PERFECT (Programming EnviRonment For Expert systems Constrained in reasoning Time) is aimed at providing the necessary engineering support in real-time knowledge-based system development. PERFECT bridges the gap between the traditional analysis and design methodologies, and the implementation tools for these systems. It does so by providing the means to construct a knowledge model and to choose a suitable inference strategy. Subsequently the properties of the knowledge model and inference strategy may be analysed. For instance, it may be checked whether the knowledge model contains sufficient knowledge to diagnose a fault in an industrial process. Moreover, it may be checked whether the inference engine is able to provide an answer to a certain problem in time. If not, the analyser of PERFECT proposes an alternative structure of the knowledge model. When the constructed knowledge model and the chosen inference strategy show the required time efficiency, the compiler of PERFECT may translate them to an actual real-time knowledge based system in COGSYS. In addition, guidelines are provided with respect to the design of the human-machine interface. The resulting system is an instrument—a source of information that can be used by the human operator during problem-solving, rather than a prosthesis—a device that solves the entire problem by itself and presents the outcome to the human operator.  相似文献

In western American rock art the concentric circle symbol, which is widely regarded as a sun symbol, is ubiquitous. We provide evidence from Archaic and Fremont Indian rock art sites in northwestern Utah that at least one depiction was motivated by an observation of a complex halo display. Cirrus cloud optical displays are linked in both folklore and meteorology to precipitation-producing weather situations, which, in combination with an abundance of weather-related rock art symbolism, indicate that such images reflected the ceremonial concerns of the indigenous cultures for ensuring adequate precipitation. As has been shown to be the case with rock art rainbows, conventionalization of the halo image may have resulted in simple patterns that lacked recognizable details of atmospheric optical phenomena. However, in one case in which an Archaic-style petroglyph (probably 1500 yr or more old) satisfactorily reproduced a complicated halo display that contained parhelia and tangent arcs, sufficient geometricinformation is rendered to indicate a solar elevation angle of ~ 40° at the time of observation.  相似文献

A vague glory display was photographed over central Utah from an airplane beginning its descent through a cirrus cloud layer with an estimated cloud top temperature of -45 and -55 degrees C. Photographic analysis reveals a single reddish-brown ring of 2.5-3.0 degrees radius around the antisolar point, although a second ring appeared visually to have been present over the brief observation period. Mie and approximate nonspherical theory scattering simulations predict a population of particles with modal diameters between 9 and 15 mum. Although it is concluded that multiple-ringed glories can be accounted for only through the backscattering of light from particles that are strictly spherical in shape, the poor glory colorization in this case could imply the presence of slightly aspherical ice particles. The location of this display over mountainous terrain suggests that it was generated by an orographic wave cloud, which we speculate produced numerous frozen cloud droplets that only gradually took on crystalline characteristics during growth.  相似文献

Achieving homogenised and stable suspensions has been one of the important research topics in nanofluid investigations. Preparing nanofluids, especially from the two-step method, is often accompanied with varying degrees of agglomerations depending on some parameters. These parameters include the physical structure of the nanoparticle, the prevalent particle charge, the strength of van der Waals forces of attraction and repulsiveness strength. Amongst the methods of deagglomeration, the use of ultrasonic vibration is most popular for achieving uniform dispersion. However, there are very few works related to its effect on the thermo-physical properties of nanofluids, and above all, standardising the minimum required ultrasonication time/energy for nanofluids synthesis. In this work, the optimum energy required for uniform and initially stable nanofluid has been investigated through experimental study on the combined influence of ultrasonication time/energy, nanoparticle size, volume fraction and temperature on the viscosity of alumina–glycerol nanofluids. Three different sizes of alumina nanoparticles were synthesised with glycerol using ultrasonication-assisted two-step approach. The viscosities of the nanofluid samples were measured between temperatures of 20–70?°C for volume fractions up to 5%. Based on the present experimental results, the viscosity characteristics of the nanofluid samples were dependent on particle size, volume fraction and working temperature. Using viscometry, the optimum energy density required for preparing homogenous nanofluid was obtained for all particle sizes and volume fractions. Finally, an energy density model was derived using dimensionless analysis based on the consideration of nanoparticle binding/interaction energy in base fluid, particle size, volume fraction, temperature and other base fluid properties. The model's empirical constants were obtained using nonlinear regression based on the present experimental data.  相似文献

1. The role of the renin-angiotensin system in the regulation of myocardial contractility is still debated. In order to investigate whether renin inhibition affects myocardial contractility and whether this action depends on intracardiac rather than circulating angiotensin II, the regional myocardial effects of systemic (i.v.) and intracoronary (i.c.) infusions of the renin inhibitor remikiren, were compared and related to the effects on systemic haemodynamics and circulating angiotensin II in open-chest anaesthetized pigs (25-30 kg). The specificity of the remikiren-induced effects was tested (1) by studying its i.c. effects after administration of the AT1-receptor antagonist L-158,809 and (2) by measuring its effects on contractile force of porcine isolated cardiac trabeculae. 2. Consecutive 10 min i.v. infusions of remikiren were given at 2, 5, 10 and 20 mg min-1. Mean arterial pressure (MAP), cardiac output (CO), heart rate (HR), systemic vascular resistance (SVR), myocardial oxygen consumption (MVO2) and left ventricular (LV) dP/dtmax were not affected by remikiren at 2 and 5 mg min-1, and were lowered at higher doses. At the highest dose, MAP decreased by 48%, CO by 13%, HR by 14%, SVR by 40%, MVO2 by 28% and LV dp/dtmax by 52% (mean values; P < 0.05 for difference from baseline, n = 5). The decrease in MVO2 was accompanied by a decrease in myocardial work (MAP x CO), but the larger decline in work (55% vs. 28%; P < 0.05) implies a reduced myocardial efficiency ((MAP x CO)/MVO2). 3. Consecutive 10 min i.c. infusions of remikiren were given at 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 5 and 10 mg min-1. MAP, CO, MVO2 and LV dP/dtmax were not affected by remikiren at 0.2, 0.5 and 1 mg min-1, and were reduced at higher doses. At the highest dose, MAP decreased by 31%, CO by 26%, MVO2 by 46% and LV dP/dtmax by 43% (mean values; P < 0.05 for difference from baseline, n = 6). HR and SVR did not change at any dose. 4. Thirty minutes after a 10 min i.v. infusion of the AT1 receptor antagonist, L-158,809 at 1 mg min-1, consecutive 10 min i.c. infusions (n = 5) of remikiren at 2, 5 and 10 mg min-1 no longer affected CO and MVO2, and decreased LV dP/dtmax by maximally 27% (P < 0.05) and MAP by 14% (P < 0.05), which was less than without AT1-receptor blockade (P < 0.05). HR and SVR remained unaffected. 5. Plasma renin activity and angiotensin I and II were reduced to levels at or below the detection limit at doses of remikiren that were not high enough to affect systemic haemodynamics or regional myocardial function, both after i.v. and i.c. infusion. 6. Remikiren (10(-10) to 10(-4) M) did not affect contractile force of porcine isolated cardiac trabeculae precontracted with noradrenaline. In trabeculae that were not precontracted no decrease in baseline contractility was observed with remikiren in concentrations up to 10(-5) M, whereas at 10(-4) M baseline contractility decreased by 19% (P < 0.05). 7. Results show that with remikiren i.v., at the doses we used, blood pressure was lowered primarily by vasodilation and with remikiren i.c. by cardiac depression. The blood levels of remikiren required for its vasodilator action are lower than the levels affecting cardiac contractile function. A decrease in circulating angiotensin II does not appear to be the sole explanation for these haemodynamic responses. Data support the contention that myocardial contractility is increased by renin-dependent angiotensin II formation in the heart.  相似文献

In this fourth of a series of papers that describe long-term cloud research at the Facility for Atmospheric Remote Sensing at Salt Lake City, Utah, an approximately 10-year record of polarization lidar and photographic observations is analyzed to characterize the occurrence of optical displays in our local varieties of midlatitude cirrus clouds. The frequencies of occurrence of various types of halo, arc, and corona displays are evaluated according to their appearance and longevity over nominal 1-h observation periods and to the meteorological source of the cirrus. We find that complex halo-arc displays are rare at our locale and that even the so-called common 22 degree halo occurs infrequently as a complete long-lived ring. For example, only approximately 6% of the 1561-h daytime cirrus periods have bright and prolonged 22 degree halos, although a total of 37.3% have some indications of this halo, even if they are brief and fragmentary. Other fairly frequent features are the 22 degree upper tangent arc (8.6%), 22 degree parhelia (8.5%), and solar corona (7.2%). Of the optical displays observed, 83.6% are refraction based, only 1.9% are due to reflection phenomena, and a surprising 15.4% are caused by diffraction. Complex halo-arc displays are disproportionally associated with cirrus formed in tropical or subtropical airflow and also contain more horizontally oriented planar ice crystals. Lidar linear depolarization ratios from a subset of vivid displays show significant differences between halo- and the corona-producing cirrus, reflecting the effects of particle shape. Halos are associated with relatively warm cirrus that contain randomly and horizontally oriented planar ice crystals, whereas the colder corona cirrus produce much stronger depolarization from crystals too small to be uniformly oriented. Comparisons are made with available information from other locales, and we attempt to explain the geographical differences in terms of basic cirrus cloud processes.  相似文献

On the evening of 25 November 1998, a cirrus cloud revealing the pastel colors of the iridescence phenomenon was photographed and studied by a polarization lidar system at the University of Utah Facility for Atmospheric Remote Sensing (FARS). The diffraction of sunlight falling on relatively minute cloud particles, which display spatial gradients in size, is the cause of iridescence. According to the 14-year study of midlatitude cirrus clouds at FARS, cirrus rarely produce even poor iridescent patches, making this particularly long-lived and vivid occurrence unique. In this unusually high (13.2-14.4-km) and cold (-69.7 degrees to -75.5 degrees) tropopause-topped cirrus cloud, iridescence was noted from approximately 6.0 degrees to approximately 13.5 degrees from the Sun. On the basis of simple diffraction theory, this indicates the presence of particles of 2.5-5.5-microm effective diameter. The linear depolarization ratios of delta = 0.5 measured by the lidar verify that the cloud particles were nonspherical ice crystals. The demonstration that ice clouds can generate iridescence has led to the conclusion that iridescence is rarely seen in midlatitude cirrus clouds because populations of such small particles do not exist for long in the presence of the relatively high water-vapor supersaturations needed for ice-particle nucleation.  相似文献

The operating conditions of many heat exchangers are in, or close to, the transitional flow regime. However, in this regime, not a lot of design information is available and some design books even recommend to not design heat exchangers to operate in the transitional flow regime. Furthermore, it is known that the type of inlet of heat exchangers influences the transition characteristics. It was therefore the purpose of this study to measure heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics in smooth horizontal tubes using different types of inlets. The types of inlets were hydrodynamically fully developed, square-edged, re-entrant, and bellmouth. Experiments were conducted on a 14.48-mm inner diameter horizontal tube in which the water was cooled. Reynolds numbers ranged between 1000 and 20,000 and Grashof numbers were on the order of 105. It was found that for adiabatic flow the square-edged inlet delayed transition to Reynolds numbers of around 2600, while the bellmouth inlet delayed it to about 7000. However, for diabatic flow, the transition was independent of the type of inlet. Laminar friction factors were much higher than their theoretically predicted values due to the secondary flows increasing the amount of mixing in the tube. Heat transfer measurements showed that transition with water was totally independent of the type of inlet used.  相似文献

Electronic space is often read as a purely technological event, being both self‐contained and neutral. However, this paper argues that what is left out of this purely technological reading is that electronic space is embedded in the larger dynamics organizing society. It has become important to distinguish the Internet, or public spaces, and private electronic space. The financial markets, operating largely through private electronic networks, are a good instance of an alternative form of electronic network power. The paper examines the topography of private electronic space and a new geography of centrality, set within an international context. Emerging cyber‐segmentations are identified which help to conceptualize forms of structuration in electronic space. The paper concludes that electronic space has emerged not simply as a means of transmitting information, but as a major new theatre for capital accumulation and the operations of global capital. Electronic space is now embedded in the larger dynamics organizing society, particularly the economy.  相似文献
