A laboratory investigation was conducted to evaluate the fatigue behavior of an alternative pavement foundation material containing cement stabilized reclaimed crushed aggregate. Class C fly ash, and waste-plastic strip [high density polyethylene (HDPE)] reinforcement. The primary motivation for this research was to evaluate a composite that contained more than 90% recycled materials for use as an alternative foundation layer underneath conventional flexible or rigid pavement. The specific objectives of this study were (1) to evaluate the flexural fatigue behavior of the new composite, and (2) to evaluate the accumulation of fatigue damage in the material. The results indicate that the fatigue resistance of this material is similar to other traditional stabilized pavement materials. It was found that the dynamic elastic modulus remained approximately constant (degraded slowly) for most specimens up to the end of fatigue life. Fatigue damage computed using a dissipated energy approach showed that the damage accumulation in this material approximately follows Miner's rule for cumulative damage, which is often used in pavement engineering.  相似文献

The chlorophyll (Chl) concentration in the seawater of the Bay of Bengal (BoB) and the Arabian Sea (AS) changes most during the Indian Ocean dipole (IOD) mode event. The empirical orthogonal function (EOF) of several oceanographic and atmospheric data was studied, using 9 years (1998–2006) of reanalysed satellite data. The variation of Chl during the period of September to November (SON) over the 9 years has been studied in this article. It has been found that significant enhancement of Chl in the BoB takes place during IOD years owing to the surface wind action, that is, wind-stress curl (WC), which favours the upwelling process, whereas the AS shows a decline in concentration of Chl owing to a reduced open ocean upwelling process.  相似文献

A theoretical approach based on molecular dynamics modeling, for the estimation of the enhancement of the thermal conductivity of liquids by the introduction of suspended metallic nanoparticles is proposed. Algorithms are developed for simulating the nanofluid abiding the procedural steps of the molecular dynamics method. The method is presented as a solution to the generic problem of thermal conductivity enhancement of liquids in the presence of nanoparticles, and illustrated using a specific simulation procedure with properties representing water and platinum nanoparticles. The thermal conductivity enhancement estimated using the simulations are compared with existing experimental results and those predicted by conventional effective medium theories. Parametric studies are conducted to obtain the variation of thermal conductivity enhancement with the temperature and the volume fraction of the nanoparticles in the suspension.  相似文献

Two-dimensional, fully developed, convective heat transfer in compact passages is investigated numerically, incorporating the effects of the surface irregularities, to analyze the influence of these irregularities on fluid flow and heat transfer. This analysis helps to bring out the differences in the performance evaluation if regular cross sections are assumed in analyzing compact and mini channels. Forced convection in compact passages with an apparent rectangular shape is analyzed using a finite-difference method. The calculation is validated experimentally using Michelson interferometry. The numerical results for the channel, incorporating surface irregularities, are compared with those assuming a regular cross-sectional geometry. The results indicate that the coefficient of friction and the Nusselt number calculated for channels, considering the irregular cross section, are less than those predicted using an assumption of regular geometry. The results provide some insight into the reasons for the observed deviations in the comparisons. The observations are attributed to the influence of the surface irregularities on the relative dominance of the surface area to the cross-sectional area, which gets pronounced in compact passages. The findings suggest that some of the observed deviations in the performance of compact passages, compared to theoretical results, may be due to the use of regular geometries to define domain shapes while performing theoretical analysis.  相似文献

An experimental investigation was undertaken to evaluate the mechanical behavior of a soil–cement–fly ash composite, reinforced with recycled plastic strips (high-density polyethylene) that were obtained from postconsumer milk and water containers. The primary motivation for the study was to investigate the innovative reuse of several candidate waste materials in geotechnical and pavement applications. The specific objectives of the research were: (1) to evaluate the compressive, split tensile, and flexural strength characteristics of the material, and (2) to determine the effectiveness of recycled plastic strips in enhancing the toughness characteristics of the composite. Since cement-stabilized materials are weak in tension, the main focus of the experimental program was to conduct a series of specially instrumented split tensile and flexural tests on mixes containing various amounts of cement, fly ash, and plastic strips. For a meaningful comparison of test results, all specimens were prepared at a constant dry density. The standard ASTM C496 procedure for split tensile test was slightly modified by attaching two horizontal linear variable differential transformers (LVDTs) to measure the diametral deformation of the specimen due to compressive loading in an orthogonal direction. This modification enabled the evaluation of the postpeak toughness behavior of the composite. For some specimens, a strain gauge was attached to the middle of the face perpendicular to the loading plane in order to correlate the results with the one found using the LVDTs. All tests were performed with a 90 kN universal testing machine with deformation control. Experimental data show that the soil–cement matrix stabilized with 4% to 10% by weight of fly ash and reinforced with 0.25% to 0.5% (by weight) plastic strips (having lengths of 19 mm or 38 mm) can achieve a maximum compressive strength of 7000 kPa, a split tensile strength of 1000 kPa, and a flexural strength of 1200 kPa. These ranges in strength values are suitable for a high-quality stabilized base course for a highway pavement. To quantify the reinforcing effects in the postpeak region, a dimensionless toughness index is proposed. It is found that the use of fiber reinforcement significantly increases the postpeak load carrying capacity of the mix and thus the fracture energy. It is concluded that the lean cementitious mix containing recycled materials offer a lot of promise as an alternative material for civil engineering construction.  相似文献

The accidental release of hydrogen into enclosures can result in a flammable mixture with concentration gradients and possible deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT). This numerical study aims to investigate the effect of obstacle spacing and mixture concentration on the DDT in a homogeneous and inhomogeneous hydrogen-air mixture. The paper focuses on the mechanisms behind the DDT in two mixtures with an average hydrogen concentration of 15% and 30%. Unlike the near-stoichiometric mixture, in the lean mixture, DDT only occurs in the inhomogeneous mixture. Depending on obstacle spacing, three different regimes of DDT were observed in the near-stoichiometric inhomogeneous mixture: i) Detonation was ignited when a strong Mach stem formed and propagated between the obstacles; ii) two explosion centers appeared when incident shock and Mach stem reflected from upper and lower obstacles, respectively; iii) Mach stem did not form but DDT occurred behind the flame front at the top of the obstacle.  相似文献
