Over the past decade, telomeres have attracted increasing attention due to the role they play in human fertility. However, conflicting results have been reported on the possible association between sperm telomere length (STL) and leukocyte telomere length (LTL) and the quality of the sperm parameters. The aim of this study was to run a comprehensive study to investigate the role of STL and LTL in male spermatogenesis and infertility. Moreover, the association between the sperm parameters and 11 candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), identified in the literature for their association with telomere length (TL), was investigated. We observed no associations between sperm parameters and STL nor LTL. For the individual SNPs, we observed five statistically significant associations with sperm parameters: considering a p < 0.05. Namely, ACYP2˗rs11125529 and decreased sperm motility (p = 0.03); PXK˗rs6772228 with a lower sperm count (p = 0.02); NAF1˗rs7675998 with increased probability of having abnormal acrosomes (p = 0.03) and abnormal flagellum (p = 0.04); ZNF208˗rs8105767 and reduction of sperms with normal heads (p = 0.009). This study suggests a moderate involvement of telomere length in male fertility; however, in our analyses four SNPs were weakly associated with sperm variables, suggesting the SNPs to be pleiotropic and involved in other regulatory mechanisms independent of telomere homeostasis, but involved in the spermatogenic process.  相似文献

The paper investigates efficient bandwidth allocation schemes for the transmission of MPEG-2 video traffic on high-speed networks. To this end we performed an extensive analysis of the traffic generated by an MPEG-2 encoder. Specifically, we encoded “The Sheltering Sky” movie according to the MPEG-2 standard. By the analysis of the generated traffic it results that a constant-quality transmission can be performed with a poor bandwidth utilization. In the paper we identified that the low bandwidth utilization is caused by rare high-rate periods in the codec bitstream. Hence, we identified the source scalability as a promising approach to achieve a “quasi-constant” quality transmission and an efficient bandwidth utilization. The effectiveness of this approach is evaluated in the paper via simulation. Specifically, by defining a Markovian model for an MPEG-2 scalable source we performed a set of simulation experiments which indicate that the source scalability approach significantly increases the utilization, while maintaining the quality of the video signal at the highest value for most of the time, e.g., a 50% of the network utilization with the highest quality for the 99.7% of the time.  相似文献

Most of the works for solving early vision problems, such as stereo, rely on inference techniques and cyclic graphical models. Although Loopy Belief Propagation is one of the most interesting tools as it applies to that research field, loops are still a major challenge to face: the main problem arising with them is the introduction of approximation issues which could affect the accuracy of the final results. Therefore, breaking loops could be the winning strategy to overcome these problems. In this paper, we describe a way to consider an MRF grid as composed by a suitable set of singly connected graphs. Then, an acyclic propagation scheme, based on that set, is given accordingly. Experiments performed on different stereo pairs will prove that our approach is up to the current state-of-art and it spreads several new research issues for the future.  相似文献

This paper presents a novel distributed object segmentation framework that allows one to extract potentially large coherent objects from digital images. The proposed approach requires minimum user supervision and permits to segment the objects accurately. It works in three steps starting with the user input in form of few mouse clicks on the target object. First, based on user input, the statistical characteristics of the target distributed object are modeled with Gaussian mixture model. This model serves as the primary segmentation of the object. In the second step, the segmentation result is refined by performing connected component analysis to reduce false positives. In the final step the resulting segmentation map is dilated to select the neighboring pixels that are potentially incorrectly classified; this allows us to recast the segmentation as a graph partitioning problem that can be solved using the well-known graph cut technique. Extensive experiments have been carried out on heterogeneous images to test the accuracy of the proposed method for the segmentation of various types of distributed objects. Examples of application of proposed technique in remote sensing to segment roads and rivers from aerial images are also presented. The visual and objective evaluation and comparison with the existing techniques show that the proposed tool can deliver optimal performance when applied to tough object segmentation tasks.

The literature is poor in the analyses of the effects produced by corrupted bits in compressed video bitstreams. This paper presents the results of a transmission experiment of MPEG-2 coded video data over a satellite link affected by noise, in order to investigate under which conditions this type of transmission is economically feasible. The signal-to-noise ratio scalability feature of the MPEG-2 encoder was used to produce different bitstreams of the same movie sequence. The scope of the study was to verify which are the best combinations of video and channel codings in the presence of attenuation on the satellite link, in order to optimize the bandwidth utilisation for a requested image quality. The results obtained give indications about the data channel codings to be used to counter the rain fade on the transmission link, which is a non negligible problem especially when satellite transmissions are in the Ka band. Moreover, the results highlight the flexibility of the scalable video coding in the examined scenario.  相似文献
