Five experiments are reported that investigate the distribution of selective attention to verbal and nonverbal components of an utterance when conflicting information exists in these channels. A Stroop-type interference paradigm is adopted in which attributes from the verbal and nonverbal dimensions are placed into conflict. Static directional (deictic) gestures and corresponding spoken and written words show symmetrical interference (Experiments 1, 2, and 3), as do directional arrows and spoken words (Experiment 4). This symmetry is maintained when the task is switched from a manual keypress to a verbal naming response (Experiment 5), suggesting the mutual influence of the 2 dimensions is independent of spatial stimulus-response compatibility. It is concluded that the results are consistent with a model of interference in which information from pointing gestures and speech is integrated prior to the response selection stage of processing. The measurement of broadband ultrasonic attenuation (BUA) in cancellous bone at the calcaneus for the assessment of osteoporosis was first described within this journal 25 years ago. It was recognized in 2006 by Universities UK as being one of the '100 discoveries and developments in UK Universities that have changed the world' over the past 50 years. In 2008, the UK's Department of Health also recognized BUA assessment of osteoporosis in a publication highlighting 11 projects that have contributed to '60 years of NHS research benefiting patients'. The BUA technique has been extensively clinically validated and is utilized worldwide, with at least seven commercial systems currently providing calcaneal BUA measurement. However, there is still no fundamental understanding of the dependence of BUA upon the material and structural properties of cancellous bone. This review aims to provide an 'engineering in medicine' perspective and proposes a new paradigm based upon phase cancellation due to variation in propagation transit time across the receive transducer face to explain the non-linear relationship between BUA and bone volume fraction in cancellous bone.  相似文献

Stereolithography (STL) models of complex cancellous bone structures have been produced from three-dimensional micro-computed tomography data sets of human cancellous bone histological samples from four skeletal sites. The STL models have been mechanically tested and the derived stiffness compared with that predicted by finite element analysis. The results show a strong correlation (R2 = 0.941) between the predicted and calculated stiffnesses of the structures and show promise for the use of STL as an additional technique to complement the use of finite element models, for the assessment of the mechanical properties of complex cancellous bone structures.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Human studies have demonstrated that processing of tomato can greatly increase lycopene bioavailability. However, the difference between processing methods is not widely investigated. In the current study different thermal treatments of tomato were evaluated with regard to their impact on in vitro bioaccessibility and retention of lycopene and β‐carotene as well as textural properties. Thermal treatments used were low (60 °C) and high (90 °C) temperature blanching followed by boiling. RESULTS: Lycopene was relatively stable during thermal treatment, whereas β‐carotene was significantly (P < 0.05) reduced by all heat treatments except for low temperature blanching. In vitro bioaccessibility of lycopene was significantly increased from 5.1 ± 0.2 to 9.2 ± 1.8 and 9.7 ± 0.6 mg kg?1 for low and high temperature blanching, respectively. An additional boiling step after blanching did not further improve lycopene bioaccessibility for any treatment, but significantly reduced the consistency of low temperature treated samples. CONCLUSION: Choice and order of processing treatments can have a large impact on both lycopene bioavailability and texture of tomato products. Further investigations are needed, but this study provides one of the first steps towards tomato products tailored to optimise nutritional benefits. Many areas of biomedical engineering involve the modelling of biological systems, often using data from medical scanning techniques such as computed microtomography (microCT), and the prediction of the mechanical properties of these systems via finite element models. These models, and also those produced from remodelling simulations on idealized bone structures, are inherently highly pixelated and therefore have a high degree of surface roughness. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that this surface roughness need not necessarily have an influence on the predicted properties of the object under examination. To demonstrate this, two-dimensional idealized models of cancellous bone structures were used that were initially depleted and then rebuilt stochastically. A hysteresis effect was observed such that a significant amount of rebuilding beyond the original density was required to regain the initial intact stiffness. To ensure that this effect was not an artefact of the high degree of surface roughness of the rebuilt structures, a two-stage smoothing procedure was applied to assess if this had any effect on the stiffness of the structures. The superpixelation of the structures appeared to have a more profound effect than the smoothing procedures, although the smoothed structures still had stiffness and density values similar to those of the original structures, with a hysteresis effect still evident. This proves that the pixelization of the structures does not have a significant effect on the predicted mechanical properties of the structures. This work has important implications for other models that exhibit a high degree of surface roughness.  相似文献

Ependymomas are rare neuroectodermal tumors arising from ependymal cells of the ventricular system, choroid plexus, filum terminale, and central canal of the spinal cord (1,2). This review focuses on intracranial ependymomas with special emphasis on pathology, etiology, cytogenetic characteristics, and adjuvant radiation therapy. Recent advances in neurosurgical technique, radiation therapy, and molecular biology have affected management of these tumors and have the potential to increase long-term cure rates. The role of highly advanced radiation therapy techniques such as stereotactic radiosurgery will need to be better defined.  相似文献

Osteoporosis, often termed the 'silent epidemic', has been defined as 'a decrease in bone mass and architectural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to enhanced bone fragility and consequent increase in fracture risk'. In the United Kingdom alone, the annual health costs are in excess of 750 million Pounds, with 60,000 patients suffering a hip fracture each year. A quarter of these will die within 12 months of their fracture, half of the remainder will never regain independent living. The established procedure for assessing the risk of osteoporotic fracture is via bone mineral density (BMD) assessment using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). However, DXA is an expensive technique and is not widely available. Within the past 15 years, ultrasound assessment of bone has rapidly advanced in scientific understanding, technical development and clinical utility. Measurements of cancellous bone (particularly at the calcaneus) are generally performed in preference to those of cortical bone (tibial cortex). There are currently 15 commercial systems available and over 3500 systems are in use world-wide. The low cost and portability offered by ultrasound systems should enable an integrated community-based screening programme to be established in the near future. Ultrasound measurements of bone are generally obtained using transmission rather than pulse-echo techniques owing to its highly attenuating nature. Ultrasound velocity and attenuation measurements are utilized. For velocity, there are well-defined fundamental relationships describing the dependence upon the elasticity and density of bone.  相似文献

The effect of flow history, processing temperature, and exit draw ratio have been studied for copolymers of vinylidene fluoride/trifluoroethylene of molar compositions 66/34 and 75/25%. The copolymers were extruded through an impinging channels film die which produces a mixed extension and shearing flow as well as a slit die. Stress fields during flow were measured using flow birefringence. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) analyses were used to characterize the thermal behavior; and flat film and Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS) were used to evaluate the crystal structure and morphology of the extrudates. Extensional melt stresses on the order of 6.35 × 105 Pa were necessary to induce sufficient orientation for crystallization of water-cooled 66/34 mol % copolymers into the all-trans configuration. Preorientation of the melt by extensional stresses enhanced the transformation of the 3/1 helical to an all-trans structure in the 66/34 copolymer as well as producing a more compact unit cell in the 75/25 mol % copolymer leading to as much as a 7°C higher Curie transition temperature.  相似文献

Autotransfusion is becoming increasingly popular, mainly because it eliminates the risk of disease transmission. One of the techniques available is intra-operative blood salvage and retransfusion with or without washing of the collected blood. The blood collected during this process is subjected to a variety of chemical and physical insults which can alter the normal composition of the plasma by activating plasma and cellular homeostatic mechanisms. In this study, we measured the plasma levels of total phospholipids, lysolecithin and non-esterified fatty acids, and the lipolytic enzymes phospholipase A2 (PLA2) and lipase in the salvaged blood before and after washing. In the unwashed salvaged blood the mean levels of PLA2, non-esterified fatty acids and lysophospholipids increased by 144, 96 and 149%, respectively, while those of total phospholipids and lipase did not change to any extent. All these substances were reduced to well below the patients circulating plasma levels by washing the collected blood. The changes indicate that the lipid profile of salvaged blood is significantly altered and that potentially dangerous substances such as PLA2 and its metabolites, lysolecithin and non-esterified fatty acids, are present in increased amounts. Washing the blood is recommended prior to reinfusion.  相似文献
