Integrated Ka-band finline mixer/modulator

A new mixer/modulator for millimetre-wave applications is presented. The circuit is implemented with a combination of finlines, coplanar lines and microstrip lines. By applying the described mixer/modulator to millimetre-wave systems a twofold use of active elements such as the Gunn element and Schottky diodes is possible. The size of the whole planar structure is about 4 × 4 cm and there is no need for a variable short.     

An analysis of GCFR depressurization transients without scram

Four transients imposed on a gas cooled fast breeder reactor (GCFBR or GCFR) plant are analyzed. The transients are variations of a design basis depressurization accident (DBDA) [1], in which a rupture is postulated in the inlet plenum, the reactor is scramed and the circulator output is drastically reduced. Variations considered are, (1) in all cases the reactor is not scrammed; and (2) the rupture size is varied from 0.6 ft² to zero. In the limit of zero (no rupture) the transient imposed on the system is due to the behavior of the circulator and steam generator during a DBDA.

Zusammenfassung Mit Hilfe des Impulssalzes, des Energiesatzes, der Kontinuit?ts- und der Gasgleichung gelang es, eine grunds?tzlich eBeziehung für das Verh?ltnis der Zustr?m- zur Abstr?mgeschwindigkeit bei der reibungsfreien Str?mung durch Gitter aus dünnen, geraden Schaufeln herzuleiten. Eine besondere Untersuchung zeigte die Gültigkeitsgrenzen dieser Grundgleichung auf und erm?glichte es, Grenzkurven aufzuzeichnen, aus denen man die gerade noch m?gliche Zustr?m-Machzahl in Abh?ngigkeit von der Gasart, vom Sto?winkel der Str?mung und vom Gitterwinkel ablesen kann. Diese überlegungen wurden auch auf die reibungsbehaftete Str?mung ausgedehnt und zum Berechnen des adiabaten Verdichtungswirkungsgrades verwendet. Versuche mit schie?endem Wasser (Wasseranalogie), die nach einem eigens hierfür entwickelten Grenzkurven-Diagramm ausgewertet worden sind, und mit Luft in einem kleinen überschall-Versuchsstand best?ligten die Rechenergebnisse befriedigend genau. Session-based item recommendation in e-commerce: on short-term intents,reminders, trends and discounts

Many e-commerce sites present additional item recommendations to their visitors while they navigate the site, and ample evidence exists that such recommendations are valuable for both customers and providers. Academic research often focuses on the capability of recommender systems to help users discover items they presumably do not know yet and which match their long-term preference profiles. In reality, however, recommendations can be helpful for customers also for other reasons, for example, when they remind them of items they were recently interested in or when they point site visitors to items that are currently discounted. In this work, we first adopt a systematic statistical approach to analyze what makes recommendations effective in practice and then propose ways of operationalizing these insights into novel recommendation algorithms. Our data analysis is based on log data of a large e-commerce site. It shows that various factors should be considered in parallel when selecting items for recommendation, including their match with the customer’s shopping interests in the previous sessions, the general popularity of the items in the last few days, as well as information about discounts. Based on these analyses we propose a novel algorithm that combines a neighborhood-based scheme with a deep neural network to predict the relevance of items for a given shopping session.     

Catalytic Flue Gas Treatment from Nitriding Processes

Efficient control and minimization of emissions from technical processes is of major concern in industrial development and process operation. The technical process in the focus of the present contribution is the nitriding process of metallic specimen. The ammonia content in nitriding process flue gases reaches up to 618 g·m^–3 (80 vol.‐%) and needs to be reduced to less than 30 mg·m^–3 (40 ppm) to fulfill present regulations. Exhaust gases from nitriding processes today are burnt in flares without emission control where fuels need to be added that produce additional exhaust gas components. The objective of this investigation is to develop an alternative gas cleaning route for nitriding processes based on catalytic dissociation of ammonia. The decomposition was studied for different catalysts at varying process conditions. With these results a dissociation pilot plant was successfully tested in a technical‐scale nitriding process.
