The broad range of capabilities exhibited by humans and animals is achieved through a large set of heterogeneous, tightly integrated cognitive mechanisms. To move artificial systems closer to such general-purpose intelligence we cannot avoid replicating some subset—quite possibly a substantial portion—of this large set. Progress in this direction requires that systems integration be taken more seriously as a fundamental research problem. In this paper I make the argument that intelligence must be studied holistically. I present key issues that must be addressed in the area of integration and propose solutions for speeding up rate of progress towards more powerful, integrated A.I. systems, including (a) tools for building large, complex architectures, (b) a design methodology for building realtime A.I. systems and (c) methods for facilitating code sharing at the community level.

In this article we describe results froman experiment of user interaction with autonomous , human - like ( humanoid ) conversational agents . We hypothesize that for embodied conversational agents , nonverbal behaviors related to the process of conversation , what we call envelope feedback, is much more important than other feedback , such as emotional expression . We test this hypothesis by having subjects interact with three autonomous agents , all capable of full - duplex multimodal interaction: able to generate and recognize speech , intonation , facial displays , and gesture . Each agent , however , gave a different kind of feedback: ( 1 ) content - related only , ( 2 ) content + envelope feedback , and ( 3 ) content + emotional . Content-related feedback includes answering questions and executing commands; envelope feedback includes behaviors such as gaze , manual beat gesture , and head movements; emotional feedback includes smiles and looks of puzzlement . Subjects' evaluations of the systemwere collected with a questionnaire , and videotapes of their speech patterns and behaviors were scored according to how often the users repeated themselves , how often they hesitated , and how often they got frustrated . The results confirmour hypothesis that envelope feedback is more important in interaction than emotional feedback and that envelope feedback plays a crucial role in supporting the process of dialog . A secondary result fromthis study shows that users give our multimodal conversational humanoids very high ratings of lifelikeness and fluidity of interaction when the agents are capable of giving such feedback .  相似文献

While welding processes are of great importance in manufacturing, their modeling and control is still subject of research. The highly nonlinear, strongly coupled, and multivariable nature of these processes renders the use of analytical tools practically impossible. In this article a novel approach is presented which employs networks of simple nonlinear units: a neural network. A widely used welding process, the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding is presented and the problem of its modeling and control is exhibited. A very brief introduction to neural networks is followed by presenting the experimental results for modeling the static and dynamic behavior of the process, as well as some practical recommendations regarding the use of the neural network techniques for controlling these processes.  相似文献

We report on a time-dependent Lippmann–Schwinger scattering theory that allows us to study the transport spectroscopy in a time-modulated double quantum point contact system in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. Magnetotransport properties involving inter-subband and inter-sideband transitions are tunable by adjusting the time-modulated split-gates and the applied magnetic field. The observed magnetic field induced Fano resonance feature may be useful for the application of quantum switching.  相似文献

Past and future suicide attempt rates among gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) young people were compared with those of heterosexual young people. A sample of Norwegian students (N=2,924; grades 7-12) was followed in 3 data collection waves. Risk factors included previous suicide attempt, depressed mood, eating problems, conduct problems, early sexual debut, number of sexual partners, pubertal timing, self-concept, alcohol and drug use, atypical gender roles, loneliness, peer relations, social support. parental attachment, parental monitoring, and suicidal behavior among family and friends. When homosexual attraction, homosexual identity, and same-sex sexual behavior were entered to predict suicide attempt, only same-sex sexual behavior was significantly predictive. This paper presents a computational model of real - time task - oriented dialog skills . The model , termed Ymir, bridges multimodal perception and multimodal action and supports the creation of autonomous computer characters that afford full - duplex , real - time face - to - face interaction with a human . Ymir has been prototyped in software , and a humanoid created , called Gandalf, capable of fluid multimodal dialog . Ymir demonstrates several new ideas in the creation of communicative computer agents , including perceptual integration of multimodal events, distributed planning and decision making, an explicit handling of real time, and perceptuo-motor system layered and motor control with human characteristics. This paper describes the model's architecture and explains its main elements . Examples of implementation and performance are given , and the architecture's limitations and possibilities are discussed .  相似文献

Heat exchangers play a dominant role in the performance of most energy systems; however, optimization of these components is a complex task due to the coupled nature of the design parameters involved. Anytime the heat transfer coefficient is increased in these components, there is a corresponding increase in frictional pressure drop; therefore, a delicate balance is required between these two effects in heat exchanger optimization.

The finned-tube condenser heat exchangers used in residential air conditioning systems are examined in this study. Due to the intricate geometry of the finned-tube heat exchanger, there are no analytical optimization schemes available to optimize their design, while experimental trial and error is far too time consuming, considering the ten different design parameters that can be varied for optimization.

This study develops a system model using available analytical and empirical correlations for the entire air conditioning cycle with great detail in the condenser component. An optimization algorithm then uses this model to find an optimum design for ten condenser design parameters using various constraints with a system COP figure of merit. The design optimization methodology is fully developed and presented in the paper so that it can be applied to other energy systems' heat exchanger optimization opportunities.

The optimum condenser design was found to give the same performance as a coil optimized through a manual search costing 23% more. It is also shown that the optimum design is consistent with minimum entropy generation for the total system.  相似文献

In this paper the points in a 4-bar which have one or more double points in their path are mapped out. It is found these regions are defined by the centrodes of the linkage and by the transition curves. The areas defined by the transition curve are small and may be neglected in most cases.  相似文献
