This article describes 2 white male patients with probable splenic crisis caused by sickle cell trait after travel from sea level to a moderately high altitude. Both did well with return to lower altitude and conservative treatment. Although rare, this entity should be considered in patients presenting to the emergency department with left-sided chest or abdominal pain after travel to moderate or high altitude.  相似文献

Late health effects of exposure to atomic bomb radiation have been evaluated in survivors. A cohort of 120 321 people has been followed since 1950 for mortality, including the cause of death using the Japanese population registry system (Life Span Study), and for cancer incidence using population-based cancer registries. Findings have included a markedly increased risk of leukaemia several years after the exposure, increased risk of various malignant tumours several decades after the exposure and, more recently, findings of increased rates of non-cancer diseases such as cardiovascular diseases.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to elucidate the clinicopathological significance of p53 overexpression in elderly patients with colorectal cancer. p53 positivity for elderly patients and control was 41% and 57%, respectively. There was a significant difference between these two groups. Regarding the rate of hematogenic metastases, there was no significant difference between patients with positive for p53 and negative for p53 in the elderly group (44% vs 39%), on the other hand, there was a significant difference between patients with positive for p53 and negative for p53 in the control group (70% vs 48%). Regarding prognosis, there was no significant difference between patients with positive for p53 and negative for p53 in the elderly group (73.3% vs 72%), on the other hand, there was a significant difference between patients with positive for p53 and negative for p53 in the control group (51.2% vs 68.7%). These results suggest that the significance of p53 overexpression was negligible in elderly patients with colorectal cancer.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated the activation of p42 extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK2) during renal regeneration after HgCl2-induced acute renal failure (ARF) in rat. ERK2 activation was observed at 5 and 29 hr after HgCl2 injection, respectively. The tyrosine phosphorylation of hepatocyte growth factor receptor (c-MET) occurred between 2.5 and 5 hr after the treatment. On the other hand, the phosphorylation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) was transiently observed at 29 hr after the injection. The peak of ornithine decarboxylase activity as a marker of G1 phase was at 10 hr, and subsequently the labeling index of proliferating cell nuclear antigen as a marker of S phase increased at 53 hr. These results indicate that the repetitive activation of ERK2 related to the phosphorylation of c-MET and EGFR is required for the renal regeneration in HgCl2-induced ARF of rat.  相似文献

To measure dose distribution for X- and gamma rays simply and accurately, a tissue-equivalent thermoluminescent (TL) sheet-type dosemeter and reader system were developed. The TL sheet is composed of LiF:Mg,Cu,P and ETFE polymer, and the thickness is 0.2 mm. For the TL reading, a square heating plate, 20 cm on each side, was developed, and the temperature distribution was measured with an infrared thermal imaging camera. As a result, linearity within 2% and the homogeneity within 3% were confirmed. The TL signal emitted is detected using a CCD camera and displayed as a spatial dose distribution. Irradiation using synchrotron radiation between 10 and 100 keV and (60)Co gamma rays showed that the TL sheet dosimetry system was promising for radiation dose mapping for various purposes.  相似文献

We demonstrate the multiazimuth observation (360 degrees in principle) of InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) by means of a 300 kV scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), where both cross-sectional and plan-view observations are performed on a single STEM specimen for the first time. A cylindrical specimen with a diameter of 200-300 nm including the QD layer inside along the rotation axis was fabricated by the focused ion beam (FIB) technique, with the application of a newly developed mesa-cutting method to adjust the position and angle of the QD layer precisely. The 360 degrees STEM observation is realized by mounting the cylindrical specimen on a holder equipped with a specimen-rotation mechanism. High potential of 3D-STEM observation is briefly presented by showing high contrast images of QDs, dark field images, and moire fringes with various incident angles.  相似文献

Human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) can be applied in patient-specific cell therapy to regenerate lost tissue or organ function. Anisotropic control of the structural organization in the newly generated bone matrix is pivotal for functional reconstruction during bone tissue regeneration. Recently, we revealed that hiPSC-derived osteoblasts (hiPSC-Obs) exhibit preferential alignment and organize in highly ordered bone matrices along a bone-mimetic collagen scaffold, indicating their critical role in regulating the unidirectional cellular arrangement, as well as the structural organization of regenerated bone tissue. However, it remains unclear how hiPSCs exhibit the cell properties required for oriented tissue construction. The present study aimed to characterize the properties of hiPSCs-Obs and those of their focal adhesions (FAs), which mediate the structural relationship between cells and the matrix. Our in vitro anisotropic cell culture system revealed the superior adhesion behavior of hiPSC-Obs, which exhibited accelerated cell proliferation and better cell alignment along the collagen axis compared to normal human osteoblasts. Notably, the oriented collagen scaffold stimulated FA formation along the scaffold collagen orientation. This is the first report of the superior cell adhesion behavior of hiPSC-Obs associated with the promotion of FA assembly along an anisotropic scaffold. These findings suggest a promising role for hiPSCs in enabling anisotropic bone microstructural regeneration.  相似文献

We report on neurocomputing performed with real Euglena cells confined in micro-aquariums, on which two-dimensional optical feedback is applied using the Hopfield–Tank algorithm. Trace momentum, an index of swimming activity of Euglena cells, is used as the input/output signal for neurons in the neurocomputation. Feedback as blue-light illumination results in temporal changes in trace momentum according to the photophobic reactions of Euglena. Combinatorial optimization for a four-city traveling salesman problem is achieved with a high occupation ratio of the best solutions. Two characteristics of Euglena-based neurocomputing desirable for combinatorial optimization are elucidated: (1) attaining one of the best solutions to the problem, and (2) searching for a number of solutions via dynamic transition between the best solutions. Mechanisms responsible for the two characteristics are analyzed in terms of network energy, photoreaction ratio, and dynamics/statistics of Euglena movements. The spontaneous fluctuation in input/output signals and reduction in photoreaction ratio were found to be key factors in producing characteristic (1), while the photo-insensitive Euglena cells or the accidental evacuation of cells from non-illuminated areas causes characteristic (2). Furthermore, we show that the photophobic reactions of Euglena involves various survival strategies such as adaptation to blue-light or awakening from dormancy, which can extend the performance of Euglena-based neurocomputing toward deadlock avoidance or program-less adaptation. Finally, two approaches for achieving a high-speed Euglena-inspired Si-based computation are described.  相似文献
