Corynebacterium vaginale (Haemophilus vaginalis) in women with leukorrhea

Corynebacterium vaginale was recovered from vaginal-cervical swab specimens in 164 of 288 women with leukorrhea and in four of 30 women without signs or symptoms of lower genital tract infection. The amount and character of the leukorrhea observed in association with C. vaginale infection were variable; in typical cases the discharge had the appearance of a thin paste. In a series of 100 patients studied to determine the apparent causes of leukorrhea, noninfectious causes were inferred in seven patients and no cause ascertained in six. Candida or other yeasts, C. vaginale, and Trichomonas vaginalis were identified alone or in combination in 87 patients; 53 had yeasts, 35 had C. vaginale, and 15 had T. vaginalis.     

Desegregation and the intellectual performance of the Negro: Comment.

I should like to make three criticisms of Irwin Katz' timely and stimulating article, "Review of Evidence Relating to Effects of Desegregation on the Intellectual Performance of Negroes" (see record 1965-01781-001). My first criticism is that the author failed to include in his extensive bibliography reference to several pertinent studies/papers. My second criticism is directed against the author's failure to consider the possibility of hereditary differences between Negro and white children. My third criticism is directed toward the widespread tendency of psychologists to neglect the importance of heredity as a determinant of behavior, personality, and even of the environment. The role of visual search in the design of effective soft keyboards

As portable, handheld computing devices become more common, alternatives to traditional keyboards must be explored. These alternatives must be compact, lightweight and sufficiently efficient to support the users' tasks. One alternative is the use of small physical keyboards or soft keyboards presented on touch-sensitive surfaces. Many alternative layouts have been explored, including the QWERTY, Dvorak, telephone and various alphabetic organizations. Soukoreff and MacKenzie proposed a model to predict typing times for alternative layouts, but have experienced limited success matching their predictions to observed performance. This paper proposes a revision of the visual search component of their model that considers the familiarity of the organization and the number of letters represented by each key. Results are reported of an experiment that supports the claim that both familiarity and the number of letters per key must be considered when predicting visual search times for alternative keyboard layouts.     

Effects of grating heights on highly efficient unibond SOIwaveguide grating couplers

We report the first successful experimental evaluation of the effect of grating height upon the output efficiency of grating couplers as predicted using perturbation theory. In addition, we have also produced a grating with an output efficiency of 70%, which is the highest efficiency yet reported for a silicon-on-insulator waveguide grating coupler     

Macular degeneration and visual icon use: deriving guidelines for improved access

The objective of this study was to derive empirical knowledge of the visual search strategies of computer users who suffer from age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This was accomplished by recording eye movement during the use of feature-enhanced software. The results from this study show that there are differences between users who have AMD and users who are fully sighted (FS). Detailed analyses confirmed the hypotheses that there would be performance differences between the AMD and FS participants, and that specific features of the interface, namely icon size, background color, and the number of icons on a display, would significantly affect the search strategies of users. 0.15 dB/cm loss in Unibond SOI waveguides

The optical loss of Unibond waveguides is measured and reported for the first time, using grating couplers. At a wavelength of 1.3 μm, a loss of 0.15±0.05 dB/cm is obtained for TE polarisation. This allows good quality low loss integrated optical circuits to be fabricated at low cost
