Reliability as Tool for Hydraulic Network Planning   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This paper presents a methodology to evaluate the reliability of water distribution systems that can be used in the design phase and for identifying repair works to be carried out on existing systems. The methodology is based on the statistical analysis of dimensionless performance indices (hydraulic performance indices) derived from a large number of simulations of various water system demand scenarios and∕or operating conditions. The hydraulic reliability index is assumed as the probability that, under a given operating condition, the hydraulic performance index will be above a certain threshold. Finally, the system's overall reliability (mechanical + hydraulic) is estimated using the overall reliability index, which is defined by the weighted mean of the hydraulic performance indices obtained for the various operating conditions. A case study using this methodology shows the concrete possibilities of applying this approach to a wide spectrum of cases, and the small influence on overall system reliability normally exerted by such events as the failure of links, pipes, and valves.  相似文献

It has been well documented that water production in PEM fuel cells occurs in discrete locations, resulting in the formation and growth of discrete droplets on the gas diffusion layer (GDL) surface within the gas flow channels (GFCs). This research uses a simulated fuel cell GFC with three transparent walls in conjunction with a high speed fluorescence photometry system to capture videos of dynamically deforming droplets. Such videos clearly show that the droplets undergo oscillatory deformation patterns. Although many authors have previously investigated the air flow induced droplet detachment, none of them have studied these oscillatory modes. The novelty of this work is to process and analyze the recorded videos to gather information on the droplets induced oscillation. Plots are formulated to indicate the dominant horizontal and vertical deformation frequency components over the range of sizes of droplets from formation to detachment. The system is also used to characterize droplet detachment size at a variety of channel air velocities. A simplified model to explain the droplet oscillation mechanism is provided as well.  相似文献

The replacement of existing pipes is a strategy for the rehabilitation of water distribution networks that is frequently adopted by water companies. Usually, the optimal choice of the pipes diameter is a difficult optimization task, because limited budgets are available. In order to support the selection of a rehabilitation strategy, surrogate reliability measures are often used as an indirect measure of the water distribution system hydraulic performance. Among others, the resilience and entropy indices have attracted considerable interest because they both represent a measure of the network robustness. In the present work, a comparison between these indices is provided in the framework of the optimal rehabilitation of an existing network under limited budget constraint. The resilience and entropy indices are applied to the case of a realistic water distribution network in an extended period simulation framework. Several values of the maximum budget allocable for rehabilitation are considered, and hydraulic calculations are undertaken by means of a pressure driven approach within a modified EPANET 2 environment. The effectiveness of the two surrogate reliability measures is demonstrated by an a-posteriori reliability assessment.  相似文献

The detection of internal defects in composite materials with non-destructive techniques is an important requirement both for quality checks during the production phase and in-service inspection during maintenance operations. Visual inspection allows only the analysis of surface characteristics of materials and, then, if internal faults occur inside composite structures, a deeper analysis is required. A comparison between the reactions of different materials to ultrasonic signals can be used to highlight the difference in the internal structures and also to detect the depth position of these anomalies. However, ultrasonic data are difficult to interpret since they require the analysis of a continuous signal for each point of the material under consideration. An automatic procedure is necessary to manage large data sets and to extract significant differences between them.In this paper, we address the problem of automatic inspection of composite materials using an ultrasonic technique. We consider two main steps for interpreting ultrasonic data: the pre-processing technique necessary to normalize the signals of composite structures with different thicknesses and the classification techniques used to compare the ultrasonic signals and detect classes of similar points.  相似文献

Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) performance significantly depends on electrodes water content. Liquid water emerging from the Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL) micro-channels can form droplets, films or slugs in the Gas Flow Channel (GFC). In the regime of droplets formation, the interaction with the gas flow leads to an oscillating mechanisms that is fundamental to study the detachment from the GDL surface. In this work, a numerical model of a droplet growing on the GDL surface is developed to describe the interaction between droplet and gas flow. Therefore, a lumped force balance is enforced to determine the center of mass motion law. Oscillation frequencies during growth and at detachment are found as a function of droplet size. The model is also exploited to find the relationship between droplet critical detachment size and gas velocity. The numerical results are compared with the experimental data previously published by the authors as well as with other experimental results available in the literature. The matching between the numerical and experimental data is very good. The low computational burden and the conciseness of the proposed approach make the model suitable for applications such as control and optimization strategies development to enhance PEMFC performance. Additionally, the model can be exploited to implement monitoring and diagnostic algorithm as well.  相似文献

PULSE: An Adaptive, Incentive-Based, Unstructured P2P Live Streaming System   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Large-scale live media streaming is a challenge for traditional server-based approaches. To appropriately support big audiences, broadcasters must be able to allocate huge bandwidth and computational resources. The costs involved with such an infrastructure exclude all but the established content producers from exploiting the Internet as a distribution medium. Publishers of not-yet-popular content, unless they manage to properly predict their maximum audience size, will likely fail to dimension correctly their broadcast infrastructure. Peer-to-peer systems for live streaming allow the users to support content distribution by contributing their unused resources: this increases the scalability of the content distribution while reducing at the same time the economical burden on the streaming provider. This paper presents and evaluates PULSE, an unstructured mesh-based peer-to-peer system designed to support live streaming to large audiences under the arbitrary resource availability as is typically the case for the Internet. PULSE is a highly dynamic system: it constantly optimizes its mesh of data connections using a feedback-driven peer selection strategy that is based on pairwise incentives. We evaluate the behavior of PULSE under realistic scenarios via simulation and emulation, and present the advantages of our approach, namely a best-effort response to system-wide resource scarcity, high resilience to node churn, and good hop-count properties of the average data distribution paths.  相似文献

Water loss is an issue that affect Water Distribution Systems (WDSs) very often, especially when aged and high pressure occurs. Pressure reduction valves (PRVs) can be used as devices to reduce as much as possible the water losses within the network. Indeed, for a given number of PRVs, the daily volume of water lost from the network can be reduced minimizing the pressure through a proper choice of valve positions as well as their settings. In this paper, a methodology for the optimal number, positioning and setting of PRVs is presented. In the proposed methodology, a genetic algorithm is coupled with a physical modelling of leakage from joints and a simplified and yet realistic hydraulic simulation of the WDS. The proposed methodology is demonstrated using two WDSs examples. Comparisons with a more extreme and complicated hydraulic modelling, already proposed by authors in previous work, are also performed in the first case study in order to validate the proposed methodology. These comparisons demonstrate that the methodology proposed in this work performs fairly well when compared to similar approach that uses a more sophisticated hydraulic model. As a consequence, it revealed to be a good tool for the optimal positioning and sizing of PRVs within WDS aimed at reducing the background leakages even when the WDS is characterized by complex geometry and topology.  相似文献

We describe three siblings from an Italian family affected by an autosomal recessive spinocerebellar degeneration. Gait ataxia, presenting between 38 and 45 years, was the first symptom in all three patients. Dysarthria, dysmetria, brisk tendon reflexes, extensor plantar response, and scoliosis were constant features. Disease progression was slow. Electrophysiologic studies demonstrated a slight reduction in sural nerve sensory action potential in only one patient. Analysis of GAA expansion within the X25 gene showed that patients were homozygous for the expansion, with the shorter expanded allele ranging from 120 to 156 triplets. The size of the GAA expansion may be smaller than we previously described. Such minimal expansions may result in atypical forms of Friedreich's ataxia.  相似文献

Since the model plays an important role in diagnosing solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system, this paper proposes a review of existing SOFC models for model-based diagnosis of SOFC stack and system. Three categories of modelling based on the white-, the black- and the grey-box approaches are introduced. The white-box model includes two types, i.e. physical model and equivalent circuit model based on EIS technique. The black-box model is based on artificial intelligence and its realisation relies mainly on experimental data. The grey-box model is more flexible: it is a physical representation but with some parts being modelled empirically. Validation of models is discussed and a hierarchical modelling approach involving all of three modelling methods is briefly mentioned, which gives an overview of the design for implementing a generic diagnostic tool on SOFC system.  相似文献
