which the target identification is uncertain. For long-term occlusions we use the second layer. This layer is a decision algorithm that follows a learning procedure and is based on game theory-related reinforcement (Cesa-Bianchi and Lugosi, Prediction Learning and Games, 2006). The learning process is based on trial and error and is designed to perform adequately with a small number of samples. The algorithm produces a data structure that can be shared among agents or sent to a central control of a multi-agent system. The learning process is designed so that agents perform tasks according to their skills: an efficient agent will pursue targets while an inefficient agent will search for entering targets. These capacities make this system well suited for embedding in a multi-agent control system.  相似文献
