The needs that an energy supply system must meet are constantly changing, due to technological, social and political reasons. Effective energy planning is a dynamic process that is repeated periodically and adjusts to changing conditions. Energy decision makers and planners are no longer able to rely on inductive decision making since they have to investigate the effect of various decision parameters and possible future changes. To help in this process, models have been developed where estimates of future load growth, candidate power plants, fuels and other key factors can be introduced, from which the planners can evaluate decision parameters and the available alternatives. The paper presents the different methodologies and practices that are used by 11 energy models for energy demand forecasting, supply side management and generation expansion planning, demand side management and integrated resource planning. The paper concludes to the presentation of a strategic appraisal of the examined energy models appropriate for energy planning in Mozambique. This paper examines the evolution of the World Wide Web as a network of networks and discusses the emergence of Web Science as an interdisciplinary area that can provide us with insights on how the Web developed, and how it has affected and is affected by society. Through its different stages of evolution, the Web has gradually changed from a technological network of documents to a network where documents, data, people and organisations are interlinked in various and often unexpected ways. It has developed from a technological artefact separate from people to an integral part of human activity that is having an increasingly significant impact on the world. This paper outlines the lessons from this retrospective examination of the evolution of the Web, presents the main outcomes of Web Science activities and discusses directions along which future developments could be anticipated.  相似文献

Fiber-optic probes are widely used in optical spectroscopy of biological tissues and other turbid media. Only limited information exists, however, on the ways in which the illumination-collection geometry and the overall probe design influence the interrogation of media. We have investigated both experimentally and computationally the effect of probe-to-target distance (PTD) on the diffuse reflectance collected from an isotropically (Lambertian) scattering target and an agar-based tissue phantom. Studies were conducted with three probes characterized by either common (single-fiber) or separate (two bifurcated multifiber probes) illumination and collection channels. This study demonstrates that PTD, probe design, and tissue scattering anisotropy influence the extent of the transport of light into the medium, the light-collection efficiency, and the sampling volume of collected light. The findings can be applied toward optimization of fiber-optic probe designs for quantitative optical spectroscopy of turbid media including biological tissues.  相似文献

Robust Sliding-mode Control of Nine-link Biped Robot Walking   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
A nine-link planar biped robot model is considered which, in addition tothe main links (i.e., legs, thighs and trunk), includes a two-segment foot.First, a continuous walking pattern of the biped on a flat terrain issynthesized, and the corresponding desired trajectories of the robot jointsare calculated. Next, the kinematic and dynamic equations that describe itslocomotion during the various walking phases are briefly presented. Finally,a nonlinear robust control approach is followed, motivated by the fact thatthe control which has to guarantee the stability of the biped robot musttake into account its exact nonlinear dynamics. However, an accurate modelof the biped robot is not available in practice, due to the existence ofuncertainties of various kinds such as unmodeled dynamics and parameterinaccuracies. Therefore, under the assumption that the estimation error onthe unknown (probably time-varying) parameters is bounded by a givenfunction, a sliding-mode controller is applied, which provides a successfulway to preserve stability and achieve good performance, despite the presenceof strong modeling imprecisions or uncertainties. The paper includes a setof representative simulation results that demonstrate the very good behaviorof the sliding-mode robust biped controller.  相似文献

In this paper we present our research results towards the detection of violent scenes in movies, employing advanced fusion methodologies, based on learning, knowledge representation and reasoning. Towards this goal, a multi-step approach is followed: initially, automated audio and visual analysis is performed to extract audio and visual cues. Then, two different fusion approaches are deployed: (i) a multimodal one that provides binary decisions on the existence of violence or not, employing machine learning techniques, (ii) an ontological and reasoning one, that combines the audio-visual cues with violence and multimedia ontologies. The latter reasons out not only the existence of violence or not in a video scene, but also the type of violence (fight, screams, gunshots). Both approaches are experimentally tested, validated and compared for the binary decision problem of violence detection. Finally, results for the violence type identification are presented for the ontological fusion approach. For evaluation purposes, a large dataset of real movie data has been populated.  相似文献

The Web has spurred our imagination as to how education could be radically transformed and enhanced through the adoption of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). While there have been many significant innovations and successes over the last decade there have also been many unrealised aims. Beliefs in technology-driven change for education have been countered by shortcomings in technological understanding by educationalists and in turn by shortcomings in the understanding of educational theories and learning concepts by technologists. The use of the Web in education has revealed issues such as the distinction between formal and informal learning; the packaging and formatting of learning materials for online distribution and use; the management of learning materials and processes in virtual and managed learning environments; solutions offered by the semantic Web; and how the quality of experience in interactive learning environments relates to the quality of the Internet infrastructure. A comparison between the performance of early and current Web technologies from a user perspective is given for an interactive learning environment which has been in use for over a decade. Client, server, network and protocol components which contribute to the quality of experience for the end user are presented and analysed. In summary, this paper examines the use of the Web in education to date and looks forward to new challenges and aspirations such as MOOCs (massively online open coursewares) and the immersive 3D Web as the basis for the next generation of learning environments.  相似文献

This paper, the first from a series of three papers on the application of coded excitation signals in medical ultrasound, discusses the basic principles and ultrasound-related problems of pulse compression. The concepts of signal modulation and matched filtering are given, and a simple model of attenuation relates the matched filter response with the ambiguity function, known from radar. Based on this analysis and the properties of the ambiguity function, the selection of coded waveforms suitable for ultrasound imaging is discussed. It is shown that linear frequency modulation (FM) signals have the best and most robust features for ultrasound imaging. Other coded signals such as nonlinear FM and binary complementary Golay codes also have been considered and characterized in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and sensitivity to frequency shifts. Using the simulation program Field II, it is found that in the case of linear FM signals, a SNR improvement of 12 to 18 dB can be expected for large imaging depths in attenuating media, without any depth-dependent filter compensation. In contrast, nonlinear FM modulation and binary codes are shown to give a SNR improvement of only 4 to 9 dB when processed with a matched filter. Other issues, such as depth-dependent matched filtering and use of filters other than the matched filter (inverse and Wiener filters) also are addressed.  相似文献

In the first paper, the superiority of linear FM signals was shown in terms of signal-to-noise ratio and robustness to tissue attenuation. This second paper in the series of three papers on the application of coded excitation signals in medical ultrasound presents design methods of linear FM signals and mismatched filters, in order to meet the higher demands on resolution in ultrasound imaging. It is shown that for the small time-bandwidth (TB) products available in ultrasound, the rectangular spectrum approximation is not valid, which reduces the effectiveness of weighting. Additionally, the distant range sidelobes are associated with the ripples of the spectrum amplitude and, thus, cannot be removed by weighting. Ripple reduction is achieved through amplitude or phase predistortion of the transmitted signals. Mismatched filters are designed to efficiently use the available bandwidth and at the same time to be insensitive to the transducer's impulse response. With these techniques, temporal sidelobes are kept below 60 to 100 dB, image contrast is improved by reducing the energy within the sidelobe region, and axial resolution is preserved. The method is evaluated first for resolution performance and axial sidelobes through simulations with the program Field II. A coded excitation ultrasound imaging system based on a commercial scanner and a 4 MHz probe driven by coded sequences is presented and used for the clinical evaluation of the coded excitation/compression scheme. The clinical images show a significant improvement in penetration depth and contrast, while they preserve both axial and lateral resolution. At the maximum acquisition depth of 15 cm, there is an improvement of more than 10 dB in the signal-to-noise ratio of the images. The paper also presents acquired images, using complementary Golay codes, that show the deleterious effects of attenuation on binary codes when processed with a matched filter, also confirmed by presented simulated images.  相似文献

Magnetic properties of nanomagnetic and biomagnetic systems are investigated using cantilever magnetometry. In the presence of a magnetic field, magnetic films or particles deposited at the free end of a cantilever give rise to a torque on the mechanical sensor, which leads to frequency shifts depending on the applied magnetic field. From the frequency response, the magnetic properties of a magnetic sample are obtained. The magnetic field dependences of paramagnetic and ferromagnetic thin films and particles are measured in a temperature range of 5-320 K at a pressure below 10(-6) mbar. We present magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic materials Fe, Co and Ni at room temperature and also for the rare earth elements Gd, Dy and Tb at various temperatures. In addition, the magnetic moments of magnetotactic bacteria are measured under vacuum conditions at room temperature. Cantilever magnetometry is a highly sensitive tool for characterizing systems with small magnetic moments. By reducing the cantilever dimensions the sensitivity can be increased by an order of magnitude.  相似文献
