Sodium nitrite (SNT) widely used as a curative agent in meat processing industry possesses cell-transforming mutagenic and cytogenic properties. Dietary omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFA) has been shown to reduce the severity of certain types of cancers, cardiovascular and renal diseases. The present study examined whether feeding of fish oil (FO)/flaxseed oil (FXO) has protective effect against SNT-induced toxicity. SNT significantly altered the activities of serum creatinine (Crt), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), metabolic and brush border membrane (BBM) enzymes. SNT caused significant imbalances in the antioxidant system associated with increased lipid peroxidation (LPO). Feeding of FO and FXO with SNT ameliorated the changes in various parameters caused by SNT. Nephrotoxicity parameters lowered and enzyme activities of carbohydrate metabolism, BBM and radioactively labeled inorganic phosphate (32Pi) transport were improved to near control values. The results of the present study suggest that ω-3 PUFA-enriched FO and FXO from sea-foods and plant sources respectively are similarly effective in reducing SNT-induced nephrotoxicity and oxidative damage.  相似文献

Algorithms that have been used on a routine basis for remote sensing of the phytoplankton pigment, chlorophyll- a, from ocean colour data from satellite sensors such as the CZCS (Coastal Zone Color Scanner), SeaWiFS (Sea Viewing Wide Field-of-View Sensor) and OCTS (Ocean Colour and Temperature Scanner) are all of an empirical nature. However, there exist theoretical models that allow ocean colour to be expressed as a function of the inherent optical properties of seawater, such as the absorption coefficient and the backscattering coefficient. These properties can in turn be expressed as functions of chlorophyll- a, at least for the so-called Case 1 waters in which phytoplankton may be considered to be the single, independent variable responsible for most of the variations in the marine optical properties. Here, we use such a theoretical approach to model variations in ocean colour as a function of chlorophyll- a concentration, and compare the results with some empirical models in routine use. The parameters of phytoplankton absorption necessary for the implementation of the ocean colour model are derived from our database of over 700 observations of phytoplankton absorption spectra and concurrent measurements of phytoplankton pigments by HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) techniques. Since there are reports in the literature that significant differences exist in the performance of the algorithms in polar regions compared with lower latitudes, the model is first implemented using observations made at latitudes less than 50. It is then applied to the Labrador Sea, a high-latitude environment. Our results show that there are indeed differences in the performance of the algorithm at high latitudes, and that these differences may be attributed to changes in the optical characteristics of phytoplankton that accompany changes in the taxonomic composition of their assemblages. The sensitivities of the model to assumptions made regarding absorption by coloured dissolved organic matter (or yellow substances) and backscattering by particles are examined. The importance of Raman scattering on ocean colour and its influence on the algorithms are also investigated.  相似文献

The principal goal in early missions of satellite-borne visible spectral radiometry (ocean colour) was to create synoptic fields of phytoplankton biomass indexed as concentration of chlorophyll-a. In the context of climate change, a major application of the results has been in the modelling of primary production and the ocean carbon cycle. It is now recognised that a partition of the marine autotrophic pool into a suite of phytoplankton functional types, each type having a characteristic role in the biogeochemical cycle of the ocean, would increase our understanding of the role of phytoplankton in the global carbon cycle. At the same time, new methods have been emerging that use visible spectral radiometry to map some of the phytoplankton functional types. Here, we assess the state of the art, and suggest paths for future work.  相似文献

Polycrystalline Bi1 ? xSbx (x = 0.10, 0.12 and 0.15) semiconducting alloys were synthesized by mechanical alloying in order to achieve homogeneous thermoelectric materials with improved mechanical strength. The homogeneity of the powder samples were repeatedly checked by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy to standardize the milling conditions. The best possible homogenized material was developed with the milling conditions of BPR 30:1, ball diameter 30 mm, 400 rpm and milling time of 15 h. The electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power and thermal conductivity were measured in the temperature range 300–500 K. It was found through these experiments that the composition with x = 0.12 behaved in a normal semiconducting way, whereas the other two compositions (x = 0.10 and 0.15) showed degenerate semiconductor behaviour. These features have been qualitatively explained from the band structure and interband scattering mechanisms.  相似文献

A review on the estimation of sea surface temperature (SST) from space using infrared radiometry is presented. The principle of the remote sensing technique, the infrared radiometers and the theory of SST measurement have been explained briefly. The absorption of infrared radiation from earth by the atmospheric constituents has been a major problem in the retrieval of SST from space-borne sensors. The effect of clouds and other atmospheric constituents, especially moisture content/water vapour, has been discussed and the various techniques used for evaluating the atmospheric correction and their limitations are summarised. Development of separate algorithms for each oceanic area coupled with validation by realistic sea truth measurements has been suggested for improving the accuracy of SST measurements from space. Resistivity and thermoelectric power studies have been carried out on two semiconductor alloy systems viz Pb0·8Sn0·2Te and Pb0·6Sn0·4Te up to 35 kbar pressure. Thermoelectric power and resistivity data on Pb0·8Sn0·2Te indicate that the energy gapE g=E L 6E L 6 + decreases with pressure resulting in a zero gap state near 35 kbar pressure. TEP studies on the alloy system Pb0·6Sn0·4Te provide direct evidence for a pressure induced L 6 →L 6 + cross over transition.  相似文献

The absorption coefficient of a substance distributed as discrete particles in suspension is less than that of the same material dissolved uniformly in a medium—a phenomenon commonly referred to as the flattening effect. The decrease in the absorption coefficient owing to flattening effect depends on the concentration of the absorbing pigment inside the particle, the specific absorption coefficient of the pigment within the particle, and on the diameter of the particle, if the particles are assumed to be spherical. For phytoplankton cells in the ocean, with diameters ranging from less than 1 µm to more than 100 µm, the flattening effect is variable, and sometimes pronounced, as has been well documented in the literature. Here, we demonstrate how the in vivo absorption coefficient of phytoplankton cells per unit concentration of its major pigment, chlorophyll a, can be used to determine the average cell size of the phytoplankton population. Sensitivity analyses are carried out to evaluate the errors in the estimated diameter owing to potential errors in the model assumptions. Cell sizes computed for field samples using the model are compared qualitatively with indirect estimates of size classes derived from high performance liquid chromatography data. Also, the results are compared quantitatively against measurements of cell size in laboratory cultures. The method developed is easy-to-apply as an operational tool for in situ observations, and has the potential for application to remote sensing of ocean colour data.  相似文献
