Glycoconjugated polymer 6. Synthesis of poly[styrene-<Emphasis Type="Italic">block</Emphasis>-(styrene-<Emphasis Type="Italic">graft</Emphasis>-amylose)] via potato phosphorylase-catalyzed polymerization

Summary The potato phosphorylase-catalyzed polymerization of α-D-glucose-1-phosphate (G-1-P) onto poly[styrene-block-(4-vinylbenzyl maltohexaoside)] (1) was performed at the molar ratios of [G-l-P]₀ and [maltohexaose]₀ of 35, 80, and 250. The product was found to be soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide, which was a good solvent for amylose, and showed the complex-formation with iodine, indicating that the product was assignable to poly[styrene-block-(styrene-graft-amylose)] (2). The quantitative analysis of the liberated phosphoric acid gave the average degree of polymerization o f the glucose unit (n) as 27, 5 1, and 180 for 2-I, 2-II, and 2-III, respectively. X gene and precore region mutations in the hepatitis B virus genome in persons positive for antibody to hepatitis B e antigen: comparison between asymptomatic "healthy" carriers and patients with severe chronic active hepatitis

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) carriers with antibody to hepatitis e antigen comprise asymptomatic carriers (ASCs), who have low replication levels of HBV, and patients with chronic active hepatitis (CAH), who have high levels of viral replication. To investigate whether defects in the X protein might be responsible for this difference in the level of viral replication, nucleotide sequences of X and precore gene regions in serum HBV were analyzed in 19 ASCs and 9 CAH patients. All patients had a point mutation creating a stop codon in the precore region. Seventeen ASCs (87.3%) had identical mutations consisting of 4 noncontiguous 1-bp deletions or an 8-bp deletion, both of which truncate the normal X protein, whereas no CAH patient had an X gene mutation (P < .001). Thus, deletion of the X protein might be responsible for the low levels of viral replication in ASCs.

Determination of internal state variables and constitutive modeling for Type 316 stainless steel

The purpose of this study is to develop an approach for unified constitutive modeling based on experimentally determined back stress and overstress. Back stress and overstress were experimentally determined for Type 316 stainless steel at 600°C, by analyzing the unloading curve for the stress-strain response of cyclic strain tests. The result has indicated that the cyclic strain hardening behavior is mainly caused by hardening in the back stress. A phenomenological unified constitutive model in which the back stress and drag stress are taken as the internal state variables is proposed, and has been shown that this model is able to simulate the cyclic inelastic behavior.

Spectral properties of nanoengineered Ag/Au bilayer rods fabricated by electron beam lithography

Ag/Au bimetallic nanoparticles possess the combinatory advantages of Au and Ag nanoparticles and can also be utilized to tune the properties of localized surface plasmon resonance. Ag/Au bilayer nanorods were prepared by electron beam lithography, and their spectral properties were investigated. Compared with Ag monolayer nanorods, Ag/Au bilayer nanorods show broader localized surface plasmon resonance bands, and the longitudinal mode and transverse mode localized surface plasmon bands show blueshift and redshift, respectively. The maximum near-field intensity of the longitudinal mode of the Ag/Au nanorod is less than half that of the Ag/Au nanorod without gold layer. Shape-induced modification of Ag/Au bilayer nanorods on their spectral properties was also discussed.     

Intrarenal hemodynamic abnormalities in diabetic nephropathy measured by duplex Doppler sonography

Intrarenal hemodynamics were studied by duplex Doppler sonography in 112 inpatients with type II diabetes mellitus (DM; 65 males, 47 females, 58 +/- 13 years old). The resistive index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) of the interlobar arteries were calculated. The patients were divided into four groups: group I consisted of patients with urinary albumin excretion (UAE) < 20 micrograms/min (N = 42), group II with 20 < or = UAE < 200 (N = 28), group III with UAE > or = 200 (N = 25), and group IV with serum creatinine > or = 1.5 mg/dl (N = 17). Both RI and PI values in groups II, III, and IV were significantly higher than those in the controls (age- and sex-matched healthy persons, N = 37; P < 0.001), and those in group IV were significantly higher than those in groups I, II, and III (P < 0.0001). Multiple regression analysis revealed that RI values in DM patients were significantly affected by creatinine clearance, age, and duration of diabetes (R2 = 0.554, P < 0.0001). When intima-medial thickness (IMT) of the femoral and carotid arteries were measured by B-mode ultrasonography, RI values were significantly correlated with both the femoral and carotid arterial IMT. These results demonstrate that intrarenal hemodynamic abnormalities are present in type II DM patients with nephropathy, and that intrarenal hemodynamics are affected by decreased glomerular function and also probably by advanced arteriosclerosis.     

Decrease in glomerular filtration rate in Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes is linked to atherosclerosis

OBJECTIVE: We assessed the effects of atherosclerosis on the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in patients with type 2 diabetes and who had micro- or normoalbuminuria. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 61 Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes were recruited from inpatients of Osaka City University Hospital. They ranged in age from 40 to 69 years (28 men and 33 women). Each subject collected a 24-h urine sample for quantitative analysis of albumin. Absence of albuminuria was defined as a urinary albumin excretion level of <30 mg/24 h (n = 36) and microalbuminuria as a level of 30-300 mg/24 h. The GFR was estimated using 99mTc diethylenetriamine pentaacetic renogram method. As indexes of atherosclerosis, we measured the intimal-medial thickness (IMT) and distensibility of the carotid artery using high-resolution B-mode ultrasonagraphy and an echo-tracking system. We measured the resistance index (RI) of the renal interlobar arteries by pulsed Doppler sonography. RESULTS: The clinical characteristics of type 2 diabetic patients with and without microalbuminuria did not differ except for duration of diabetes, which was longer in the patients with microalbuminuria. GFR also did not differ between the patients with and without microalbuminuria. GFR was significantly correlated with the patient's age (r = -0.256, P < 0.05), carotid IMT (r = -0.326, P < 0.05), carotid stiffness beta (r = -0.449, P < 0.001), and renal arterial RI (r = -0.365, P < 0.05). In multiple regression analysis, independent factors associated with GFR were carotid IMT (R2 = 0.108, P = 0.0102), carotid stiffness beta (R2 = 0.208, P = 0.0003), and renal artery RI (R2 = 0.130, P = 0.0043). CONCLUSIONS: The decline in GFR in type 2 diabetic patients in the early stages of nephropathy may be due in part to atherosclerosis.     

A 28 μm water-vapor laser interferometer for plasma diagnostics

A high-power CW 27.972 μm water-vapor laser has been developed for interferometric and polarimetric measurements of plasmas. The maximum output power and the power density in the cavity of the laser with 2.0 cm bore and 220 cm length reach 85 mW and 109 μW/cm³, respectively. An interferometer using this laser is constructed and its performance is examined as a study on polarimetric method of magnetic field measurement. Preliminary interferometric experiments are also carried out on a compact toroidal plasma with field-reversal configuration.
