Coat colors in the chestnut horse, the yellow Labrador retriever, the red fox, and one type of yellow mouse are due to recessive alleles at the extension locus. Similarly, dominant alleles at this locus are often responsible for dark coat colors in mammals, such as the melanic form of the leopard, Panthera pardus. We show here that the murine extension locus encodes the melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH) receptor. In mice, the recessive yellow allele (e) results from a frameshift that produces a prematurely terminated, nonfunctioning receptor. The sombre (Eso and Eso-3J) and tobacco darkening (Etob) alleles, which both have dominant melanizing effects, results from point mutations that produce hyperactive MSH receptors. The Eso-3J receptor is constitutively activated, while the Etob receptor remains hormone responsive and produces a greater activation of its effector, adenylyl cyclase, than does the wild-type allele. 相似文献

In order to characterize the role of carnitine during metabolic stress, we prospectively determined carnitine profiles in plasma and urine on admission, days 2, 5, 10 and 15, among 28 critically ill children free of any known conditions associated with secondary carnitine deficiency. More than 25% of plasma and 50% of urinary carnitine measurements were abnormal; 96% (27/28) of patients displayed on at least one occasion an abnormal [< -2 SD or > +2 SD] carnitine value in plasma. Three children had extremely low [< 10 micromol/l] free carnitine (FC) levels in plasma. Plasma esterified and FC levels on admission were not related to the risk of mortality [PRISM score], to muscle lysis [CK values], and to the caloric intake. Levels of FC and esterified carnitine in plasma were unrelated to those measured in urine. Conclusion: Abnormal plasma and urine carnitine measurements are frequently found in critically ill children; the biological significance of these perturbations remains unclear. Caution must be exercised before concluding that an abnormal carnitine value is indicative of an underlying hereditary metabolic disorder in this population. 相似文献

In this paper an experimental and semi-analytical technique is described that provides a method of estimating a macroscopic drying kinetics curve and internal moisture content profiles is described. Moisture gradients and the time evolution of these gradients are analysed as a function of the air drying parameters (dry-bulb, wet-bulb temperature and the velocity) and the product parameters (thickness and density). The film-boiling chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) process is a fast process developed for composite material fabrication, and especially carbon/carbon composites. In order to help define optimal conditions, a local 1D model has been developed to study the densification front which establishes itself during the processing of a carbon/carbon fibrous preform. The model features heat conduction, precursor gas diffusion, densification reactions and structural evolution of the porous medium. The effects of total mass flux, Thiele modulus, porous medium geometry on front behavior parameters such as width, velocity and residual porosity are presented as semi-analytical correlations. An existence criterion is produced, which involves a minimal heat flux. Comparison between process-scale experiments and simulation is then possible by inserting the semi-analytical results achieved in the local study of the front into a light numerical model involving the entire preform. A regression model approach using a normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) has the potential for estimating crop production in East Africa. However, before production estimation can become a reality, the underlying model assumptions and statistical nature of the sample data (NDVI and crop production) must be examined rigorously. Annual maize production statistics from 1982-90 for 36 agricultural districts within Kenya were used as the dependent variable; median area NDVI (independent variable) values from each agricultural district and year were extracted from the annual maximum NDVI data set. The input data and the statistical association of NDVI with maize production for Kenya were tested systematically for the following items: (1) homogeneity of the data when pooling the sample, (2) gross data errors and influence points, (3) serial (time) correlation, (4) spatial autocorrelation and (5) stability of the regression coefficients. The results of using a simple regression model with NDVI as the only independent variable are encouraging (r 0.75, p 0.05) and illustrate that NDVI can be a responsive indicator of maize production, especially in areas of high NDVI spatial variability, which coincide with areas of production variability in Kenya. 相似文献

Dynamic wetting and heat transfer during the start of solidification were studied with the help of molten aluminum droplets
falling from a crucible onto a copper substrate. A high-speed camera captured the change in the spreading droplet’s geometry,
while thermocouple, inserted inside the substrate, allowed a heat transfer analysis to be performed. Droplet spreading factors
and interfacial heat fluxes were then used to, respectively, characterize dynamic wetting and heat transfer for the various
experimental conditions explored. These were: (1) effects of chemical composition of the aluminum alloy, (2) initial temperature
of the substrate, (3) surface roughness of the substrate, and (4) composition of the gaseous atmosphere. The experiments were
all carried out in gaseous atmospheres containing oxygen in sufficient amount to form oxide skins at the surface of the droplets
and the substrates. The results showed instances where an improvement in the dynamic wetting was accompanied by an increase
in heat transfer during the early stages of solidification but this was not systematic. In these cases where a positive correlation
was not observed, it was postulated this was caused by factors such as variations in the oxidation at the surface of the substrates
and the droplets as well as gas trapped at the interface between the droplets and the substrates.
