In this work, a low temperature aqueous chemical growth methodology was used for the fabrication of CuO nanostructures. The as-synthesised nanostructures were then elaborately characterised by number of analytical techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The obtained nanostructures were observed to possess interlaced rice-shaped structural features with the length and width of individual rice determined to be in the range of 200–300 nm and 50–100 nm respectively. The unique nanostructures when utilised as electrode material exhibited excellent electro-catalytic potential towards oxidation of hydrazine in alkaline media. The excellent conductive of CuO added by the high surface area of obtained nanorice-like structures enabled development of highly sensitive (3087 µA mM−1 cm−2), selective and stable electrochemical sensor for hydrazine. In addition, the successfully application of the developed sensor in spiked tap, bottled and industrial water samples for the detection of hydrazine suggested its feasibility for practical environmental application.

In the town of Idrija, Slovenia, the world's second largest mercury mine was active for 500 years and about 37,000 tons of mercury has been lost in the environment. Mercury is still drained from soil, riverbed and floodplains and transported with the Idrijca and Soca Rivers to the Gulf of Trieste. A part of inorganic mercury is methylated either in the river system, or later in the coastal area, and, due to its bioaccumulation and biomagnification represents potential danger to human health. A 1-D aquatic model MeRiMod was used to simulate hydrodynamics and sediment transport in the river system from Idrija to the Soca River mouth. Transport of particle bound and dissolved mercury as well as potential net methylation of mercury in the river system was simulated. The simulation of an observed flood wave with 20-year recurrence period was performed in order to validate the model. Methylation was simulated at lower discharges, as higher methylation rates occur in such conditions. The measurement data and the MeRiMod model were also used to establish a historical mercury mass balance of the Idrijca and Soca Rivers catchment. Sediment core data from the Gulf of Trieste and the measured concentrations from floodplains were used to verify and calibrate the model. Simulations of different high discharges were performed as most of the transport of particulate mercury occurs within flood wave conditions. Compared to the measurements, the results of the model showed an agreement within an order of magnitude, for the transport of total mercury mostly within a factor of 4, and for the methylation within a factor of 5. However, proper trends of the phenomena were obtained by simulations. The combination of modelling and measurements has resulted in some interesting conclusions about the phenomenon of the transport and transformations of mercury in the observed river system.  相似文献

Case Study: Numerical Simulations of Debris Flow below Sto?e, Slovenia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In November 2000 a landslide–debris flow with a volume of 1.2×106?m3 slid down from Sto?e Mountain in NW Slovenia. It partly or totally destroyed 23 buildings in the village of Log pod Mangartom and killed 7 people. As landslides of the same or even greater initial mass could endanger the village in the future, numerical simulations of these possible events were carried out. A hazard map of the area, and the most effective protection measures were determined in detail. A one-dimensional model DEBRIF1D, developed from a dam-break flow model, was used for simulations along the canyon in the upper part of the reach. Downstream, in the region of the village, two two-dimensional models were used: a newly developed PCFLOW2D, and a commercial model FLO-2D. The three models were calibrated by field measurements. A special feature of the DEBRIF1D model enables direct computation of the initial hydrograph. Validity of the quadratic equation expressing the resistance was roughly confirmed by field measurements, and a comparison of the accuracy and applicability of the three models is given.  相似文献

The effects of gender and age on intramuscular fat (IMF) levels, cholesterol concentration, and fatty acid composition were investigated in the semitendinosus (ST) and triceps brachii (TB) muscles of feral red deer (Cervus elaphus). Six stags of >2years of age, four hinds of 1year, and six calves of 6months were shot in Slovenia. Generally, all parameters measured were influenced by interaction of muscle and treatment group (hinds, stags and calves) at the 5% level or less. In ST muscle, the IMF levels were highest for hinds. In the TB muscle, cholesterol was lower for stags than for hinds and calves. The saturated fatty acids were the highest for stags and the mono-unsaturated fatty acids for hinds. The polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were the highest for calves and lowest for hinds. The n-3 PUFAs were the lowest for hinds. In both muscles, the calves had higher n-6 PUFAs than stags and hinds. Only the ST muscle of the hinds contained >1% (1.44%) of the conjugated linoleic acid isomer 18:2cis-9,trans-11, while in the TB of hinds and calves this fatty acid was higher than with stags. We conclude that gender and age of feral red deer influence the IMF content, the cholesterol concentration, and the fatty acid composition of the meat.  相似文献

The Gulf of Trieste is subject to mercury pollution from the So a River which drains polluted sediments from the region of a former mercury mine in Idrija, Slovenia. This has resulted in elevated mercury levels in some marine organisms. Due to a concern for human health, a study has been undertaken to predict mercury contamination trends through the use of a field program and a mathematical model. An annual mercury mass balance of the Gulf is presented first in the paper. This confirms the assumption of the importance of the particulate mercury loads and sedimentation in the mercury cycle. A two-dimensional (2D) advection-dispersion model for non-conservative pollutants which simulates mercury cycling in the Gulf, is then described. This model incorporates the results of a 2D steady-state, primarily wind-driven hydrodynamic model and a 2D sediment transport model. A coupling of the submodels and verification of the integral mercury cycling model are also presented.  相似文献

Spatial variations of mercury in sediment of Minamata Bay, Japan   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Mercury-contaminated effluent was discharged into Minamata Bay from a chemical plant over a period of approximately 40 years until 1968. In October 1977, the Minamata Bay Pollution Prevention Project was initiated to dispose of sedimentary sludge containing mercury concentrations higher than 25 mg kg(-1). In March 1990, the project was completed. In an effort to estimate current contamination in the bay, the vertical and horizontal distributions of mercury in sediment were investigated. Sediment core samples were collected on June 26, 2002 at 16 locations in Minamata Bay and Fukuro Bay located in the southern part of Minamata Bay. The sediment in Fukuro Bay had not been dredged. The total mercury concentration in surface sediment was 1.4-4.3 mg kg(-1) (2.9+/-0.9 mg kg(-1), n=9) for the dredged area of Minamata Bay and 0.3-4.8 mg kg(-1) (3.6+/-1.6 mg kg(-1), n=4) for Fukuro Bay. In the lower layers of long cores taken from both areas, the total mercury concentration decreased with depth and finally showed relatively uniform low values. These values can be considered to represent the background concentration absent of anthropogenic influence, which was estimated for the study area to be 0.068+/-0.012 mg kg(-1) (n=10). From the surface, the total mercury concentration in Fukuro Bay increased with depth and reached a maximum at 8-14 cm. In Minamata Bay, several centimeters from the surface the total mercury concentration did not change significantly having considerably higher values than the background level. At six stations, the methylmercury concentration was determined. Although the vertical variations were similar to those for total mercury, Fukuro Bay sediment showed a higher concentration of methylmercury than Minamata Bay sediment.  相似文献

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is now recognized as an important pathway between land and sea. As such, this flow may contribute to the biogeochemical and other marine budgets of near-shore waters. These discharges typically display significant spatial and temporal variability making assessments difficult. Groundwater seepage is patchy, diffuse, temporally variable, and may involve multiple aquifers. Thus, the measurement of its magnitude and associated chemical fluxes is a challenging enterprise. A joint project of UNESCO and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has examined several methods of SGD assessment and carried out a series of five intercomparison experiments in different hydrogeologic environments (coastal plain, karst, glacial till, fractured crystalline rock, and volcanic terrains). This report reviews the scientific and management significance of SGD, measurement approaches, and the results of the intercomparison experiments. We conclude that while the process is essentially ubiquitous in coastal areas, the assessment of its magnitude at any one location is subject to enough variability that measurements should be made by a variety of techniques and over large enough spatial and temporal scales to capture the majority of these changing conditions. We feel that all the measurement techniques described here are valid although they each have their own advantages and disadvantages. It is recommended that multiple approaches be applied whenever possible. In addition, a continuing effort is required in order to capture long-period tidal fluctuations, storm effects, and seasonal variations.  相似文献

This study describes the development of an electrochemical sensor system for the determination of bisphenol A using tannic acid functionalized CuO nanoglobules. The utilized tannic acid acted simultaneously as both bio-compatible template and functionalizing agent for the as-synthesised CuO nanostructures. The excellent synergy of high surface area and favorable interactions between the moieties of tannic acid and bisphenol A molecules enabled sensitive electrochemical oxidation of bisphenol A within wide detection window (0.1–5.5 µM) and limit of detection estimated to be 0.01 µM. Moreover, the sensor exhibited satisfactory stability and strong anti-interference capability when evaluated against common interferents molecules such as phenol, hydroquinone, and 4-nitrophenol.  相似文献

Three-dimensional modelling of mercury cycling in the Gulf of Trieste   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The Gulf of Trieste (Northern Adriatic) is subject to mercury pollution from a former mercury mine in Idrija, located along a river which transports mercury-contaminated sediments into the Gulf. Concentrations in suspended and bottom sediments are up to two orders of magnitude higher than in the central and southern Adriatic. Extensive research has been carried out on measurements and modelling of the transport and fate of mercury in the Gulf. Two- and three-dimensional models have been developed to include the influence of the significant advective transport due to currents. Wind, thermohaline forcing, and the Soca river momentum are the most important forcing factors. A two-dimensional model simulated the transport of non-methylated and methylated mercury in dissolved, particulate and plankton fractions. Mercury processes included the input of atmospheric mercury, sedimentation, reduction, methylation and demethylation. The model simulations gave basically what were proper trends of the phenomena; quantitatively the measured and computed results are mainly within a factor of three. To simulate the non-uniform distribution of parameters over the depth, an existing three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic and transport-dispersion (TD) model, PCFLOW3D, was adapted and applied. As it was found that most mercury transport is related to suspended sediment particles, a new 3D sediment transport module was also developed and included in the model. Three cases are presented: one describing the simulation of TD of dissolved total mercury; another the simulation of the TD of particulate mercury in the Gulf during a river flood; and the third simulating sediment transport in the Gulf during a period of strong ENE wind. Comparison with measurements was only partly possible, but mainly the computed and measured results were within a factor of two and proper trends of the phenomena were obtained by the simulations. The combination of modelling and measurements has resulted in some interesting conclusions about the phenomenon of the transport and fate of mercury in a coastal sea.  相似文献
