To Do or to Have? That Is the Question.

Do experiences make people happier than material possessions? In two surveys, respondents from various demographic groups indicated that experiential purchases-those made with the primary intention of acquiring a life experience--made them happier than material purchases. In a follow-up laboratory experiment, participants experienced more positive feelings after pondering an experiential purchase than after pondering a material purchase. In another experiment, participants were more likely to anticipate that experiences would make them happier than material possessions after adopting a temporally distant, versus a temporally proximate, perspective. The discussion focuses on evidence that experiences make people happier because they are more open to positive reinterpretations, are a more meaningful part of one's identity, and contribute more to successful social relationships. Pharmacokinetics of 2-oxothiazolidine-4-carboxylate, a cysteine prodrug, and cysteine

The pharmacokinetics of both 2-oxothiazolidine-4-carboxylate (OTZ), a prodrug of cysteine, and total blood cysteine (cysteine plus cystine) were investigated in 18 healthy volunteers. OTZ was given either as a single, 2-hour intravenous infusion (56-66 mg/kg) or similarly infused (70-100 mg/kg) every 8 hours for four doses. Blood was assayed for OTZ, total blood cysteine, and glutathione. The pharmacokinetics of OTZ were analyzed alone and simultaneously with total cysteine using the NONMEM software package (University of California at San Francisco. The pharmacokinetics of OTZ were best described by Michaelis-Menten kinetics with parallel first-order elimination. OTZ was efficiently removed from the plasma. The Michaelis-Menten route of elimination was attributed to conversion of OTZ to total cysteine. At plasma OTZ concentrations equal to the Michaelis constant Km, 84% of OTZ was converted to total cysteine. These findings suggest that OTZ administered intravenously is an efficient means of increasing total blood cysteine.

21—THE NATURE OF INTER-FIBRE FRICTIONAL EFFECTS IN WOVEN-FABRIC BENDING

Inter-fibre friction in woven-fabric bending is discussed in terms of the fibre and fabric characteristics that influence its effect on a fabric's bending resistance. A model of the contribution of inter-fibre friction to fabric bending is developed. This model is combined with an existing model of the contribution of fibre bending to produce a new three-element model of a woven fabric in bending. The behaviour of this model is compared with experimental measurements on real fabrics in cyclic bending.     

Pinch-Off Voltage-Adjustable High-Voltage Junction Field-Effect Transistor

In this letter, a novel type of high-voltage n-channel junction field-effect transistor (JFET) was designed using a conventional n-channel laterally diffused metal-oxide-semiconductor (n-LDMOS) without changing any step in the process. High-voltage JFET can be a start-up device in power factor correction, dc-ac converters, and ac-dc converters for providing a self-powered circuit and minimizing standby power losses without gate control because of its negative threshold voltage. Experimental results show that an n-LDMOS with this JFET structure can achieve a reverse blocking voltage of more than 700 V with very low leakage current. The pinch-off voltage can be designed by changing n-well width to meet the circuit requirement.     

Bullous urticaria pigmentosa

Urticaria pigmentosa is the most common manifestation of cutaneous mastocytosis. Three-quarters of all cases occur during infancy or early childhood. Occasionally, vesicles or bullae may appear in persons with urticaria pigmentosa. We describe an unusual case of bullous urticaria pigmentosa with prominent scalp involvement. Prognosis and therapy are reviewed.     

Prevention of ischemia-induced cardiac sudden death by n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in dogs

The objective of this study was to obtain functional information associated with the prevention by n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) of ischemia-induced fatal cardiac ventricular arrhythmias in the intact, conscious, exercising dog. Thirteen dogs susceptible to ischemia-induced ventricular fibrillation were prepared surgically by ligation of their anterior descending left coronary artery and placement of an inflatable cuff around their left circumflex artery. After 4 wk of recovery, exercise-plus-ischemia tests were performed without and then with an intravenous infusion of an emulsion of free n-3 PUFA just prior to occluding the left circumflex artery while the animals were running on a treadmill. One week later the exercise-plus-ischemia test was repeated but with a control infusion replacing the emulsion of n-3 PUFA. The infusion of the free n-3 PUFA in quantities of 1.0 to 10 g prevented ventricular fibrillation in 10 of the 13 dogs tested (P < 0.005), apparently without esterification of the PUFA into membrane phospholipids. The antiarrhythmic effect of the n-3 PUFA was associated with slowing of the heart rate, shortening of the QT-interval (electrical action potential duration), reduction of left ventricular systolic pressure, and prolongation of the electrocardiographic atrial-ventricular conduction time (P-R interval). These effects are comparable with those we have reported in studies with cultured neonatal rat cardiac myocytes.     

Mass transfer with Nth order chemical reaction around spheres in the presence of surfactants

A numerical technique has been used to solve the nonlinear equation describing the mass transfer taking place for single and multiple particles for Nth order chemical reactions in the presence of a surfactant. A generalized form is given for the Sherwood number as a function of the Peclet number for reaction orders of 1/2, 1 and 2 in the presence of surfactants, (Sh = aPe^b). The parameters (a) and (b) are dependent on the reaction orders and the amount of surfactant present. The coefficient (b) had an average value of 0.46 with the parameter (a) increasing with larger reaction rate constants. The numerical technique involved DISPL, a computer software package for the solution of partial differential equations by the method of lines.
