We propose a method for concept-based medical image retrieval that is a superset of existing semantic-based image retrieval methods. We conceive of a concept as an incremental and interactive formalization of the user's conception of an object in an image. The premise is that such a concept is closely related to a user's specific preferences and subjectivity and, thus, allows to deal with the complexity and content-dependency of medical image content. We describe an object in terms of multiple continuous boundary features and represent an object concept by the stochastic characteristics of an object population. A population-based incrementally learning technique, in combination with relevance feedback, is then used for concept customization. The user determines the speed and direction of concept customization using a single parameter that defines the degree of exploration and exploitation of the search space. Images are retrieved from a database in a limited number of steps based upon the customized concept. To demonstrate our method we have performed concept-based image retrieval on a database of 292 digitized X-ray images of cervical vertebrae with a variety of abnormalities. The results show that our method produces precise and accurate results when doing a direct search. In an open-ended search our method efficiently and effectively explores the search space.  相似文献

A new method for designing signals with a given time-bandwidth product, such that all the signals in the set have a flat amplitude spectrum and have low cross-correlation function values is introduced. It is shown that these signals lie on a signal parameter space ellipse. For a given duration and bandwidth, it is possible to trade off the cardinality of the set for better cross-correlation properties between remaining members of the set. Proof that the cross-correlation between these signals is bounded from above by a factor proportional to the square-root of inverse distance between these signals along one of the axes of the ellipse is given. It is also shown that the cross-correlation between two signals that are furthest apart is bounded by the square-root of inverse time-bandwidth product of the signals in the set. An example design is then given and a comparison of this signal set to some well-known signal sets illustrates that it performs better when the metric is maximum cross-correlation value. The proposed signal set also has the advantage that it can be designed for any time-bandwidth product instead of discrete values  相似文献

The quantitative capability of pulsed Doppler ultrasound in clinical practice is limited by the effects of frequency-dependent attenuation of ultrasound in tissue, as well as several other spectral-broadening mechanisms which distort the Doppler spectrum of an ultrasonic echo. In this communication, we present results of in vitro experiments which demonstrate the magnitude of the errors expected in clinical measurements of blood flow parameters when frequency-dependent attenuation Of ultrasound in biological tissue is ignored. It is shown that errors as large as 15 percent may occur in Doppler measurements of blood flow velocity through 7 cm of intervening tissue. A comparison is also made between experimental results and a theoretical model which includes the effects of scattering and attenuation.  相似文献

The phospholipid composition of platelets from dogs on various experimental diets was determined. Thyroidectomized foxhounds were fed a control diet or the control diet supplemented with (1) beef tallow, (2) beef tallow and cholesterol, or (3) beef tallow, cholesterol, and safflower oil for 23 weeks prior to isolation of platelets. Platelets from animals fed the control diet contained 36.7% phosphatidylcholine (PC), 22.8% phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), 18.4% sphingomyelin (Sph), 11.8% phosphatidylserine (PS), 6.3% phosphatidylinositol (PI), and 2.2% lysophosphatidylcholine. The PE was 77.6% in the plasmalogen form. No highly significant changes in the phospholipid class composition resulted from the experimental diets. Cholesterol supplementation of the diets, however, caused consistent alterations in the fatty acid compositions of the platelet phospholipids including increases in the percentages of 18∶1ω9 (oleic acid), 18∶2ω6 (linoleic acid), and 20∶3ω6 (homo-gamma linolenic acid) and a decrease in the percentage of 20∶4ω6 (arachidonic acid). Addition of safflower oil to the tallow-cholesterol diet partially reversed these effects. These cholesterol-induced alterations in fatty acid composition could be due to exchange with plasma lipids, de novo synthesis, or altered platelet metabolism. The mechanism remains to be determined. The effectiveness of thermal analysis as a technique for screening polymeric candidates for high temperature composite application is described. DSC, DMA, and TGA were employed to measure glass transition temperature, characterize blend phase morphology, and assess thermo-oxidative stability. The materials studied were polybenzimidazole (PBI), polyimide copolymer (6FCoPI), and blends of PBI with Ultem 1000? and 6FCoPI. The potential of misinterpretation of thermal analysis as the primary screening tool was also demonstrated. It was shown that if thermal analysis was used with insufficient understanding of the chemistry and physics of the materials under investigation, highly misleading conclusions may be derived.  相似文献

Five candidate pheromone components were identified by analyzing pheromone gland extracts by gas chromatography (GC), coupled GC-electroantennographic detection (EAD), and coupled GC-mass spectrometry (MS): (E)-11-hexadecenol(E11–16 : OH), (Z)-11-hexadecenol (Z11–16 : OH),(E)-11-hexadecenal, (E)-11-hexadecenyl acetate, and (Z)-3,(Z)-6,(Z)-9-tricosatriene (Z3,Z6,Z9–23 : Hy). In electroantennogram (EAG) recordings, synthetic E11–16 : OH elicited stronger antennal responses at low doses than other candidate pheromone components. Field tests demonstrated that synthetic E11–16 : OH as a trap bait was effective in attracting males, whereas addition of Z11–16 : OH inhibited the males' response. Z3,Z6,Z9–23 : Hy strongly enhanced attractiveness of E11–16 : OH, but was not attractive by itself. A pheromone blend with synergistic behavioral activity of an alcohol (E11–16 : OH) and hydrocarbon (Z3,Z6,Z9–23 : Hy) component is most unusual in the Lepidoptera. The synthetic two-component pheromone is approximately 60 times more attractive than the female-produced blend and might facilitate the control of this pest.  相似文献

Natural polysaccharides like chitosan and dextran have garnered considerable interest in biomedical applications due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and nontoxicity. Nonetheless, the development of a reproducible class of medical devices from these materials is challenging and has had limited success. Chitosan and dextran are inherently variable and synthesis using these materials is prone to inconsistencies. In this study, we put forward a robust product development regimen that allows these natural materials to be developed into a reproducible class of biomaterials. First, an array of validated characterization methods (Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, titrations, Ultraviolet spectroscopy, Size Exclusion Chromatography—Multi-Angle Light Scattering, Size Exclusion Chromatography—Refractive Index, and proprietary methods) were developed that allowed rigorous specifications to be set for unprocessed chitosan and dextran, chitosan and dextran intermediates, and chemically modified materials—acrylated chitosan (aCHN) and oxidized dextran (oDEX). Second, a robust and reproducible synthesis scheme involving various in-process controls was developed to chemically modify the unprocessed polysaccharides. Third, purification methods to remove byproducts and low-molecular-weight impurities for both aCHN and oDEX were developed. The study presents a viable strategy for converting variable, natural materials into a reproducible class of biomaterials that can be applied in various biomedical applications. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Severe splenomegaly and anemia developed in a 5-year-old girl with diffuse lymphangiomatosis of the upper part of the body. Radioisotope scanning and celiac angiography demonstrated lymphangiomatosis of the spleen, a rare but diagnosable condition.
