Studies concerning charged nickel hydroxide electrodes. VII. Influence of alkali concentration on anodic peak positions

After repetitive potential cycling employing a high positive potential limit (>700 mV wrt Hg/HgO/ KOH) three anodic and one cathodic peak can be observed using aβ-Ni(OH)₂ starting material. Anodic peaks found at 425, 470 and 555 mV in 5 mol dm^?3 KOH shift to less positive potentials as the alkali concentration is increased appearing at 365, 410 and 455 mV respectively in 12.5 mol dm^?3 KOH. Four anodic processes involving various pairs of coexisting phases within both theβ andα-/γ-phase system can be identified as summarized below in order of increasing positive potential: Peak A $$\begin{gathered} Peak A{\text{ }}U_\alpha ^A \to {\text{ }}V_\gamma ^A \hfill \\ Peak B{\text{ }}U_\beta ^B \to {\text{ }}V_\beta ^B \hfill \\ {\text{ }}\mathop C\limits^ + {\text{ }}U_\alpha ^C \to {\text{ }}V_\gamma ^C \hfill \\ Peak E{\text{ }}V_\beta ^B \to {\text{ }}V_\gamma ^E \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ Observed shifts in anodic and cathodic peak potentials are consistent with the known influence of alkali and water activity on the reversible potentials for the above processes.     

An Investigation of Cheating in Online Games

Cheating is rampant in current gameplay on the Internet. However, it isn't as well understood as we might expect. The authors summarize the various known methods of cheating and define a taxonomy of online game cheating with respect to the underlying vulnerability, consequence, and cheating principal. This taxonomy provides a systematic introduction to the characteristics of cheats in online games and how they can arise. Although cheating in online games is largely due to various security failures, the four traditional aspects of security—confidentiality, integrity, availability, and authenticity—are insufficient to explain it. Instead, fairness becomes a vital additional aspect, and its enforcement provides a convincing perspective for understanding security techniques' role in developing and operating online games.     

Variations and Commonalities in Processes of Collaboration: The Need for Multi-Site Workplace Studies

Workplace studies have made a major contribution to the field of CSCW, drawing attention to subtle practices that enable effective collaboration. However, workplace studies typically focus on a single setting, making it difficult to assess the generalisability of the findings. Through a multi-site workplace study, we explore a specific collaborative process, that of the handover which occurs when a patient is transferred from one hospital or ward to another. The study demonstrates that the term ??handover?? captures a variety of collaborative practices that vary in both their form and content, reflecting aspects of the setting in which they occur. Multi-site workplace studies are shown to be essential for CSCW, not only generating findings that have relevance beyond a single setting but also focusing attention on aspects of work practice that may otherwise go unnoticed.     

The Shopping Jacket: Wearable computing for the consumer

As part of the Bristol Wearable Computing Initiative, we are exploring location-sensing systems suitable for use with wearable computing. In this paper we present our findings, and in particular a wearable application — the ‘Shopping Jacket’ — which relies on a minimal infrastructure to be effective. We use two positioning devices, ‘pingers’ and GPS. The pinger is used to signal the presence of a shop, and to indicate the type of shop and its website. The GPS is used to disambiguate which branch of a high street chain is being passed. The wearable uses this information to determine whether the wearer needs to be alerted that they are passing an interesting shop, or to direct the wearer around a shopping mall. The Shopping Jacket integrates a wearable CardPC, GPS and pinger receivers, a near-field radio link, hand-held display, GSM data telephone and a speech interface into a conventional sports blazer.     

The Well Mannered Wearable Computer

In this paper we describe continuing work being carried out as part of the Bristol Wearable Computing Initiative. We are interested in the use of context sensors to improve the usefulness of wearable computers. A CyberJacket incorporating a Tourist Guide application has been built, and we have experimented with location and movement sensing devices to improve its performance. In particular, we have researched processing techniques for data from accelerometers which enable the wearable computer to determine the user’s activity. We have experimented with, and review, techniques already employed by others; and then propose new methods for analysing the data delivered by these devices. We try to minimise the number of devices needed, and use a single X-Y accelerometer device. Using our techniques we have adapted our CyberJacket and Tourist Guide to include a multimedia presentation which gives the user information using different media depending on the user’s activity as well as location.     

International Symposium on Wearable Computing (ISWC) 2008

The 12th International Symposium on Wearable Computing (ISWC) was held in Pittsburgh in September 2008. It is one of the longest-running conferences focusing on aspects of pervasive and mobile computing. With over 60 submissions, the program committee selected eight long papers, seven short papers, and nine posters for the conference (a 26 percent acceptance rate for long papers). Sessions, which were presented over two days, covered location mapping, mobile phones and human interfaces, activity recognition, activity support, and power and system integration.     

A formal model of atomicity in asynchronous systems

Summary We propose a generalisation of occurrence graphs as a formal model of computational structure. The model is used to define the atomic occurrence of a program, to characterise interference freeness between programs, and to model error recovery in a decentralised system.     

Taxonomies of logically defined qualitative spatial relations

This paper develops a taxonomy of qualitative spatial relations for pairs of regions, which are all logically defined from two primitive (but axiomatized) notions. The first primitive is the notion of two regions being connected, which allows eight jointly exhaustive and pairwise disjoint relations to be defined. The second primitive is the convex hull of a region which allows many more relations to be defined. We also consider the development of the useful notions of composition tables for the defined relations and networks specifying continuous transitions between pairs of regions. We conclude by discussing what kind of criteria to apply when deciding how fine grained a taxonomy to create.     

Nutrition labelling of foods: comparisons between US regulations and Codex guidelines

Nutrition labelling of food impacts not only on consumers and the food industry, but on international trade as well. When requirements for food label information are similar among countries, trade is facilitated. Comparisons between recent nutrition labelling regulations issued by the USA and the international guidelines formulated by Codex Alimentarius identify not only challenges to international harmonization that require focused efforts, but also opportunities for increasing international agreement on nutrition labelling. Factors to be considered are the continued benefits of a generalized Codex guideline as well as technical issues including analytical methods, nutrients to be declared, bases for declaration, and reference values.
