One reason for the limited attention to existential psychology in child treatment is the assumption that children are restricted in the amount of freedom and responsibility they can assume. However, current research on child development reveals that children actively influence their social and physical environment and hence begin from birth the process of self-determination. This article presents guidelines for implementing existential psychology with children derived from theoretical tenets and case study findings. Presents a model for conceptualizing 4 basic types of suicidality among substance abusers (avoidance of painful consequences, the depressive experience of "crashing," the threat of personal loss, and environmental strain) and offers practical tips for treating the problem. Four general forms of intervention are discussed: pacing the crisis encounter; desensitizing the patient's sense of desperation; talking frankly about the suicidality; and attending to one's own needs as a counselor. These crisis-intervention tips are intended to aid counselors in handling suicidality as it is manifested in substance-abusing populations. Tips and guidelines for suicidal risk assessment with drug and alcohol abusers are given. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

We examined differences in subjective age identification from adolescence to old age and the relation between subjective age and fears about one's own aging and life satisfaction. Using a questionnaire format, 188 men and women from 14 to 83 years of age made judgments about how old they felt, looked, acted, and desired to be. Respondents also answered questions about their personal fears of aging and present life satisfaction. Results revealed that individuals in their teens held older subjective age identities, whereas during the early adult years, individuals maintained same age identities. Across the middle and later adult years, individuals reported younger age identities, and women experienced younger age identities than men across these adults years. Results also revealed that discrepancies between subjective and actual age were associated with personal fears of aging and life satisfaction, especially in younger men and women. The emergence of antibiotic resistance among important foodborne pathogens like Escherichia coli O157:H7 has become an important issue with regard to food safety. In contrast to the case for Salmonella, antibiotic resistance has been slow in its development in E. coli O157:H7 despite the presence of mobile antibiotic resistance genes in other E. coli organisms that inhabit the same animal host. We set out to determine if rumen fluid influences the transfer of plasmid-mediated, antibiotic resistance to E. coli O157:H7. A commensal E. coli strain from a dairy cow was transformed with conjugative R plasmids and served as the donor in matings with naladixic acid-resistant E. coli O157:H7. R plasmids were transferred from the donor E. coli strain to E. coli O157:H7 in both Luria-Bertani (LB) broth and rumen fluid. R plasmids were transferred at a higher frequency to E. coli O157:H7 during 6 h of incubation in rumen fluid at rates comparable to those in LB broth, indicating that conditions in rumen fluid favor the transfer of the plasmids to E. coli O157. This finding suggests that the cow's rumen is a favorable environment for the genetic exchange of plasmids between microflora and resident E. coli O157:H7 in the bovine host. 相似文献

42 young (mean age 19.18 yrs) and 39 elderly (mean age 74.90 yrs) men and women made causal attributions for their own or for another person's hypothetical performance in the cognitive, physical, and social domains. When attributions for the same performance by young and elderly adults were compared, the results presented an unflattering view of the elderly, similar to the findings of T. O. Blank (1982) and G. Banziger and J. Drevenstedt (see record 1983-01031-001). In contrast, when attributions for good vs poor performance by the elderly were compared, a more favorable picture emerged: The elderly were more likely to be given credit for their good performance than to be blamed for their poor performance. These findings give reason to question the pervasiveness of the negative view of the elderly that has been presented in previous studies. Examined whether memory improved in a series of 10 student-performed tasks in three conditions administered to students who expected a posttest. The results indicated that the subjects in a rhyming mnemonic condition recalled significantly more of the student-performed tasks than did subjects in paraphrase or control conditions. In addition, subjects in a paraphrase condition recalled significantly more student-performed tasks than did subjects in the control condition. In Experiment 2, we did not use the rhyming mnemonic condition. Results confirmed those of Experiment 1. In Experiment 3, we contrasted conditions in which unrelated student-performed tasks were used as the to-be-remembered events with conditions in which the student-performed tasks made up an overall procedure. Results indicated that the type of task influenced recall. Overall conclusions suggest that encoding of student-performed tasks is strategic. Examined the effects of 70 parents' (mean age 28.69 yrs) perceptions of infant temperament on their own personality during the transition to parenthood. Two assessments were made about 16 wks apart for 22 primiparous couples (mean time prebirth 6.5 wks and mean time postpartum 10.5 wks) and for 13 childless couples. Ss were administered both global/trait and situation-specific/state measures, including the Eight-State Questionnaire and the Perception of Baby Temperament Instrument, in order to assess efficacy expectations, personal control, anxiety, and depression. New parents rated their infant's temperament along 4 dimensions: activity, rhythmicity, adaptability, and positive mood. The parent group showed greater change than the nonparent group on a number of measures. New parents who perceived their infant as having an easier temperament experienced more positive change, whereas new parents who perceived their infant as more difficult experienced more negative change, especially in personal control. Differential results were found for the 4 temperament dimensions, with adaptability and positive mood most frequently related to personality changes. The findings also indicate that fathers showed personality change in relation to their infant's temperament more often than mothers. Objective: Social-cognitive models have been used to explain health risk behaviors in numerous populations, including people with HIV. However, these models generally do not account for the influence of clinically significant psychological problems such as major depression. Design: This study examined whether a social-cognitive model would explain recent sexual transmission risk behavior among sexually active HIV-infected men who have sex with men (MSM) who meet or do not meet screening criteria for major depression. Main Outcome Measures: Participants (n = 403) completed self-report assessments of negative expectancy, social models, and self-efficacy (SE) related to condom use, as well as recent STRB and a screening measure for major depression. Multiple group modeling was used to examine whether condom use SE explained associations of negative expectancy and social models for condom use with recent STRB among participants who screened positive (n = 47) or negative (n = 356) for major depression. Results: The multiple group model fit the data well (χ2(36) = 30.55, p = .73; CFI = 1.00; RMSEA 相似文献

This study expanded on earlier attributional work with the elderly by examining age differences in the generality, as well as the locus and stability, of causes for bad events and the relationship of these attributions to self-reported health. 120 young (mean age?=?18.3 yrs) and elderly (mean age?=?74.39 yrs) adults rated the internality, stability, and globality of causes for good and bad events using the Attributional Style Questionnaire. Older adults were more likely than younger adults to see bad events as being due to stable and specific factors. Older adults who attributed negative outcomes to more internal and global factors also reported their health to be poorer than that of others.
