This paper employs the newly-developed convergence tests introduced by Phillips and Sul (Econometrica 75:1771–1855, 2007) to investigate convergence of real GDP per capita across Canadian provinces, as well as the transitional path of factors behind the convergence or divergence pattern. In contrast with previously published studies on Canadian provincial convergence, the analysis carried out in this paper allows for heterogeneous technology and reveals that Canadian provinces are characterized by distinct convergent clubs, that is, separate convergence clubs that converge to different steady states. We make the case that the findings presented in this paper are of utmost importance for Canadian policy-makers as they seek to develop effective policy measures to address regional economic disparities. 相似文献

The effect of the presence of gregarious fifth-instar nymphs on the sexual maturation of newly molted gregarious immature adult males and females of the desert locust S. gregaria was investigated by monitoring color changes (yellowing of body), sexual activity, aggregation–maturation pheromone titers (as measured by phenylacetonitrile levels in males), oocyte length, and oviposition time. Maturation was significantly delayed in adults that were reared together with fifth-instar nymphs (visual, tactile, and chemical signals present) with respect to all parameters measured. Male and female nymphs were equally effective in inducing this delay. Nymphs kept in an upper compartment of two-chamber cages (no visual or tactile contact possible) were similarly effective, but their feces were ineffective, suggesting the mediation of a volatile signal from the nymphs themselves. This was confirmed by examining the effect of volatiles trapped from nymphs and testing synthetic blends of previously identified nymphal aggregation pheromone components (C6, C8–C10 aliphatic aldehydes and acids, guaiacol, and phenol) on the sexual maturation of adults. These and previous studies suggest a dual role for nymphal volatiles as nymphal aggregants and adult maturation retardants, similar to the adult volatiles that are known as adult aggregants and maturation accelerants. The results are discussed in terms of the role of the two pheromone systems in synchronizing maturation of the gregarious adults. 相似文献

Mate location responses of male and female solitary-reared locusts that had either experienced no crowding or that had been crowded for varying periods were studied in a flatbed wind tunnel. Two hypotheses were explored: that both sexes of this phase of the locust participate in locating the other by using a combination of chemical and visual signals, and that individuals that experience some crowding (i.e., undergo varying levels of phase shift) can compete effectively with their solitary counterparts in mate location and mating. Our results confirm that both male and female solitarious locusts actively participate in mate location, although the former is the more aggressive partner. The responses of the insects are stronger when a visual cue is provided with the olfactory signal. Crowding of solitary-reared adults enhances their responsiveness to the other sex in the absence and presence of the visual cue. This phenomenon may constitute one of several mechanisms that are involved in recruiting solitary individuals into gregarizing groups and facilitating the spread of gregarious characters across a reproductively active solitarious population. 相似文献

电力系统现存的大部分仿真软件基本上使用的是面向功能或面向结构图方法开发的 ,由于这两种方法本身的局限性 ,对这些软件的功能增强和维护非常困难。为了克服这种困难 ,文中描述了采用面向对象方法在电力系统数字仿真建模中的应用 ,将面向对象程序设计方法中的突出优点 ,如封装性、继承性和多态性应用在电力系统仿真中。通过应用面向对象设计方法 ,使设计出的软件尽可能直接地描述现实世界 ,构造出模块化的、可重用的、维护性好的软件。 相似文献
