The ratio of the transverse relaxation rate to the longitudinal relaxation rate of water protons (T1/T2) at 90 MHz can be used to determine the relative amounts of free Mn2+ ions (the hexaquo ion) and chelated manganese ions when both species are present in the same aqueous solution. This technique is demonstrated for simple aqueous solutions containing known concentrations of both the free Mn2+ ion and a manganese(III) porphyrin. The accuracy of the method is found to be +/- 7.3% for the solutions considered in this report. The determinations of the relative amounts of the free Mn2+ ion and the manganese(III) porphyrin by this T1/T2 method are shown to agree well with those determined by nuclear magnetic resonance dispersion profiles. The theoretical basis of this ratio method as well as the scope and limitations in its application to aqueous solutions containing both free Mn2+ ions and chelated manganese species other than manganese(III) porphyrins are also discussed. This work demonstrates a unique use of NMR as a means for the quantitative analysis of manganese in which the effects of the metal ion on the solvent, and not the metal itself, are observed.  相似文献

Developing electronics in unconventional forms provides opportunities to expand the use of electronics in diverse applications including bio-integrated or implanted electronics. One of the key challenges lies in integrating semiconductor microdevices onto unconventional substrates without glue, high pressure or temperature that may cause damage to microdevices, substrates or interfaces. This paper describes a solution based on natural gecko setal arrays that switch adhesion mechanically on and off, enabling pick and place manipulation of thin microscale semiconductor materials onto diverse surfaces including plants and insects whose surfaces are usually rough and irregular. A demonstration of functional ‘geckoprinted’ microelectronic devices provides a proof of concept of our results in practical applications.  相似文献

Water quality studies often include the analytical challenge of incorporating censored data and quantifying error of estimation. Many analytical methods exist for estimating distribution parameters when censored data are present. This paper presents a Bayesian-based hierarchical model for estimating the national distribution of the mean concentrations of chemicals occurring in U.S. public drinking water systems using fluoride and thallium as examples. The data used are Safe Drinking Water Act compliance monitoring data (with a significant proportion of left-censored data). The model, which assumes log-normality, was evaluated using simulated data sets generated from a series of Weibull distributions to illustrate the robustness of the model. The hierarchical model is easily implemented using the Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation method. In addition, the Bayesian method is able to quantify the uncertainty in the estimated cumulative density function. The estimated fluoride and thallium national distributions are presented. Results from this study can be used to develop prior distributions for future U.S. drinking water regulatory studies of contaminant occurrence.  相似文献

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: For use as magnetic resonance imaging reference standards, the optimal set of phantoms should cover a wide range of T1 values, with each phantom having a T1 that is stable over time and is independent of temperature and magnetic field strength. To date, no set of phantoms fulfilling these four requirements has been prepared. In the current work, the construction of such optimal phantom standards is attempted. METHODS: Two linear gadolinium DTPA polymers are used: the first with relaxivities that are independent of temperature and magnetic field strength, and the second with relaxivities that are independent of magnetic field strength, but have an opposite temperature dependence from that of the 1/T1 of the diamagnetic matrix (agarose gel or water). Depending on the desired T1, either one or a combination of the two agents is used. RESULTS: Phantom standards were constructed with 1/T1 values that are independent of temperature (20-35 degrees C) and magnetic field strength (0.47-1.2 T) over a wide range of 1/T1 values (> or = 0.95 s-1). Phantom standards prepared in water were found to be stable with respect to 1/T1 for at least 18 months. CONCLUSIONS: Stable phantoms standards have been constructed covering a wide range of T1 values, where the T1 of any particular phantom is independent of temperature and magnetic field strength for magnetic resonance imaging conditions.  相似文献

If geckos had not evolved, it is possible that humans would never have invented adhesive nanostructures. Geckos use millions of adhesive setae on their toes to climb vertical surfaces at speeds of over 1ms-1. Climbing presents a significant challenge for an adhesive in requiring both strong attachment and easy rapid removal. Conventional pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are either strong and difficult to remove (e.g. duct tape) or weak and easy to remove (e.g. sticky notes). The gecko adhesive differs dramatically from conventional adhesives. Conventional PSAs are soft viscoelastic polymers that degrade, foul, self-adhere and attach accidentally to inappropriate surfaces. In contrast, gecko toes bear angled arrays of branched, hair-like setae formed from stiff, hydrophobic keratin that act as a bed of angled springs with similar effective elastic modulus to that of PSAs. Setae are self-cleaning and maintain function for months during repeated use in dirty conditions. Setae are an anisotropic 'frictional adhesive' in that adhesion requires maintenance of a proximally directed shear load, enabling either a tough bond or spontaneous detachment. Gecko-like synthetic adhesives may become the glue of the future-and perhaps the screw of the future as well.  相似文献

At any distribution centre (DC), the decision of whether to synchronise inbound and outbound flows for cross-docking, or to decouple these flows by maintaining inventory, has a significant impact on supply chain performance. Key drivers of this decision, in turn, are the sizes of the discrete lots that comprise the flows. Thus, we formulate an original optimisation model that determines order lot-sizing decisions to minimise, for given constant arc flows, the sum of ordering cost and pipeline inventory cost on arcs and buffer inventory at DCs. The model employs an average throughput as a surrogate to estimate buffer inventory at facilities at which synchronisation is not economical and therefore serves to decouple inbound and outbound flows. Perfect lot-for-lot matching of shipments would impose very restrictive constraints on supply chain operations, but equality of average throughput indicates an innovative, relaxed mode of synchronisation. This mode is practicable for cross-docking by means of bulk-breaking or consolidation of shipments. A heuristic approach based on the Lagrangian relaxation and subgradient optimisation is developed for the non-linear mixed-general integer optimisation model, which is illustrated by numerical examples and tested using a benchmark data set.  相似文献

The structure and morphology of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) injection molded coupons have been investigated using wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), light microscopy, and laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS). By sectioning the samples at approximately 200 μm increments, profiles across “hot molded” (oil heated to 140°C) and “cold molded” (water heated to 104°C) coupons, could be built up. Using DSC and WAXS, variations in crystallinity and polymorphic phases were observed. The crystallinity was found to remain fairly constant in the “hot molded” samples, whereas the cold molded samples had a pronounced “amorphous” skin, before becoming more uniform towards the center of the specimen. Characterization of the polymers' microstructure, in the molded plaques, was achieved by optical birefringence. The surface of the plaques were successfully etched with an acid/permanganate solution, prior to SEM studies, to reveal their morphology. Overall, the coupons showed very little orientation effects and the structure appeared to be consistent with that of a semicrystalline polymer, crystallized under relaxed conditions.  相似文献

In an era when arduous land and sea journeys separated exporting and recipient nations, the duration and stress of transport dictated localised sourcing of stock and provided an implicit quarantine. Clinically latent infection, which remained undetected prior to embarkation, often surfaced and was eliminated before reaching the importing country. Many nations which would not accept the risk of importation, on clinical grounds, could effectively isolate themselves by prohibiting entry. Passive acceptance characterised much of the response of industry to the perceived wisdom behind such decisions. Advances in transportation technology now permit the accumulation of an export consignment from across an entire country. The assembled shipment is a sentinel for the infection experience of the national herd. The journey to the final destination is measured in hours, rather than weeks. Parallel diagnostic and epidemiological advances face the challenge of compensating for the risks attendant in such widespread and rapid sourcing of stock. Nations which judge the risks as unacceptable face a concerted legal challenge on a series of levels, both domestic and international. Refusal of legal importation can be circumvented easily through the smuggling of germ plasm. National Veterinary Services must respond to the economic, social and political realities of this new international trading environment. The means of facing this challenge through quantitative risk analysis are described. The theory of risk analysis, as well as the qualitative and quantitative evolution of the import applications of this analysis, is explained. Current challenges and potential solutions are discussed.  相似文献
