The widespread use and dramatic success of prosthetic joint implant surgery (arthroplasty) has greatly improved the quality of life for many individuals suffering from degenerative, arthritic, or injured joints. However, in a number of cases, recipients experience discomfort at the arthroplasty site that can signal biomechanical failure, or periprosthetic infection of the joint, or both. In fact, infection remains a devastating obstacle, preventing arthroplasty from being an almost perfect medical procedure. Existing tests for the diagnosis of infection in orthopedics are disappointing because of the relatively high frequency of false negative results. To overcome this shortcoming, and to reduce the number of infected revision arthroplasties, a methodology based on molecular biology has been established. The method allows the rapid, sensitive and accurate diagnosis of orthopedic infections, and should aid the clinician with treatment regimens, surgical decisions, and overall patient management in the growing arthroplasty population.  相似文献

Intravascular lymphoma (IVL) is an uncommon neoplastic disorder characterized by monoclonal intravascular expansion of lymphoid cells. Occlusion of small vessels in various organ systems probably accounts for the broad clinical spectrum of this type of lymphoma, which can closely mimic a variety of diseases, especially vasculitic disorders, and thus lead to delayed clinical diagnosis. This is the first report of a patient who presented with a predominant symptom of symmetric polyarthritis accompanied by fever. While her initial systemic symptoms, such as fever, improved rapidly after initiation of corticosteroid therapy, the response of the polyarthritic joint manifestations was only transient. The patient died of progressive lung involvement and was diagnosed as having IVL by histologic analysis of tissue samples obtained postmortem.  相似文献

This paper presents the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its current scientific programme and outlines options for high-energy colliders at the energy frontier for the years to come. The immediate plans include the exploitation of the LHC at its design luminosity and energy, as well as upgrades to the LHC and its injectors. This may be followed by a linear electron-positron collider, based on the technology being developed by the Compact Linear Collider and the International Linear Collider collaborations, or by a high-energy electron-proton machine. This contribution describes the past, present and future directions, all of which have a unique value to add to experimental particle physics, and concludes by outlining key messages for the way forward.  相似文献

The intermetallic compounds RE 2Cu2Mg and RE 2Pd2Mg (RE=La, Ce) were prepared and characterized by magnetic susceptibility and heat-capacity measurements. They crystallize with an ordered U3Si2 type structure (space group P4/mbm) and the cerium compounds contain stable trivalent cerium ions, which undergo antiferromagnetic ordering at ∼7.5 and ∼4 K, respectively. In high magnetic fields Ce2Cu2Mg exhibits spin reorientation with critical field strength of 40 kOe at 5 K. The data are compared to the non-magnetic isotypic compounds La2 T 2Mg (T=Cu, Ni, Pd) and to the already reported intermediate valent Ce2Ni2Mg.  相似文献

Ceramic silica (SiO(2)) hybrid nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning of solutions containing biocompatible polymer and modified silica precursors. The new hybrid nanofibers are based on polyethylene oxide (PEO) and a new solution of modified sol-gel particles of mixture containing tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and 3-glycidyloxypropyltriethoxysilane (GPTEOS) in a weight ratio of 3:1. Adding high-molecular-weight PEO into the silica sol is found to enhance the formation of the silica nanofibers and leads to reduce the water-soluble carrying polymer down to 1.2%wt. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and attenuated total reflection fourier transformation infrared ATR-FTIR measurements are suggested that PEO is encapsulated by the silica component. This excellent formulation renders electrospinning of SiO(2) a robust process for an easy production of controllable silicate nanofibrous matrices. For instance, nanofibers with average diameter down to 400 nm are accessible by varying the weight ratio between the polymer and the inorganic precursor. These are reduced to 120 nm after the pyrolysis process. Moreover, the surface of the nanofibers could be easily modified, either by Al(3+) leading to aluminium silicate coatings, or by incorporation of Ca(2+) ions and subsequent bioactive hydroxyl carbonate apatite (HAP) formation. These hybrid silica nanofibers are possess a unique collective properties can have a great impact either in high-temperature reinforced materials and filtration or in biomedical applications such as in dentistry and bone tissue engineering.  相似文献
