Scalar quantisation using a fast systolic array

A systolic array capable of outperforming a table look-up quantiser is proposed. The design has high throughput, can perform uniform or non-uniform quantisation and is suitable for VLSI or field programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation. In the latter case, the array can be used dynamically to both reduce latency and switch between quantisers without the need to reset look-up tables

Neocuproine, a selective Cu(I) chelator, and the relaxation of rat vascular smooth muscle by S-nitrosothiols

1. A study has been made of the effect of neocuproine, a specific Cu(I) chelator, on vasodilator responses of rat isolated perfused tail artery to two nitrosothiols: S-nitroso-N-acetyl-D,L-penicillamine (SNAP) and S-nitroso-glutathione (GSNO). 2. Bolus injections (10 microl) of SNAP or GSNO (10(-7)-10(-3) M) were delivered into the lumen of perfused vessels pre-contracted with sufficient phenylephrine (1-7 microM) to develop pressures of 100-120 mmHg. Two kinds of experiment were made: SNAP and GSNO were either (a) pre-mixed with neocuproine (10(-4) M) and then injected into arteries; or (b) vessels were continuously perfused with neocuproine (10(-5) M) and then injected with either pure SNAP or GSNO. 3. In each case, neocuproine significantly attenuated vasodilator responses to both nitrosothiols, although the nature of the inhibitory effect differed in the two types of experiment. We conclude that the ability of exogenous nitrosothiols to relax vascular smooth muscle in our ex vivo model is dependent upon a Cu(I) catalyzed process. Evidence is presented which suggests that a similar Cu(I)-dependent mechanism is responsible for the release of NO from endogenous nitrosothiols and that this process may assist in maintaining vasodilator tone in vivo.     

Systolic arrays for group explicit methods for solving first order hyperbolic equations

In this paper, systolic techniques for the simulation of the Group Explicitmethod for parabolic equations by systolic array data structures using the Soft Systolic algorithm paradigm have been extended to include hyperbolic equations of first order. In particular, the Group Explicit Complete (GEC) strategy can be used as generic array construction for other simple schemes and for comput ations on large intervals. The easy form of the finite difference approximation to the hyperbolic equation res ults in a simpler and hence faster and more area efficient basic cell.     

Romberg integration using systolic arrays

A systolic array is presented to improve numerical approximations to integrals using Richardson's extrapolation procedure in the form of Romberg integration. Two designs are presented, the first is an intuitive linear systolic array, the second, a systolic ring using approximately 1/3 of the cells of the first array. Both systolic arrays have a computation time of 3n cycles, which is a significant improvement on the O(n²) steps required to construct the extrapolation table sequentially.     

Fast triangularization of a symmetric tridiagonal matrix

A simple linear systolic array is presented for triangularizing a symmetric tridiagonal matrix by Gaussian Elimination using nearest neighbor pivoting. The array consists of three cells requiring an area bounded by four simple inner product cells. The design can compute the elimination in time 2_n + k₁ for the simple point case and using an implicit 2*2 block structuring of data produces an almost eliminated form in time n + k₂. The implicit result can be fully eliminated by only a constant number of extra operations independent of the matrix order (n), where k, and k2 are constants.     

Phospholipids of Lactobacillus spp

Lactobacillus phospholipid molecular species were analyzed by mass spectrometry. Prominent anions were consistent with presence of the phosphatidylglycerols PG(37:2), PG(36:2), PG(35:1), PG(34:1), and PG(33:1). Diglycosyldiacylglycerol molecular species were also observed, although nitrogen-containing phospholipids were absent. An anion of m/z 759 was derived from an apparently novel type of lipid.     

Simultaneous Gas Storage and Catalytic Gas Production Using Zeolites—A New Concept for Extending Lifetime Gas Delivery

Copper containing MCM-41 materials can be used to both store gaseous nitric oxide and to catalytically produce nitric oxide from nitrite. The active species for the reaction is copper (I). Addition of cysteine to the solution in contact with the material has different effects depending on how much Cu(I) is present. This is a new method of extending the lifetime of gas delivery from a gas storage material.     

Generalized honeycomb torus is Hamiltonian

Generalized honeycomb torus is a candidate for interconnection network architectures, which includes honeycomb torus, honeycomb rectangular torus, and honeycomb parallelogramic torus as special cases. Existence of Hamiltonian cycle is a basic requirement for interconnection networks since it helps map a “token ring” parallel algorithm onto the associated network in an efficient way. Cho and Hsu [Inform. Process. Lett. 86 (4) (2003) 185-190] speculated that every generalized honeycomb torus is Hamiltonian. In this paper, we have proved this conjecture.
