Inclined plates are often installed as mechanical separation aids in gravity settlers for the separation of liquid-liquid systems. The authors investigated the process of coalescence of single drops on trickling films flowing off inclined plates. The method of investigation was developed by Blass and Rautenberg. It ensures that, under certain conditions, only hydrodynamic parameters influence the coalescence process to any significant extent. The coalescence time of the drops characterizes the process of coalescence. Short time between 1 and 3 seconds provide favourable conditions for coalescence whereas long times, often ten times as long or even longer are unfavourable. This contribution introduces a criterion for clear demarcation between these two ranges and also a determination of separation parameters for favourable conditions for coalescence. Furthermore, the function of the plates is described, which is determined by hydrodynamic and wetting processes. The characteristic operating regions of a plate are shown in a working diagram.  相似文献

The in vitro antifungal activity of chitosan against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Race 4 (FocR4) the causal agent of banana wilt was investigated. Chitosan at all concentrations tested reduced the hyphal growth of FocR4 on potato dextrose agar media and recording maximum inhibition of 76.36% at 8 mg/mL. The inhibitory effect was found to increase as chitosan concentration increases. The 50% effective concentration value was estimated by probit analysis, and it was 1.4 mg/mL. Chitosan was more effective in potato dextrose broth where it completely inhibited the mycelial growth of FocR4 at all concentrations tested. Chitosan inhibited the sporulation of FocR4 by a maximum of 96.53% at 8 mg/mL chitosan, and 100% inhibition for spore germination was recorded at all concentrations tested. Chitosan at concentrations of more than 1.6 mg/mL was also found to induce morphological changes in FocR4 characterized by agglomeration of hyphae, abnormal shapes, vesicles, or empty cells devoid of cytoplasm in the mycelia. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Is hydrodynamic modelling a sound approach for the design of gravity settlers without coalescing aids? Liquid/liquid dispersions occur in many chemical operations. Normally they have to be broken down again. This is accomplished by the flowing together of the droplets (coalescence) to a coherent phase. In practice simple gravity settlers without any coalescing aids are used for this purpose. In such settlers the dispersion is separated by the density difference between the phases, while a dense dispersion layer forms at the interface between the dispersion and the clear mother phase. The present paper deals with the modelling of such gravity settlers. First, the models describing the coalescence process of single drops are reviewed and analyzed. A physical notion of the coalescence process is derived thereform. Afterwards the models for the droplet coalescence in dense dispersions taken from the literature are presented and discussed. In conclusion the chances and limitations of the present settler models are indicated by quantitative comparison of selected models. A computer program specially developed for this purpose is presented.  相似文献

Fundamental investigations of coalescence processes in settlers with plate packages for the separation of liquid-liquid dispersions prompted an analysis of the drop motion on the interface of a stratified two-phase flow. Therefore, a physical model was developed, which permits the calculation of drop velocity along the interface of an inclined trickling film. Starting from a balance of forces around a single particle, the model provides the equation of motion for a steady motion of single particles in a stratified two-phase flow. Several assumptions and considerations were necessary to solve this equation, such as taking into account the influence of the wall and of flow resistance. The model calculation assumes Newtonian liquids and laminar, smooth trickling films. A comparison with experimental results confirms that the drop motion behaviour is well reproduced.  相似文献

The use of small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) to down‐regulate the expression of disease‐associated proteins carries significant promise for the treatment of a variety of clinical disorders. One of the main barriers to the widespread clinical use of siRNAs, however, is their entrapment and degradation within the endolysosomal pathway of target cells. Here, the trafficking and function of PP75, a nontoxic, biodegradable, lipid membrane disruptive anionic polymer composed of phenylalanine derivatized poly(L‐lysine isophthalamide) is reported. PP75 is readily endocytosed by cells, safely permeabilizes endolysosomes in a pH dependent manner and facilitates the transfer of co‐endocytosed materials directly into the cytoplasm. The covalent attachment of siRNAs to PP75 using disulfide linkages generates conjugates that effectively traffic siRNAs to the cytoplasm of target cells both in vitro and in vivo. In a subcutaneous malignant glioma tumor model, a locally delivered PP75‐stathmin siRNA conjugate decreases stathmin expression in tumor cells and, in combination with the nitrosourea chemotherapy carmustine, is highly effective at inhibiting tumor growth. PP75 may be clinically useful for the local delivery of siRNAs, in particular for the treatment of solid tumors.  相似文献

In this letter, we propose a new functionality to scalable video coding (SVC), that is, the support of multiple region of interests (ROIs) for heterogeneous display resolution. The main objective of SVC is to provide temporal, spatial, and quality scalability of an encoded bitstream. The ROI is an area that is semantically important to a particular user, especially users with heterogeneous display resolutions. Less transmission bandwidth is needed compared to when the entire region is transmitted/decoded and then sub‐sampled or cropped. To support multiple ROIs in SVC, we adopt flexible macroblock ordering (FMO), a tool defined in H.264, and based on it, we propose a way to encode and, independently, decode ROIs. The proposed method is implemented on the joint scalable video model (JSVM) and its functionality verified.  相似文献

Basal stem rot (BSR) is a fatal fungal (Ganoderma) disease of oil palm plantations and has a significant impact on the production of palm oil in Malaysia. Because there is no effective treatment to control this disease, early detection of BSR is vital for sustainable disease management. The limitations of visual detection have led to an interest in the development of spectroscopically based detection techniques for rapid diagnosis of this disease. The aim of this work was to develop a procedure for early and accurate detection and differentiation of Ganoderma disease with different severities, based on spectral analysis and statistical models. Reflectance spectroscopy analysis ranging from the visible to near infrared region (325–1075 nm) was applied to analyse oil palm leaf samples of 47 healthy (G0), 55 slightly damaged (G1), 48 moderately damaged (G2), and 40 heavily damaged (G3) trees in order to detect and quantify Ganoderma disease at different levels of severity. Reflectance spectra were pre-processed, and principal component analysis (PCA) was performed on different pre-processed datasets including the raw dataset, first derivative, and second derivative datasets. The classification models: linear and quadratic discrimination analysis, k-nearest neighbour (kNN), and Naïve–Bayes were applied to PC scores for classifying four levels of stress in BSR-infected oil palm trees. The analysis showed that the kNN-based model predicted the disease with a high average overall classification accuracy of 97% with the second derivative dataset. Results confirmed the usefulness and efficiency of the spectrally based classification approach in rapid screening of BSR in oil palm.  相似文献

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is the most widely employed plastic for single-use applications. The use of enzymes isolated from microorganisms, such as PETase with the capacity to hydrolyze PET into its monomers, represents a promising method for its sustainable recycling. However, the accessibility of the enzyme to the hydrolysable bonds is an important challenge that needs to be addressed for effective biodegradation of postconsumer PET. Here, we combined an alkali pre-treatment (25 °C) with PETase incubation (30 °C) with post-consumed PET bottles. The pre-treatment modifies the surface of the plastic and decreases its crystallinity enabling the access of the enzyme to the hydrolysable chemical bonds. When the alkali pre-treatment is incorporated into the enzymatic process the degradation yields increase more than one order of magnitude reaching values comparable to those obtained during heating/cooling cycles. Our results show energetic advantages over other reported pre-treatments and open new avenues for sustainable PET recycling.  相似文献
