Abstract. In this paper we refer to the Temporal Precedence Problem on Pure Pointer Machines . This problem asks for the design of a data structure, maintaining a set of stored elements and supporting the following two operations: insert and precedes . The operation insert (a) introduces a new element a in the structure, while the operation precedes (a,b) returns true iff element a was inserted before element b temporally. In [11] a solution was provided to the problem with worst-case time complexity O (log log n ) per operation and O(n log log n) space, where n is the number of elements inserted. It was also demonstrated that the precedes operation has a lower bound of Ω (log log n ) for the Pure Pointer Machine model of computation. In this paper we present two simple solutions with linear space and worst-case constant insertion time. In addition, we describe two algorithms that can handle the precedes (a,b) operation in O (log log d ) time, where d is the temporal distance between the elements a and b .  相似文献

Service Oriented Computing and its most famous implementation technology Web Services (WS) are becoming an important enabler of networked business models. Discovery mechanisms are a critical factor to the overall utility of Web Services. So far, discovery mechanisms based on the UDDI standard rely on many centralized and area-specific directories, which poses information stress problems such as performance bottlenecks and fault tolerance. In this context, decentralized approaches based on Peer to Peer overlay networks have been proposed by many researchers as a solution. In this paper, we propose a new structured P2P overlay network infrastructure designed for Web Services Discovery. We present theoretical analysis backed up by experimental results, showing that the proposed solution outperforms popular decentralized infrastructures for web discovery, Chord (and some of its successors), BATON (and it’s successor) and Skip-Graphs.  相似文献

Particle surface area has recently been considered as a possible metric in an attempt to correlate particle characteristics with health effects. In order to provide input to such studies, two Nanoparticle Surface Area Monitors (NSAMs, TSI, Inc.) were deployed in different urban sites within Los Angeles to measure the concentration levels and the diurnal profiles of the surface area of ambient particles. The NSAM's principle of operation is based on the unipolar diffusion charging of particles. Results show that the particle surface concentration decreases from ~150 μ m2 cm?3 next to a freeway to ~ 100 μ m2 cm?3 at 100 m downwind of the freeway, and levels decline to 50–70 μ m2 cm?3 at urban background sites. Up to 51% and 30% of the total surface area corresponded to particles < 40 nm next to the freeway and at an urban background site, respectively. The NSAM signal was well correlated with a reconstructed surface concentration based on the particle number size distribution measured with collocated Scanning Mobility Particle Sizers (SMPSs, TSI, Inc.). In addition, the mean surface diameter calculated by combination of the NSAM and the total particle number concentration measured by a Condensation Particle Counter (CPC, TSI, Inc.) was in reasonable agreement with the arithmetic mean SMPS diameter, especially at the urban site. This study corroborates earlier findings on the application of diffusion chargers for ambient particle monitoring by demonstrating that they can be effectively used to monitor the particle surface concentration, or combined with a CPC to derive the mean surface diameter with high temporal resolution.  相似文献

Particle size distribution measurements of twelve USEPA priority pollutant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)—collected in Riverside, California, down to 10 nm aerodynamic diameter (Dp)—observed on integrated nocturnal samples (7:00 p.m.-6:30 a.m.) revealed that between 46 and 100% of the mass of particles in the Aitken size range was found in the 10–18 nm size bin. Particles in this size range have high alveolar deposition efficiency.  相似文献

Background

Nanometer silicon dioxide (nano-SiO2) has a wide variety of applications in material sciences, engineering and medicine; however, the potential cell biological and proteomic effects of nano-SiO2 exposure and the toxic mechanisms remain far from clear.

Results

Here, we evaluated the effects of amorphous nano-SiO2 (15-nm, 30-nm SiO2). on cellular viability, cell cycle, apoptosis and protein expression in HaCaT cells by using biochemical and morphological analysis, two-dimensional differential gel electrophoresis (2D-DIGE) as well as mass spectrometry (MS). We found that the cellular viability of HaCaT cells was significantly decreased in a dose-dependent manner after the treatment of nano-SiO2 and micro-sized SiO2 particles. The IC50 value (50% concentration of inhibition) was associated with the size of SiO2 particles. Exposure to nano-SiO2 and micro-sized SiO2 particles also induced apoptosis in HaCaT cells in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, the smaller SiO2 particle size was, the higher apoptotic rate the cells underwent. The proteomic analysis revealed that 16 differentially expressed proteins were induced by SiO2 exposure, and that the expression levels of the differentially expressed proteins were associated with the particle size. The 16 proteins were identified by MALDI-TOF-TOF-MS analysis and could be classified into 5 categories according to their functions. They include oxidative stress-associated proteins; cytoskeleton-associated proteins; molecular chaperones; energy metabolism-associated proteins; apoptosis and tumor-associated proteins.

Conclusions

These results showed that nano-SiO2 exposure exerted toxic effects and altered protein expression in HaCaT cells. The data indicated the alterations of the proteins, such as the proteins associated with oxidative stress and apoptosis, could be involved in the toxic mechanisms of nano-SiO2 exposure.  相似文献

In this study, we compare the chemical and oxidative characteristics of concentration-enriched PM2.5 samples simultaneously collected by a filter, a Nano-Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposition Impactor, and a BioSampler. Gravimetric measurements showed considerable agreement in particulate matter (PM) collection efficiency for all three samplers. Accordingly, samples from the three collectors exhibited similar chemical compositions. The mass fractions of their inorganic ions, labile and nonlabile, were comparable. Moreover, the organic carbon (OC) content of the BioSampler slurry was similar to that of the filter, while water-soluble OC levels of the filter and impactor samples were close to a 100% agreement. Lastly, linear regression analyses demonstrated that the water-soluble elements existed in similar proportions for the filter and impactor samples. Their respective total components were also in very good agreement. By contrast, the recoverable elements from the BioSampler slurry, determined by high-resolution magnetic sector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, were in good agreement with the water-soluble elements of the filter and impactor samples but not their corresponding total components. In spite of the overall agreement among the samples on their chemical composition, findings from a macrophage reactive oxygen species (ROS), a dithiothreitol (DTT), and a dihydroxybenzoate (DHBA) assay revealed that the oxidative potential of aqueous extracts of the filter and impactor substrates was similar yet substantially lower than that of the BioSampler slurry. However, filtering of the BioSampler slurry, i.e., removal of insoluble PM components, attenuated its ROS activity to about the same level as that of the water extracts of the filter and impactor samples. These findings first indicate that insoluble PM species are potentially redox active, and second that particle collection by the BioSampler, which circumvents the need for PM extraction, constitutes a viable alternative for collecting concentrated particles for characterization of the oxidative properties of PM.  相似文献

This study describes a field comparison conducted between 2 methods employing different MOUDI impactor configurations to evaluate their performance in sampling and measurement of the size distribution of 15 priority pollutant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Samples were collected during 24 h periods approximately every 7th day, beginning at 8:00 AM, in 2 different sites of the Los Angeles Basin. One site was near Central Los Angeles in an area impacted by high vehicular traffic, whereas the other site was located about 60 km downwind of central Los Angeles (receptor site). Particle samples from about 43 m 3 of air were collected using collocated MOUDI impactors and classified in 3 aerodynamic diameter size intervals: 0-0.18 w m (ultrafine mode I), 0.18-2.5 w m (accumulation mode II), and 2.5-10 w m (coarse mode III). One MOUDI operated in the conventional mode, the other with a vapor trapping system that included an XAD-4 coated annular denuder placed upstream of the impactor and a polyurethane foam plug (PUF) placed in series behind the impactor. PAHs were separated and quantified by HPLC with fluorescence detection optimized for the highest sensitivity. The results showed that for both sites, using either sampling system, the size distributions obtained are similar for the less volatile PAHs (log [ p ° L ] h m 3.2), but different for the more volatile PAHs (log [ p ° L ] S m 2.06). In the central Los Angeles site, the largest PAH fraction was found in the 0-0.18 w m (mode I) size range, typical of primary emissions. At the downwind location, the largest fraction was in the 0.18-2.5 w m (mode II) size range, consistent with an "aged" aerosol. At both sites, albeit not statistically significant, the mean regular to denuded MOUDI mass ratios were 33-36% and 11-19% higher, respectively, for the more volatile and the less volatile PAH groups. Sampling with the regular MOUDI configuration is simpler and thus recommended for measurement of the size distribution of PAHs in either group.  相似文献

Abstract

Volatility properties of ultrafine particles were analyzed next to State Route 110 (Pasadena freeway CA), a light-duty vehicle freeway where heavy-duty traffic is prohibited. In addition, mass concentration and chemical composition of particulate matter (PM) were measured in coarse, accumulation, and ultrafine modes. On weekdays from 17 May to 4 June 2004, measurements were performed in two locations, one very close to the freeway (within 2.5 m from the curb) and one at a distance of about 50 m from the freeway. For measurement of mass and chemical composition, the study employed in each location a micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) and a modified high-volume sampler. Both instruments sampled with the same size cutpoints: a coarse mode from 2.5 to 10 μm, an accumulation mode from 0.18 to 2.5 μm, and an ultrafine mode of particles less than 0.18 μm in aerodynamic diameter. Alternately, a tandem differential mobility analyzer (TDMA) was used at the two sites. A heater between the two DMAs evaporated volatile material from the monodisperse aerosol, size selected by the first DMA. The second DMA analyzed the losses of volatile components. The ultrafine number concentrations next to the freeway were 46,000 cm?3 on average during the sampling period. The MOUDI ultrafine mass concentration, nitrate, and EC were higher next to the freeway than at the background site farther from the freeway. The other components analyzed in the ultrafine mode had similar concentrations next to the freeway and at the background site. Volatility ranged from about 65% volume losses of 120 nm particles heated to 110°C to 95% of 20 nm particles. The 20 nm aerosol was only internally mixed, whereas increasing nonvolatile fractions were found for 40 nm (6% next to the freeway), 80 nm (20%), and 120 nm (28%) aerosols.  相似文献

Recent evidence links elevated ultrafine particle (UFP) concentrations with adverse health effects, but exposure assessments based upon PM 2.5 mass concentrations may be misleading. In order to better understand and quantify intra-community variability in UFP concentrations, a dense network of 14 monitoring sites was set-up in Los Angeles in two clusters—San Pedro/Wilmington and West Long Beach—in communities surrounding the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The network measured total particle number concentrations greater than 7 nm in diameter. In this range, UFP comprise approximately 90% of the total. Port-related activities—particularly goods movement associated with high volumes of heavy-duty diesel vehicle (HDDV) traffic—represent significant UFP sources. The field study was conducted from mid-February through mid-December 2007 to assess diurnal, seasonal, and spatial patterns and intra-community variability in total particle number concentrations. For sites within a few km of each other, simultaneous particle number concentrations can vary up to a factor of 10 (< 10,000 cm?3 up to 90,000 cm?3 for hourly averages calculated by month). The median hourly correlation coefficient (r) across all sites was modest and varied from 0.3 to 0.56. Specific site locations, particularly proximity to roadways used for goods movement, strongly affect observations. Clear diurnal and seasonal patterns are evident in the data. A diurnal pattern associated with high HDDV volumes and goods movement was identified. Coefficients of Divergence calculated for the site pairs suggest moderate heterogeneity overall (median study COD ≈ 0.35). The intra-urban variability observed in this study is comparable to and exceeds the inter-urban variability observed in a previous study in Los Angeles. UFP concentrations can vary considerably on short spatial scales in source-rich environments strongly influencing the accuracy of exposure assessments.  相似文献
