OBJECTIVE: The pathogenesis of neurologic and neuropsychologic dysfunction in HIV-1 infection is unclear. The purpose of the study was to determine an association between cerebral perfusion and HIV-1-related ocular microangiopathic syndrome. METHODS: We studied 28 HIV-1-infected patients, seven of whom presented with asymptomatic HIV infection, nine with lymphadenopathy syndrome or AIDS-related complex, and 12 with AIDS. Cerebral perfusion was semi-quantitatively measured by single photon emission computed tomography of the brain using technetium-99 hexamethyl-propylenamine oxime (HMPAO-SPECT). The conjunctival manifestation of HIV-1-related microangiopathic syndrome was measured by a rating scale determining blood-flow sludging and, retinal cotton-wool spots were counted. CD4 count, neopterin, beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2M), haemoglobin, and age were determined as putative confounding variables. RESULTS: Mean conjunctival sludge in patients with normal HMPAO-SPECT findings was 1.3 +/- 0.5 (mean +/- s.e.m.); no cotton-wool spots were present. In patients with slightly impaired HMPAO-SPECT, it was 2.1 +/- 0.6 and mean cotton-wool spot count was 1.1 +/- 0.4. In patients with severely impaired HMPAO-SPECT, mean conjunctival sludge was 4.5 +/- 0.3 and mean cotton-wool spot count was 4.9 +/- 1.1 HMPAO-SPECT findings were closely associated with conjunctival sludge (r = 0.72; P < 0.001) and number of cotton-wool spots (r = 0.78; P < 0.001), whereas only a slight association with staging of HIV disease was found (P = 0.052). Analysis of covariance controlling for CD4 count neopterin, beta 2M, age, and haemoglobin demonstrated a significant difference between the three HMPAO-SPECT groups for both the number of cotton-wool spots (P < 0.001) and the conjunctival sludge rating (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: There was a close association between severity of HIV-1-related ocular microangiopathic syndrome and severity of cerebral hypoperfusion. Microvascular alterations might contribute to the pathogenesis of neurological and neuropsychological symptoms in patients with HIV-1 disease. Furthermore, the conjunctival sludge rating and the number of cotton-wool spots might be appropriate indicators for severity of microvascular changes of the central nervous system [corrected]. 相似文献

The effect of a chitosan coating and Mentha aquatica L. essence on Iranian white cheese was investigated. Results showed 100% inhibition of Escherichia coli growth using 1.5% essence after 10 days. After 15 days of incubation, the Staphylococcus aureus population was reduced by 44.2%, 70.0%, and 88.5% using 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% essence, respectively. After 15 days, Listeria monocytogenes growth was inhibited by 63.84%, 70.12%, and 85.9% using 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5% essence, respectively. Inhibition zone diameter studies also confirmed the antibacterial effects of applied coating against all the above‐mentioned bacteria in Iranian white cheese. 相似文献

The first two surveys of the dental health of young Finnish men were conducted in 1919 and 1965. The objective of four subsequent surveys (1976, 1981, 1986, and 1991) was to collect both interview and clinical examination data for the monitoring of changes in the oral health status of the recruits. A significant reduction in self-reported toothache, gingival bleeding, and number of decayed teeth was observed from 1976 to 1991. At examination, the numbers of decayed teeth, teeth indicated for extraction, teeth in need of fillings, and missing teeth decreased substantially, as did the teeth with visible plaque, subgingival calculus, and teeth with 4-mm or deeper periodontal pockets. This comprehensive series of successive cross-sectional oral health surveys clearly shows that since 1976 a significant decrease in oral disease and treatment needs has taken place among the Finnish population of young men. 相似文献

The temperatures for the experiments were chosen between 50–600 °C. The experiments used B-type cylindrical specimens machined
from X40CrMoV in an R.R. Moore rotating bending type fatigue test machine obeying the high cycle principle. The temperature
intervals for the experiments were chosen as 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 °C, for which the fatigue limit for each
interval at 2 × 106 cycles was determined. The fatigue limit of the material at room temperature (RT) is observed as 432 MPa, whereas it drops
to 383 MPa at 400 °C. On the other hand, it stays almost constant between 400–600 °C, indicating that the material includes
the elements forming strong carbides such as V, Mo, and Cr, which prevent the decrease of the fatigue limit due to higher

Template dependencies were introduced by Sadri and Ullman [17] to generalize existing forms of data dependencies. It was hoped that by studying a large and natural class of dependencies, we could solve the inference problem for these dependencies, while that problem was elusive for restricted subsets of the template dependencies, such as embedded multivalued dependencies. At about the same time, other generalizations of known dependency forms were developed, such as the implicational dependencies of Fagin [11] and the algebraic dependencies of Yannakakis and Papadimitriou [20]. Unlike the template dependencies, the latter forms include the functional dependencies as special cases. In this paper we show that no nontrivial functional dependency follows from template dependencies, and we characterize those template dependencies that follow from functional dependencies. We then give a complete set of axioms for reasoning about combinations of functional and template dependencies. As a result, template dependencies augmented by functional dependencies can serve as a substitute for the more general implicational or algebraic dependencies, providing the same ability to represent those dependencies that appear ‘in nature’, while providing a somewhat simpler notation and set of axioms than the more general classes. 相似文献

Gene clustering is one of the most important problems in bioinformatics. In the sequential data clustering, hidden Markov models (HMMs) have been widely used to find similarity between sequences, due to their capability of handling sequence patterns with various lengths. In this paper, a novel gene clustering scheme based on HMMs optimized by particle swarm optimization algorithm is introduced. In this approach, each gene sequence is described by a specific HMM, and then for each model, its probability to generate individual sequence is evaluated. A hierarchical clustering algorithm based on a new definition of a distance measure has been applied to find the best clusters. Experiments carried out on lung cancer-related genes dataset show that the proposed approach can be successfully utilized for gene clustering. 相似文献
