A hitherto unavailable analytical solution to the free vibration problem of general cross-ply laminated rigidly clamped rectangular plates, incorporating first-order shear deformation, and rotatory and in-plane inertias into the formulation, is presented. A recently developed boundary continuous displacement-based generalized Navier solution technique is used to solve the five highly coupled linear second-order partial differential equations with constant coefficients, and the associated geometric boundary conditions. The assumed solution functions are in the form of double Fourier series, which satisfy the rigidly clamped boundary conditions a priori in a manner similar to the conventional Navier method. Convergence characteristics of the natural frequencies of both symmetric and antisymmetric cross-ply plates are numerically established. Other numerical results presented herein include (i) comparison with the corresponding available first-order shear deformation theory-based Galerkin and classical lamination theory-based boundary-discontinuous analytical solutions, and (ii) study of the effects of thickness and aspect ratio on the natural frequencies.  相似文献

Optimum design of tire‐tread sections is an important practical issue. However, useful study of the problem that can suggest a reliable guideline for determining the optimum tread sections had hardly been made in the past. The present paper describes a new analysis of the state of stresses in tire‐tread sections in contact with the road surface, taking special care of the boundary conditions. Based on the analysis, a method is proposed to determine the optimum tread shapes for avoiding lateral slippage between tires and roads. The displacement potential function formulation, an ideal mathematical model for the practical stress problems, has been used in conjunction with finite‐difference method of solution. For the present analysis, lateral slipping in absence of frictional resistance as well as the no‐slip conditions of the tire‐tread contact surface have been considered along with a large number of tread aspect ratios. The present computational approach proves to be a powerful tool for determining the optimum tread shapes for avoiding the lateral slippage of tire‐treads. A three-dimensional eigenfunction expansion approach for determination of the singular stress field in the vicinity of an adhesively-bonded scarf joint interface in a plate, with its top and bottom surfaces being encased, fully or partially, between infinitely rigid blocks is presented. The plate is subjected to extension/bending (mode I) and in-plane shear/twisting (mode II) far-field loading. Both the adhesive layer and plate materials are assumed to be isotropic and elastic. The boundary conditions that are prescribed on the end-faces (free, fixed and lubricated) of the plate as well as those, prescribed at the bottom or top surface of the scarf-bonded plate on either side of the interface between the plate and adhesive layer materials (fixed-fixed, free-fixed and fixed-free), are exactly satisfied. Numerical results include the dependence of the lowest eigenvalue (or most severe stress singularity) on the wedge aperture angle of the plate material. Variation of the same with respect to the shear moduli ratio of the constituent plate and adhesive layer materials is also an important part of the present investigation. Hitherto unobserved interesting and physically meaningful conclusions in regards to the fixed edge singularity and delamination type flaw sensitivity of an adhesively bonded plate surface are also presented. Finally, hitherto unavailable results, pertaining to the through-width variations of stress intensity factors corresponding to symmetric and skew-symmetric sinusoidal loads that also satisfy the boundary conditions on the end-faces of the adhesively bonded plate, in the vicinity of the scarf joint interface, under investigation, bridge a longstanding gap in the bonded joint stress singularity/fracture mechanics literature.  相似文献

Mobile communications has seen an explosive growth in the past five years with the integration of communications devices and multimedia applications. Transport connections set up over wireless links are frequently plagued by such problems as a high bit error rate (BER), frequent disconnections of the mobile users, and low wireless bandwidth that may change dynamically. Proposed developments in B3G and 4G wireless services will further challenge researchers to come up with efficient devices that can handle the huge data transmission. Fast and low-power compression algorithms are greatly needed to accommodate the specification. This paper highlights and analyzes various next-generation image-compression algorithms developed on the basis of image transmission via a wireless channel. In addition, the performance comparisons between the proposed hardware implementations are shown. Two important findings are discovered: First, the high-speed reconfigurable devices called FPSoC are the best hardware implementation. Second, a vector-quantization-based VSPIHT algorithm offers the best solution of parallel processing in efficient hardware architecture. This article serves as a reference point for researchers developing image-compression algorithms for next-generation mobile-communications devices. This paper presents the design methodology to produce an adaptive supply voltage, which is used to drive digital sub-threshold logic system. Design guidelines to maintain constant speed and power via adaptive VDD regulation are presented first. Then the paper discusses modification of sub-1 V bandgap reference (BGR) circuits using dynamic threshold MOSFET technique to provide the necessary adaptive reference voltage. Another well-known sub-1 V BGR circuit using current mode technique is also fabricated and compared. Both circuits are implemented in CMOS 0.18 μm technology. Empirical data from SPICE simulation and first order approximation techniques are used to derive analytical design models used inside BGR circuit. Measurement results of both the fabricated circuits show reference voltage output of 500 mV range; which are in good match of SPICE simulation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

While much has been written within academic journals about prisoners, rarely is there anything written by prisoners. In this essay, we, a group of prisoners who are earning or have earned college degrees while incarcerated in Texas, address the purpose, merits, and pitfalls of prison education and reform. Written as a response to the essays appearing in this special issue, we discuss our experiences of being othered as inmates, the impact of societal bias against us, our perspectives on prison education, and our own ideas for reforming prisons and making them more humane.  相似文献

An eigenfuntion expansion method is employed for obtaining three-dimensional asymptotic displacement and stress fields in the vicinity of the front of a crack/anticrack discontinuity weakening/reinforcing an infinite pie-shaped trimaterial plate, of finite thickness, formed as a result of bimaterial (matrix/ARC plus reaction product/scatterer) deposit over a substrate (fiber/semiconductor). The wedge is subjected to mode I/II far field loading. Each material is isotropic and elastic, but with different material properties. The material 2 or the substrate is always taken to be a half-space, while the wedge aperture angle of the material 1 is varied to represent varying composition of the bimaterial deposit. Numerical results pertaining to the variation of the mode I/II eigenvalues (or stress singularities) with Young’s moduli ratio, as well as with the wedge aperture angle of the material 1 (reaction product/scatterer) are presented. Hitherto generally unavailable results, pertaining to the through-thickness variations of stress intensity factors or stress singularity coefficients for symmetric exponentially growing distributed load and its skew-symmetric counterpart that also satisfy the boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the trimaterial plates under investigation, bridge a longstanding gap in the stress singularity/interfacial fracture mechanics literature.  相似文献

A novel eigenfunction expansion technique, based in part on separation of the thickness-variable, is developed to derive three-dimensional asymptotic stress field in the vicinity of the front of a semi-infinite through-thickness crack/anticrack weakening/reinforcing an infinite orthotropic/orthorhombic plate, of finite thickness and subjected to far-field anti-plane shear loading. Crack/anticrack-face boundary conditions and those that are prescribed on the top and bottom (free, fixed and lubricated) surfaces of the orthotropic plate are exactly satisfied. Five different through-thickness crack/anticrack-face boundary conditions are considered: (i) slit crack, (ii) anticrack or perfectly bonded rigid inclusion, (iii) transversely rigid inclusion (longitudinal slip permitted), (iv) rigid inclusion in part perfectly bonded, the remainder with slip, and (v) rigid inclusion located alongside a crack. Explicit expressions for the singular stress fields in the vicinity of the fronts of the through-thickness cracks, anticracks or mixed crack–anticrack type discontinuities, weakening/reinforcing orthotropic/orthorhombic plates, subjected to far-field anti-plane shear (mode III) loadings, are presented. In addition, singular residual stress fields in the vicinity of the fronts of these cracks, anticracks and similar discontinuities are also discussed.  相似文献

Effect of thickness on the buckling of a perfect thick plane strain cross-ply ring (very long cylindrical shell) is investigated. A linearized version of a fully nonlinear finite element analysis, that employs a cylindrically curved 16-node layer-element, and is based on the assumption of layer-wise linear displacements distribution through thickness (LLDT), is utilized for computation of hydrostatic buckling pressure of the afore-mentioned cross-ply ring. Numerical results pertaining to the effect of thickness (interlaminar shear/normal deformation) on the hydrostatic buckling pressure of cross-ply rings and comparison with their classical lamination theory (CLT) counterparts are also presented.  相似文献
