Abstract

A simple, non-destructive method is presented for the characterization of the birefringence properties of a helically wound mono-mode optical fibre. It is shown that the Jones matrix model developed by J.N. Ross can be applied to describe them, if the polarization evolution of light is measured with respect to a local reference frame (Serret-Frenet frame). In this case the Ross model is equal to the matrix model developed by R.C. Jones for a twisted crystal. In order to use a fixed reference frame (laboratory reference frame) it is necessary to consider the rotation of the reference frame at the fibre input face produced by the fibre topology. The orientation of the helical fibre axes at the input is defined following the geometrical criteria proposed by Ross. The use of Poincaré's method and Mueller calculus to rewrite the Ross model simplifies the physical interpretation of the results. The method presented provides an easy way to measure the total linear retardation induced by the fibre curvature, and to separate the circular retardation associated with the photo-elastic response of the fibre, from the topological rotation of the reference frame defined only by the geometry of the helically wound fibre.  相似文献

Social networking sites (SNSs) provide ambient awareness of the interests and activities of friends and relatives helping them sustain and strengthen their social ties. Older adults who are not adopting SNSs might however feel like outsiders within their own families who increasingly rely on these services to socialize. Previous research has shown that situated displays can provide appropriate interfaces for older adults to use digital services. In this paper we explore how situated displays can intuitively provide ambient awareness to strengthen the family social network of older adults. We designed and developed Tlatoque, a situated display, to seamlessly integrate older adults into the SNS used by their relatives. The results of a 21-week deployment study of an initial version of Tlatoque in one extended family showed that the older adult became more conscious of relatives’ activities, which also enriched in-person encounters. However, relatives expected the older adult to reply to their posts in the SNS and Tlatoque lacked mechanisms for the older adult to provide feedback. We re-designed Tlatoque to incorporate means for enabling the older adult to share information back to the SNS. We conducted a second 21-week deployment study with another extended family to evaluate the use of this new version of the system. Our results indicate that the second design was successful in providing ambient awareness to the older adult as well as to her relatives. We conclude that situated displays that provide SNS services can assist the integration of older adults to their social network and contribute to enhance asymmetric relations between the older adult and younger relatives.  相似文献

Teachers spend considerable amount of time keeping students with autism “on task” giving away prompts and rewards and maintaining a detailed record of students’ progress during the object discrimination training. We hypothesize that tangible computing, in particular smart objects, could help teachers cope with the problems faced during the object discrimination training of students with autism. In this paper, we describe design principles for smart objects to support the object discrimination training and present several example prototypes. First, we present the design and implementation of “Things that think” (T3), a smart device that converts traditional objects into smart objects that promote interactivity with a playful and engaging interaction, and are capable of the automatic recording of students’ progress. Then, we present four T3 smart objects assembled in a board. The results of a 7-week deployment study of the use of such smart objects in three classrooms of students with autism (n = 25, 7 teachers and 18 students with autism) demonstrate T3 smart objects reduce the workload of teachers, ease the record-keeping and increase its reliability, and reduce students’ behavioral problems while improving their cognitive efficacy. Ene-reductases from the Old Yellow Enzyme (OYE) superfamily are a well-known and efficient biocatalytic alternative for the asymmetric reduction of C=C bonds. Considering the broad variety of substituents that can be tolerated, and the excellent stereoselectivities achieved, it is apparent why these enzymes are so appealing for preparative and industrial applications. Different classes of C=C bonds activated by at least one electron-withdrawing group have been shown to be accepted by these versatile biocatalysts in the last decades, affording a vast range of chiral intermediates employed in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, flavours, fragrances and fine chemicals. In order to access both enantiomers of reduced products, stereodivergent pairs of OYEs are desirable, but their natural occurrence is limited. The detailed knowledge of the stereochemical course of the reaction can uncover alternative strategies to orient the selectivity via mutagenesis, evolution, and substrate engineering. An overview of the ongoing studies on OYE-mediated bioreductions will be provided, with particular focus on stereochemical investigations by deuterium labelling.  相似文献

In vitro effects of graded concentrations of diheptyldiselenide (DDS) on human tumor cell proliferation, and on the proliferative responses and immunological functions of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (MNC) were investigated. The agent significantly decreased tumor cell proliferation in a dose and time dependent manner. Proliferative responses of MNC to phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and interleukin-2 (IL-2) were also significantly depressed when MNCs were exposed to DDS (250 microM for 18 h) led to a significant increase in NK activity only in MNC samples showing very limited baseline NK function. On the other hand, generation of LAK cells was significantly inhibited by DDS. However, when the agent was added to the effector and target cell mixture during the 4 h 51Cr release cytotoxicity assay, no influence was found on NK and LAK-mediated target cell lysis. These studies show that high concentrations of DDS inhibit tumor cell proliferation and could also impair certain proliferative-dependent immune functions, without directly affecting cell-mediated cytolytic activity of effector cells.  相似文献
