Performance related problems play a key role in the Software Development Process (SDP). In particular an early integration of performance specifications in the SDP has been recognized during last years as an effective approach to speed up the production of high quality and reliable software. In this context we defined and implemented a technique for automatically evaluating performance aspects of UML software architectures. To achieve this goal the starting UML model of the software architecture under exam has been mapped into a performance domain afterwards analyzed. The performance indices are inserted in the UML model exploiting the OMG Profile for Schedulability, Performance and Time Specification standard. However, to really automate the process, it was mandatory to specify the UML software representation by fixing semantic rules. The goal of this paper is the formalization of the model representation, characterizing the syntax and the semantics through which specifying performance requirements and behaviors into UML models in order to be compliant with the technique we implemented.  相似文献

Java has begun to open up new possibilities for accessing applications on the Web. With Java, developers can write applications as applets and insert them into Web pages. The user can then retrieve and execute them with local computing resources. We show how developers can use this feature to create a network computing platform that lets Web users share applications not specifically devised for network use, including those that are computationally intensive. With our approach, the network is not involved as long as the user executes operations on the graphical interface, which is executed locally on the client. Only when users require some computational response from the server do they need to access it. Access is straightforward; authorized users can access the application from any node connected with the Internet as long as they have a Java-enabled Web browser. The relative simplicity of access to digital communications nowadays and the simultaneous increase in the available bandwidth are leading to the definition of new telematic services, mainly oriented towards multimedia applications and interactivity with the user. In the near future, a decisive role will be played in this scenario by the providers of interactive multimedia services of the on-demand type, which will guarantee the end user a high degree of flexibility, speed and efficiency. In this paper, some of the technical aspects regarding these service providers are dealt with, paying particular attention to the problems of storing information and managing service requests. More specifically, the paper presents and evaluates a new storage technique based on the use of disk array technology, which can manage both typical multimedia connections and traditional requests. The proposed architecture is based on the joint use of the partial dynamic declustering and the information dispersal algorithm, which are employed for the allocation and retrieval of the data stored on the disk array. We also define efficient strategies for request management in such a way as to meet the time constraints imposed by multimedia sessions and guarantee good response times for the rest of the traffic. The system proposed is then analyzed using a simulation approach.  相似文献

The Millimeter Wave Atmospheric Sounder (MAS) will be launched in the spring of 1992 as part of the ATLAS 1 (Atmospheric Laboratory for Application and Science) mission. Using passive limb-scanning millimeter-wave radiometry, it will sense the thermal emission produced by ozone at 184 GHz, water vapor at 183 GHz, chlorine monoxide at 204 GHz, and oxygen (for retrieval of temperature and pressure) at 60 GHz. From these observations, concentration profiles of these gases throughout the middle atmosphere will be made. The B‐ISDN will carry a variety of traffic types: the Variable Bit Rate traffic (VBR), of which compressed video is an example, Continuous Bit Rate traffic (CBR), of which telemetry is an example, Data traffic, and Available Bit Rate traffic (ABR) that represents aggregate data traffic with very limited guarantees on quality. Of these, VBR and CBR have timing constraints and need synchronous bandwidth; data traffic is relatively delay insensitive. In this paper, we consider the VBR, Data and ABR traffic types and obtain the cumulative distribution function (cdf) of the queueing delay experienced by a burst of ABR traffic in the output buffer of an ATM switch. The cdf is used to trade off buffer loss probabilities against deadline violation probabilities through adjusting the buffer size and (delay) deadline values. Large buffers result in low losses but queueing delays can become excessive and cause a high level of deadline violations. Both losses and violations are detrimental and an operating point must be chosen to achieve a balance. In this paper we study the nature of the trade off. We develop a stochastic Petri net model assuming periodic burst arrivals for VBR and Poisson arrival processes for the Data and ABR traffic types at the burst level, and solve the model analytically (numerically) using a decomposition approach. This decomposition, along with the inherent decomposability of the tagged customer approach for obtaining the cdf opens up a possibility of carrying out fast computations using a parallel machine for selecting the operating point each time that a call is admitted. Reliability/availability evaluation is an important, often indispensable, step in designing and analyzing (critical) systems, whose importance is constantly growing. When the complexity of a system is high, dynamic effects can arise or become significant. The system might be affected by dependent, cascade, on-demand and/or common cause failures, its units could interfere (load sharing, inter/sequence-dependency), and so on. It is also of great interest to evaluate redundancy and maintenance policies but, since dynamic behaviors usually do not satisfy the stochastic independence assumption, notations such as reliability block diagrams (RBDs), fault trees (FTs) or reliability graphs (RGs) become approximated/simplified techniques, unable to capture dynamic-dependent behaviors. To overcome such problem we developed a new formalism derived from RBDs: the dynamic RBDs (DRBDs). In this paper we explain how the DRBDs notation is able to adequately model and therefore analyze dynamic-dependent behaviors and complex systems. Particular emphasis is given to the modeling and the analysis phases, from both the theoretical and the practical point of views. Several case studies of dynamic-dependent systems, selected from literature and related to different application fields, are proposed. In this way we also compare the DRBDs approach with other methodologies, demonstrating its effectiveness.  相似文献

Femtosecond laser-tissue interactions: Retinal injury studies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We report the first study of laser-tissue interaction in the femtosecond time regime. Retinal damage thresholds and mechanisms produced by exposure to high-intensity femtosecond laser pulses were investigated in chinchilla grey rabbits. Exposures were performed using single laser pulses of 80 fs duration at 625 nm. ED50injury thresholds of 0.75 and 4.5 μJ were measured using fluorescein angiographic and ophthalmoscopic visibility criteria evaluating 204 laser exposures. Ultrastructural studies including light and electron microscopy were performed on selected lesions. Results suggest that the primary energy deposition in the retina occurs in melanin, However, in contrast to laser injuries produced by longer pulses, exposures of more than 100 × threshold in the50-100 muJ range did not produce significantly more severe lesions or hemorrhage. This suggests the presence of a nonlinear damage limiting mechanics in tissue exposed to femtosecond laser pulses.  相似文献
