The biochemical basis for considering tannins as digestion inhibitors has been reexamined. Both stimulatory and inhibitory effects of tannins on tryptic hydrolysis are reported. We show how stimulation may result from tannin-induced structural changes in the substrate protein, effectively denaturing it. The surfactant and bile constituent cholic acid also produced similar stimulatory effects. These results have considerable implications for normal digestive physiology as well as for the impact of tannins on argicultural and natural herbivore populations.  相似文献

Eight zidovudine-experienced subjects received zidovudine and didanosine for 30 weeks followed by 30 weeks of didanosine monotherapy. At study entry, plasma from 4 subjects had human immunodeficiency virus RNA pol T215Y/F mutant and 4 had codon 215 wild type. All 8 subjects had non-syncytium-inducing virus phenotype. Sustained 10-fold decreases in plasma RNA levels were seen only in subjects who initially had 215 wild type RNA, despite the development of a T215Y/F mutation during combination therapy. Virologic and immunologic benefits were maintained in this group with didanosine monotherapy. No subject developed a pol L74V codon mutation. Significant differences in plasma virus load and CD4 cell responses were seen in this zidovudine-didanosine combination pilot study relative to codon 215 genotype.  相似文献

Acting simultaneously or sequentially, plants encounter multiple stresses from combined abiotic and biotic factors that result in decreased growth and internal reallocation of resources. The plant stress hypothesis predicts that environmental stresses on plants decrease plant resistance to insect herbivory by altering biochemical source–sink relationships and foliar chemistry, leading to more palatable food. Such changes in the nutritional landscape for insects may facilitate insect population outbreaks during periods of moderate stress on host plants. We examined the plant stress hypothesis with field experiments in continental grassland (USA) using the C4 grass Bouteloua gracilis. Water, nitrogen fertilizer, and herbivory from the grass-feeding grasshopper Ageneotettix deorum were manipulated. Combined stresses from water and mineral-N in the soil decreased plant growth and altered foliar percent total N (TN) and percent total nonstructural carbohydrate (TNC) concentrations in an additive fashion. Grasshopper herbivory affected final biomass only in dry years; plants compensated for tissue loss when rainfall was abundant. Foliar TN and TNC concentrations were dynamic with respect to variable climatic conditions and treatment combinations, showing significant interactions. Grasshopper herbivory had its greatest impact on TN or TNC in dry years, interacting with other forms of stress. Herbivory as a single factor had strong effects on TNC in years with normal precipitation, but not in a dry year. Performance (developmental rate and survival) by the grasshoppers Phoetaliotes nebrascensis and A. deorum were not greatly affected by plant stress in a manner consistent with the plant stress hypothesis.  相似文献

This paper demonstrates the design of an integrated fourth-order bandpass sigma-delta converter, which is capable of digitizing a 200-kHz band at 200 MHz with 11-bit accuracy. The converter has been successfully fabricated in a 50-GHz SiGe bipolar technology, and the modulator consumes 21 mA at 3 V. Levels of phenolic secondary metabolites in the leaves of four west African rain-forest plants,Acacia pennata, Cynometra leonensis, Diopyros thomasii, andTrema guineensis, were correlated with incident light intensity at both the inter- and intraindividual level. Enhanced phenolic levels under high light intensity appeared to be due to production of both polyphenolics (condensed and hydrolyzable tannins) and simple phenolics. InTrema guineensis, where it is possible to separate leaves in terms of both their age and the light incident upon them, condensed tannin production progressed differently during the development of sun and shade leaves, suggesting continuing production of new oligomers in the former but not in the latter. The results of this study suggest that the production of phenolics in relation to variation in incident light is a finely tuned process, which must be explained in terms of plant physiology and intermediate metabolism rather than in terms of resource allocation or a direct response to herbivory.  相似文献

The effect of changes in medullary extracellular tonicity on mRNA expression for aldose reductase (AR), sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH), Na+/Cl-/betaine (BGT) and Na+/myo-inositol (SMIT) cotransporter in different kidney zones was studied using Northern blot analysis and non-radioactive in situ hybridization in four groups of rats: controls, acute diuresis (the loop diuretic furosemide was administered), chronic diuresis (5 days of diuresis), and antidiuresis [5 days of diuresis followed by 24 h deamino-Cys1, d-Arg8 vasopressin (dDAVP)]. Acute administration of the loop diuretic furosemide significantly reduced AR, SMIT and BGT gene expression in the inner and outer medulla compared with controls. Administration of dDAVP to chronically diuretic rats raised the expression of these three mRNAs in the inner but not the outer medulla compared with the chronically diuretic rats. None of these alterations in medullary tonicity significantly changed SDH expression. The in situ hybridization studies showed AR, BGT and SMIT mRNAs to be expressed in both epithelial and non-epithelial cells of the outer and inner medulla. The various cell types (epithelial, endothelial and interstitial cells) differed in their expression pattern and intensity of AR, SDH, BGT and SMIT mRNA, but the inner medullary cells responded uniformly to a decrease in extracellular tonicity with a reduction, and to an increase with enhancement of their AR, BGT and SMIT expression.  相似文献
