Mice persistently infected with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) exhibit impaired learning ability. In this report, we determined whether clearance of the virus was associated with restoration of behavioral function. Neonatal Balb/cByJ mice were persistently infected with LCMV and tested as adults in a nonconditional spatial discrimination task. The presence of viral proteins in neurons was confirmed immunohistochemically and infectious virus was quantified in the blood by plaque assay. LCMV-infected adult mice made more errors in a Y-maze avoidance task compared to sham-inoculated controls. After the initial behavioral analysis, infected and control mice received a dose of cytotoxic T-lymphocytes sufficient to clear virus from these mice. Following complete clearance of the virus, mice were re-tested in the behavioral task, 5 months after the original test. No reversal of the learning deficit was seen following viral clearance; mice that had been cleared of the virus and those that remained persistently infected behaved similarly. These data indicate that persistent LCMV infection of the CNS lasting up to 7 months results in discriminated learning impairments that are not reversed by subsequent anti-viral immunocytotherapy.  相似文献

This study investigated failures of prospective memory (PM) as a relevant but neglected error type in medicine. A patient simulator was used to investigate PM failures. The influence of subjective importance (high, low) and type of intention (educational, internal, external) on the (missed) execution of intention was investigated in a 2 x 2 design. The effects on missed executions by importance (high < low) and type of intention (educational < external < internal) were hypothesized. Of 73 valid intentions in 40 prepared simulator scenarios 19 (26%) were missed overall. A total of 64% of unimportant and 80% of important intentions were executed 79% of educational 67% of external and 72% of internal intentions were executed. Neither difference was statistically significant using chi(2) tests. Interaction was significant for missed executions (p = 0.025; n = 19; df = 2; chi(2) = 7.41) and for executions (p = 0.002; n = 54; df = 2; chi(2) = 12.50). Despite low statistical support and some methodological limitations, it was possible to show that PM failures are relevant to patient safety and that patient simulators are a suitable but so far unused tool for their investigation.  相似文献

Artifacts may occur in many in vitro models of pulse oximetry due to the optical effects of synchronously oriented and/or deformed erythrocytes. Although these artifacts are most likely negligible in living superficial tissues, they are demonstrated to have considerable influence on the calibration curve obtainable from the in vitro simulation of pulse oximetry in such models, especially at low oxygen saturations. Therefore, we have developed a modified in vitro model which reduces the effect of these artifacts. This is achieved by excluding data obtained during pressure transients and by raising the blood flow velocity. As a result, the model more closely approximates in vivo pulse oximetry, particularly under clinically important conditions of low blood oxygen saturation levels.  相似文献

The periodic woven structures of fabrics can be defined on the basis of the convolution theorem. Here an elementary unit with the minimum number of thread crossings and a nonrectangular two-dimensional comb function for the pattern of repetition is used to define woven structures. The expression derived is more compact than the conventional diagram for weaving, and the parameters that one needs to determine a given fabric can easily be extracted from its Fourier transform. Several results with real samples of the most common structures-plain, twill, and satin-are presented.  相似文献

Several processing techniques of digital images allowed us to quantify the percentage of cell surface covered by microprojections (microvilli or microplicae) (SCM), the adhesion between epithelial cells by the parameter intercellular junctions (IJ), the size (cell area), shape (cell shape) and shade (cell shade) of cells on the corneal epithelium of nine rabbits. The data were analyzed and the epithelial cells were classified into three groups by cluster analysis. Assuming the representativeness of the sample, our findings suggest that for a normal corneal epithelium, 80% of the cells could show SCM >41%, and IJ >0.98 (being one a cell to cell junction without disruptions). Standard deviations of cell shade lower than 21 gray levels could indicate a tendency to lose the cell shade mosaic. Normal corneas could show a majority of cells (54–69%) included in group 2 with smaller mean size (80% of cells with cell area <242 μm2), higher SCM (80% of cells with SCM >44.83%), polygonal mean shape and brighter shade. Group 1 (15–30% of cells) could show a larger mean size (80% of cells with cell area >494 μm2), lower SCM (although 80% of cells with SCM >32.61%), circular mean shape and darker electron reflex. Group 3 could display a medium mean size, higher SCM (similar to group 2), circular mean shape (similar to group 1), and brighter shade. These analyses could possibly be used to further assess the corneal response to ocular drugs, contact lens, and surgical procedures or to discriminate between pathology stages. Microsc. Res. Staphylococcus aureus can elicit mild to more severe degrees of mastitis in cattle, depending on the response of the host's immune system and the virulence factors of the specific isolate. Several virulence factors are controlled by a global regulatory system, designated accessory gene regulator (agr). Thus, the objective was to examine associations between different capsular and agr types and the severity of bovine mastitis caused by S. aureus. All isolates were obtained from bovine subclinical (n = 50), mild clinical (n = 73), and moderate clinical mastitis cases (n = 28). Isolates containing the agrI gene and lacking the agr locus (agr?) were more prevalent among subclinical than clinical mastitis cases, whereas isolates containing the agrII and agrIII genes were more prevalent among clinical mastitis cases. The capsular types 5 (cap5) and 8 (cap8) were found in 42 and 44%, respectively, of the isolates obtained from subclinical cases and in 38.6 and 58.4%, respectively, of those isolated from clinical mastitis cases. Capsular type was not associated with type of mastitis (subclinical, mild clinical, or moderate clinical). We found a strong association between agr type and type of mastitis, suggesting that knowledge of S. aureus genetic profiles could be an additional tool to control this disease.  相似文献

We report new pulsed NMR studies of the supercooling of molecular hydrogen constrained to the interior of the molecular cages of zeolite. Measurements of the supercooling for the ultra-small structure of zeolite-5A in comparison with earlier studies show that the substantial supercooling observed does not depend strongly on the characteristic dimensions and is interpreted as a class-II growth attributed to imperfect wetting. Studies of the supercooling of HD and detailed analyses of the orientational ordering of molecular H2 show that the abrupt transitions observed in the pulsed NMR studies are associated with the supercooled liquid/solid transitions and are not associated with orientational ordering.  相似文献
