Beliefs about human nature, adult education, adult learners, and moral commitment are at the heart of the educator-learner agreement. In continuing nursing education, it is the point where professional values, morals, and ethical principles meet. Using Husteds' bioethical decision-making model, the values, beliefs, and actions within the educator-learning agreement are identified and organized by the bioethical standards. By relating the bioethical standards to practice, continuing nurse educators can find their own basis for practice and work toward attaining a consistent professional ethical orientation.     

Monte-carlo modeling of grain growth in Zr equal channel angular pressed and recrystallized

Grain boundary character distribution in equal-channel-angular pressed Zr was studied. Using a die design of 90°/20° and an operation temperature of 350°C. The initial grain size of 20 μm was reduced to about 270 nm with 4 passes via route B_c. The grain growth kinetics of the recrystallized state was obtained by experiment and Monte-Carlo computer simulation, respectively, which showed good agreement. Based on kinetics and morphological characteristics, it was concluded that the grain coarsening mechanism was governed by normal grain growth. No sign of abnormal grain growth was detected either in the experiment or in simulation despite taking into consideration anisotropy in grain boundary energy as well as its mobility. This indicates that grain boundaries produced by severely deformed Zr are stable against explosive coarsening. The evolution characteristics of the microstructure in the present ECA pressed and recrystallized Zr differed from those of cold rolled Ti in that the grain boundary misorientation distribution and texture were rather stable during grain growth. Effect of an hourglass-shaped sleeve on the performance of the fluid dynamic bearings of a HDD spindle motor

This research investigated the characteristics of fluid dynamic bearings (FDBs) in a HDD spindle motor with an hourglass-shaped sleeve. We demonstrated experimentally that the hourglass-shaped sleeve generated through the ball-sizing process is a major source of large repeatable runout and non-repeatable runout in a HDD spindle system. We also numerically proved the effect of hourglass-shaped sleeves on pressure, friction torque, stiffness and damping coefficients, critical mass, and shock response. Finally, we proposed a robust design for FDBs with hourglass-shaped groove depths to compensate for the decrease in the static and dynamic performance of FDBs with hourglass-shaped sleeves. The proposed hourglass-shaped groove depth improves the performance of FDBs with both straight and hourglass-shaped sleeves.     

Preparation of nanosize Pt clusters using ion exchange of Pt(NH3) 4 2+ inside mesoporous channel of MCM-41

Mesoporous molecular sieve MCM-41 with a Si/Al ratio of 35 was obtained by hydrothermal synthesis using a gel mixture with a molar composition of 6 SiO₂0.1 Al₂O₃1 hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride 0.25 dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide 0.25 tetrapropylammonium bromide0.15 (NH₄)₂O1.5 Na₂O300 H₂O. The MCM-41 sample was calcined in O₂ flow at 813 K and subsequently ion exchanged with Ca²⁺. A small Pt cluster has been supported on the MCM-41 sample following a procedure using ion exchange of Pt(NH₃) ₄ ²⁺ . The Pt(NH₃) ₄ ²⁺ ion supported on MCM-41 has been activated in O₂ flow at 593 K and subsequently reduced with Fh flow at 573 K, in the same way used for the preparation of a Pt cluster entrapped inside the supercage of zeolite NaY. The resulting Pt cluster supported on the MCM-41 shows hydrogen chemisorption oftotal two H atoms per Pt at 296 K (based on the total amount of Pt) and high catalytic activity for hydrogenolysis of ethane. The chemical shift in¹²⁹Xe NMR spectroscopy of adsorbed xenon indicates that the Pt cluster is located inside the mesoporous molecular sieve.     

Immobilization of a cyclodextrin glucanotransferase (CGTase) onto polyethylene film with a carboxylic acid group and production of cyclodextrins from corn starch using CGTase‐immobilized PE film

Carboxylic acid groups were introduced onto polyethylene (PE) film by radiation‐induced graft copolymerization. Subsequently, the clodextrin glucanotransferase (CGTase) was immobilized on the PE film with a carboxylic acid group. The activity of the immobilized CGTase on PE film was in the range of 0.40–1.04 U/cm² per min. The production of cyclodextrins (CDs) from corn starch was examined using the CGTase‐immobilized PE film. The production ratios of CDs using CGTase‐immobilized PE film was in the following order: α–CD > β–CD > γ–CD. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 85: 2451–2457, 2002     

Characterization of bimetallic NaY-supported Pt-Pd catalyst by EXAFS,TEM and TPR

NaY-supported bimetallic Pt-Pd catalysts have been studied by TEM, TPR and EXAFS. Small, randomly mixed particles are formed in the zeolite cages. When the Pt content is increased, a Pt core structure appears and the dispersion increases. Particle diameters are about 1–2 nm for bimetallic samples.     

Personal driving diary: Automated recognition of driving events from first-person videos

In this paper, we introduce the concept of personal driving diary. A personal driving diary is a multimedia archive of a person’s daily driving experience, describing important driving events of the user with annotated videos. This paper presents an automated system that constructs such multimedia diary by analyzing videos obtained from a vehicle-mounted camera. The proposed system recognizes important interactions between the driving vehicle and the other actors in videos (e.g., accident, overtaking, etc.), and labels them together with its contextual knowledge on the vehicle (e.g., mean velocity) to construct an event log. A decision tree based activity recognizer is designed, detecting driving events of vehicles and pedestrians from the first-person view videos by analyzing their trajectories and spatio-temporal relationships. The constructed diary enables efficient searching and event-based browsing of video clips, which helps the users when retrieving videos of dangerous situations. Our experiment confirms that the proposed system reliably generates driving diaries by annotating the vehicle events learned from training examples.     

Green practices-IS alignment and environmental performance: The mediating effects of coordination

The problem of environmental sustainability has been growing in recent years with an interest from both researchers and practitioners. A major gap that exists is the absence of empirical studies that addressed business value of green IS (information systems). Thus, drawing on the resource-based view of the firm and IT (information technology) business value literature, this study aims to develop a comprehensive research model of green practice-IS alignment, the key cross-functional coordination of green practices with manufacturing and marketing functions, and firm performance. The study provides a better understanding of the relationship between green practice-manufacturing coordination and green practice-marketing coordination, and how both variables mediated the relationship between green practices-IS alignment and environmental performance. The data used in this study were collected from manufacturing firms. The results show that a firm’s green practices-IS alignment had a positive effect on both green practices-manufacturing coordination and green practices-marketing coordination. In turn, both green practices-manufacturing coordination and green practices-marketing coordination are the significant predictors of environmental performance. Meanwhile, green practices-IS alignment had an indirect effect on environmental performance via both green practices-manufacturing coordination and green practices-marketing coordination. Moreover, the findings of this study show that environmental performance is an important predictor of economic performance.     

Mucoadhesive Phenolic Pectin Hydrogels for Saliva Substitute and Oral Patch

Oral disease is one of the most common conditions worldwide, negatively affecting general health, reducing the quality of life, and often developing into systemic illness. However, the design of therapeutic agents for oral diseases is challenging due to various unique features of the oral cavity, including its wet and dynamic environment and curved shape. Herein, the development of highly biocompatible mucoadhesive functional hydrogels for oral applications is reported, generated by introducing bio-inspired phenolic moieties into a pectin polymer. Pyrogallol-functionalized pectin (Pec-PG) can be crosslinked in situ via autoxidation without chemical agents and readily fabricated as various formulations. Sprayable Pec-PG hydrogel exhibits strong mucoadhesion and outstanding hydration ability ex vivo and in vivo, thus displaying significant potential as a novel saliva substitute for dry mouth. The authors further show that topical application of mucoadhesive Pec-PG patches pre-loaded with corticosteroid significantly promotes the repair of diabetic oral ulcer tissue via prolonged drug release, free radical scavenging, and physical barrier effects. Moreover, similar applications for oral ulcer treatment using a pectin hydrogel modified with catechol (Pec-CA), another phenolic moiety are demonstrated. Together, these findings suggest that mucoadhesive phenolic pectin derivatives can provide highly biocompatible, convenient, and effective hydrogel platforms for treating oral diseases.
