Analysis of ``dot product space'' shape descriptions

A convenient representation for blob-like figures in an image consists of the orientation, length, and width of a bounding rect-angle. One fast algorithm for producing such a bounding rectangle is based upon a dot product space. The analysis of the dot product space shape representation is improved to handle certain pathological cases, and it is shown how to generalize this analysis to accommodate different criteria for the goodness of the representation.

Theoretical design for 120 GHz semiconductor junction circulators: effects of different numbers of terms in the Green's function

A theoretical analysis of the predicted performance and field distributions for semiconductor junction circulators is based on Bosma's Green's function approach which involves a summation of infinite series in the mathematical derivation. The effects are considered of taking a different number of terms in the series, looking at three different circulators centred at 120 GHz. The narrowband semiconductor circulators show a similar effect to the ferrite junction circulator because the field distributions inside the semiconductor discs can be approximated by only considering the dominant modes. However, there is no dominant mode in the broadband circulator and the higher order modes play an important role in the operation of this circulator. In order to obtain a precise representation of the circulation effects inside both narrowband and broadband circulators, at least up to the 6th term, or 18 terms in all, are required to be added in the summation of Green's functions.     

Basis enrichment and solid–fluid coupling for model‐reduced fluid simulation

We present several enhancements to model‐reduced fluid simulation that allow improved simulation bases and two‐way solid–fluid coupling. Specifically, we present a basis enrichment scheme that allows us to combine data‐driven or artistically derived bases with more general analytic bases derived from Laplacian eigenfunctions. We handle two‐way solid–fluid coupling in a time‐splitting fashion—we alternately timestep the fluid and rigid body simulators, while taking into account the effects of the fluid on the rigid bodies and vice versa. We employ the vortex panel method to handle solid–fluid coupling and use dynamic pressure to compute the effect of the fluid on rigid bodies. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Mild traumatic brain injury--the Fife perspective

Excretion was studied of catecholamines and diphenilamine (DOPA) in 310 patients with carcinoma of the stomach and large intestine and 43 patients with non-malignant diseases. The oncological patients showed decrease in activity of the mediator link of the sympathoadrenal system (SAS) as well as its reserves but there was no association with sex, age, location or histological structure. Three types of SAS functioning were identified, such as compensation, overstrain and emaciation. Surgical intervention led to activation of the hormonal link and exhaustion of the system's reserves. Two kinds of sympathoadrenal response to stress were described--adequate and inadequate. In the former type, phases of stress remain as they are, unchanged, as are time periods of formation thereof, while under the latter one time periods of the phases formation or formation thereof get disordered.     

Structural characterization of atomically regulated nanocrystals formed within single-walled carbon nanotubes using electron microscopy

The structural chemistry of nanoscale materials encapsulated within single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) is reviewed. SWNTs form atomically thin channels within a restricted diameter range, and their internal van der Waals surfaces regulate the growth behavior of encapsulated crystals in a precise fashion, leading to atomically regulated growth. The structural properties of these systems are largely dictated by the structural chemistry of the bulk material, although significant deviations from bulk structures are often observed, with lower surface coordinations and substantial lattice distortions.     

Survey of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Departments in the U. S.

As a part of a major curriculum study undertaken by the IEEE Computer Society Education Committee in the fall of 1974, a subcommittee surveyed existing curriculum and equipment in both computer science and electrical engineering departments to assess the current situation. The survey was also intended to update the COSINE survey of electrical engineering departments conducted in the fall of 1972.1     

A fast stiffness formulation for finite element analysis of two-dimensional solids

This paper describes and efficient method for computing two-dimensional element stiffness matrices. It is a generalization of the algorithm given by Taylor. ¹Theory is developed for elements which are loaded under plane stress, plane strain or axisymmetric conditions, and two FORTRAN IV subroutines are included. These subroutines, which are presented in a modular form, are applicable to any type of serendipity, Lagrangian or triangular element, and may be incorporated into a user's library. Alternatively, if desired, the relevant code may be embedded directly into existing stiffness generation routines.
